Agent Cities [4] is an ambitious project whose main aim is the construction of a worldwide, publicly accessible network of agent-based FIPA platforms!. In March 2003 there are around 50 active platforms. Each of them supports agents that offer services similar to those that can be found in a real city (facilities, amenities, attractions, information and commercial services). It is expected that, in the near future, it will be possible to implement intelligent complex compound services (e.g. agents that are able to help a user to plan a weekend away, including tasks such as booking air tickets, selecting and booking a room in an appropriate hotel, buying tickets for the theatre and reserving a table in a restaurant that is near the theatre and offers the user's favourite meal). The main aim of our work was to develop a set of agents that could offer to the citizens and visitors of a city not the usual leisure-oriented services but health-care related services. This interest is related with previous work that our research group had done in the last years in the application of AI techniques (especially agent-based technology) to the medical domain (see e.g. [6]). Therefore, we decided to design and implement a multi-agent system with the following features: • The user may request information about all the medical centres available in a particular geographical area.

Multi-agent systems are one of the most exciting research areas in Artificial Intelligence. This book reports on the results achieved in this area, discusses the benefits (and drawbacks) that agent-based systems may bring to medical domains and society, and also provides a list of the research topics that should be tackled in the near future to make the deployment of health-care agent-based systems a reality. Current topics of research include communication and co-operation between distributed intelligent agents to manage patient care.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Healthcare is more than a comprehensive introduction to artificial intelligence as a tool in the generation and analysis of healthcare data. The book is split into two sections where the first section describes the current healthcare challenges and the rise of AI in this arena. The ten following chapters are written by specialists in each area, covering the whole healthcare ecosystem. First, the AI applications in drug design and drug development are presented followed by its applications in the field of cancer diagnostics, treatment and medical imaging. Subsequently, the application of AI in medical devices and surgery are covered as well as remote patient monitoring. Finally, the book dives into the topics of security, privacy, information sharing, health insurances and legal aspects of AI in healthcare. - Highlights different data techniques in healthcare data analysis, including machine learning and data mining - Illustrates different applications and challenges across the design, implementation and management of intelligent systems and healthcare data networks - Includes applications and case studies across all areas of AI in healthcare data

2.1 E-Government: e-Governance and e-Democracy The term Electronic Government (e-Government), as an expression, was coined after the example of Electronic Commerce. In spite of being a relatively recent expression, e-Government designates a field of activity that has been with us for several decades and which has attained a high level of penetration in many countries2. What has been observed over the recent years is a shift on the broadness of the e-Government concept. The ideas inside e-Governance and e- Democracy are to some extent promising big changes in public administration. The demand now is not only simply delivering a service - line. It is to deliver complex and new services, which are all citizen-centric. Another important demand is related to the improvement of citizen's participation in governmental processes and decisions so that the governments' transparency and legitimacy are enforced. In order to fulfill these new demands, a lot of research has been done over the recent years (see Section 3) but many challenges are still to be faced, not only in the technological field, but also in the political and social aspects.

Experts are constantly trying to understand the complex relationships between humans and evolving technologies. Cognitive ergonomics, the science behind human-machine interactions, ensures optimal performance and decision-making. Understanding and managing these interactions, especially in medicine and computer tasks, requires an interdisciplinary approach. Bioethics of Cognitive Ergonomics and Digital Transition addresses these challenges head-on, offering a comprehensive exploration of cognitive ergonomics and its implications for technology, society, and more. One of the critical issues addressed in this book is the ethical design and implementation of human-machine interactions, particularly in biomedical research and treatment contexts. As technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and biotechnology continue to advance, the need for ethical frameworks becomes increasingly critical. This book examines the bioethical perspectives of these interactions, providing readers with insights into how to navigate these complex issues responsibly.

Multi-agent Systems (MAS) are one of the most exciting research areas in Artificial Intelligence meanwhile Environmental Studies is a research area of strategic interest. Both areas can provide society with solutions for many real applications, in order to use and protect the environment. Human activities imply intervention into nature, but properly managed, these interventions can not be only ecologically sound but also favourable to the sustainable development of civilisation. The encounter between these fields is a new challenge for many researchers of both communities. This book presents a comprehensive reference of state-of-the-art efforts. Specifically, it presents current and future ways in which adaptive information technologies, techniques, protocols and architectures, such as software agent technologies and multi-agent systems, can be used to support the development of real-world agent-based systems in the area of e-Environment.
