Applied Geographers have the knowledge, tools and skills to help resolve these conflicts and play an essential part within a multi-cultural world in which understanding, tolerance and sensitivity are fundamental to social and economic well-being and to the good management of our natural environment. Geography was always applied, long before it became an identified academic discipline; much geographical knowledge was created for specific purposes. Since the discipline was established, individuals have used their knowledge in a wide range of contexts and for various types of clients. For the first half of the 20th century, the development of geography as an academic discipline was closely associated with its educational role, especially in the preparation of teachers and of teaching materials. Increasingly, however, geographers responded to societal changes—especially the extending role of the state—by promoting their discipline as a potential contributor in a range of activities. Some, like L. Dudley Stamp, argued that geographers’ factual knowledge regarding environments and places plus their understanding of spatial organization principles should be applied in town, city, country, and regional planning. This could just involve information provision, but increasingly it was argued that geographical analyses could inform the understanding of current patterns and trends and the preparation of plans for the future. Such geographical involvement expanded in the late 20th century as pressures grew on universities to orient their work more to societal needs and to undertake applied research for public- and private-sector sponsors. A useful book for those who are interested in the study of this subject. It may equally be liked by the general readers interested in studying the topic as also the academics, public administrators and practitioners. Contents: • Population Geography • Economic Geography • Political Geography • Regional Planning • Geography of India

This volume presents the proceedings of the 2nd International Conference of Geography and Geoinformatics for Sustainable Development (ICGGS), held in Phuket, Thailand, April 7-8, 2022. The collection focuses on the importance of spatial thinking and planning by applying geography concepts and geospatial technology innovations in solving global problems such as environmental degradation, urban pollution, and climate change. The proceedings consist of case studies on wide-ranging spatial issues in developing countries, addressing challenges in mainstreaming sustainable development paradigms into their economies to improve natural resource and environmental management. One of the main goals of the volume is to share and exchange different points of view regarding global, regional, and local spatial issues and how to use geography and geoinformatics for building resilience in multiple sectors, e.g., water, ecosystems, agriculture, and health. It offers the opportunity to learn about how geospatial concepts and technologies can contribute to environmental sustainability, while advancing education and research related to geography and geoinformatics. It will be a useful resource for students and researchers to initiate research ideas related to geospatial topics in regional and local scales.

The Financial Geography of Community Development provides an uncommon perspective on managing community development and local governmental finance. It examines the role of public finance in the management of community development from a geographical point of view. This book describes how geography has influenced, and will continue to influence, the physical development our nation's communities and their fiscal capacities. It focuses on the dynamic and symbiotic relationships between a community's geographical character and its fiscal capacity that creates a community's physical form. The book offers a conceptual model for managing the process of community development, and applies this model to various planning issues and objectives. Among the insights suggested by this book are; - the "sprawl" in urban sprawl should be treated as more as a verb than a noun, - The Costs of Sprawl change with different phases of development, - the price of public facilities is disconnected to their costs, creating land use inefficiencies, -economies of density interact with economies of scale, - effective planning is a delicate balance between prescription and prediction, - public finance is a more powerful tool for shaping urban forms than zoning, - fiscal capacities and hence the capacity to manage community development varies widely between communities, - in community development there are no silver bullets and the answer to most issues is "it depends," - the burden of maintaining public facilities constrains our ability to afford new facilities, and - expecting developers to help finance public facilities is not new.
