Real-world engineering problems often require concurrent optimisation of several design objectives, which are conflicting in most of the cases. Such an optimisation is generally called multi-objective or multi-criterion optimisation. The area of research that applies evolutionary methodologies to multi-objective optimisation is of special and growing interest. It brings a solution to many yet-opened real-world problems and questions. Generally, multi-objective engineering problems have no single optimal design, but several solutions of equal efficiency allowing different trade-offs. The decision maker's preferences are normally used to select the most adequate design. Such preferences may be dictated before or after the optimisation takes place. They may also be introduced interactively at different levels of the optimisation process. Multi-objective optimisation methods can be subdivided into classical and evolutionary. The classical methods usually aim at a single solution while the evolutionary methods target a whole set of so-called Pareto-optimal solutions. of the evolutionary multi-objective optimisation research area and related new trends. Furthermore, it reports many innovative designs yielded by the application of such optimisation methods. The contents of the book are divided into two main parts: evolutionary multi-objective optimisation and evolutionary multi-objective designs.

The generalization of optimization theory and techniques to other formulations comprises a large area of applied mathematics. Optimization includes finding "best available" values of some objective function given a defined domain (or input), including a variety of different types of objective functions and different types of domains.Adding more than one objective to an optimization problem adds complexity. For example, to optimize a structural design, one would desire a design that is both light and rigid. When two objectives conflict, a trade-off must be created. There may be one lightest design, one stiffest design, and an infinite number of designs that are some compromise of weight and rigidity. The set of trade-off designs that cannot be improved upon according to one criterion without hurting another criterion is known as the Pareto set. The curve created plotting weight against stiffness of the best designs is known as the Pareto frontier.A design is judged to be "Pareto optimal" (equivalently, "Pareto efficient" or in the Pareto set) if it is not dominated by any other design: If it is worse than another design in some respects and no better in any respect, then it is dominated and is not Pareto optimal. The choice among "Pareto optimal" solutions to determine the "favorite solution" is delegated to the decision maker. In other words, defining the problem as multi-objective optimization signals that some information is missing: desirable objectives are given but combinations of them are not rated relative to each other. In some cases, the missing information can be derived by interactive sessions with the decision maker.Multi-objective optimization problems have been generalized further into vector optimization problems where the (partial) ordering is no longer given by the Pareto ordering.Optimization problems are often multi-modal; that is, they possess multiple good solutions. They could all be globally good or there could be a mix of globally good and locally good solutions. Obtaining all (or at least some of) the multiple solutions is the goal of a multi-modal optimizer.Classical optimization techniques due to their iterative approach do not perform satisfactorily when they are used to obtain multiple solutions, since it is not guaranteed that different solutions will be obtained even with different starting points in multiple runs of the algorithm. Evolutionary algorithms, however, are a very popular approach to obtain multiple solutions in a multi-modal optimization task. This book develops the following topics:* "Multiobjective Optimization Algorithms" * "Using fminimax with a Simulink Model" * "Signal Processing Using fgoalattain" * "Generate and Plot a Pareto Front" * "Linear Programming Algorithms" * "Maximize Long-Term Investments Using Linear Programming" * "Mixed-Integer Linear Programming Algorithms" * "Tuning Integer Linear Programming" * "Mixed-Integer Linear Programming Basics" * "Optimal Dispatch of Power Generators" * "Mixed-Integer Quadratic Programming Portfolio Optimization" * "Quadratic Programming Algorithms"* "Quadratic Minimization with Bound Constraints" * "Quadratic Minimization with Dense, Structured Hessian"* "Large Sparse Quadratic Program with Interior Point Algorithm" * "Least-Squares (Model Fitting) Algorithms" * "lsqnonlin with a Simulink Model" * "Nonlinear Least Squares With and Without Jacobian" * "Linear Least Squares with Bound Constraints" * "Optimization App with the lsqlin Solver" * "Maximize Long-Term Investments Using Linear Programming" * "Jacobian Multiply Function with Linear Least Squares" * "Nonlinear Curve Fitting with lsqcurvefit" * "Fit a Model to Complex-Valued Data" * "Systems of Equations" * "Nonlinear Equations with Analytic Jacobian" * "Nonlinear Equations with Jacobian" * "Nonlinear Equations with Jacobian Sparsity Pattern"* "Nonlinear Systems with Constraints" * "Parallel Computing for Optimization"

This book describes how evolutionary algorithms (EA), including genetic algorithms (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) can be utilized for solving multi-objective optimization problems in the area of embedded and VLSI system design. Many complex engineering optimization problems can be modelled as multi-objective formulations. This book provides an introduction to multi-objective optimization using meta-heuristic algorithms, GA and PSO and how they can be applied to problems like hardware/software partitioning in embedded systems, circuit partitioning in VLSI, design of operational amplifiers in analog VLSI, design space exploration in high-level synthesis, delay fault testing in VLSI testing and scheduling in heterogeneous distributed systems. It is shown how, in each case, the various aspects of the EA, namely its representation and operators like crossover, mutation, etc, can be separately formulated to solve these problems. This book is intended for design engineers and researchers in the field of VLSI and embedded system design. The book introduces the multi-objective GA and PSO in a simple and easily understandable way that will appeal to introductory readers.

The exercise of solving engineering problems that require optimisation procedures can be seriously affected by uncertain variables, resulting in potential underperforming solutions. Although this is a well-known problem, important knowledge gaps are still to be addressed. For example, concepts of robustness largely differ from study to study, robust solutions are generally provided with limited information about their uncertainty, and robust optimisation is difficult to apply as it is a computationally demanding task. The proposed research aims to address the mentioned challenges and focuses on robust optimisation of multiple objectives and multiple sources of probabilistically described uncertainty. This is done by the development of the Robust Optimisation and Probabilistic Analysis of Robustness algorithm (ROPAR), which integrates widely accepted robustness metrics into a single flexible framework. In this thesis, ROPAR is not only tested in benchmark functions, but also in engineering problems related to the water sector, in particular the design of urban drainage and water distribution systems. ROPAR allows for employing practically any existing multi-objective optimisation algorithm as its internal optimisation engine, which enables its applicability to other problems as well. Additionally, ROPAR can be straightforwardly parallelized, allowing for fast availability of results.

With respect to the importance of multi-objective optimization in the context of the today's information processing and analysis, as well as the limitation of current approaches to treat large and complex tasks in practical time and little adjustment costs, this work proposes a novel optimization concept, based on data domain transformations and subsequent cluster analyses to solve multi-objective optimization problems. The approach abstracts the transposition of large, high-dimensional and diverse data models to low-dimensional uniform equivalents within an independent framework, which is optimized regarding data similarity conservation, i.e. the semantic relations of the data items to each other are preserved, and low runtime complexity, i.e. linearly increasing model sizes also cause only linearly growing runtimes in spite of the consideration of all data relations. The cluster analysis step is represented by an enhanced version of the k-Means algorithm, which is designed to group large numbers of data items to large numbers of clusters with also linear time complexity. Applying and adapting these both components to generic segmentation and pattern recognition tasks as two representative multi-objective optimization problems, illustrate and prove the usability of the proposed concept, by solving these tasks with high qualities of results and low runtimes with virtually linear time complexities. The abstracted components, as well as their application extensions are tested and analyzed during full factorial design tests, utilizing artificial, scalable data models, to determine valid parameter ranges, qualities of results and runtimes, as well as to ensure repeatable and comparable tests."

This book is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students in applied mathematics or computer science, as a tool for solving real-world design problems. The present work covers fundamentals in multi-objective optimization and applications in mathematical and engineering system design using a new optimization strategy, namely the Self-Adaptive Multi-objective Optimization Differential Evolution (SA-MODE) algorithm. This strategy is proposed in order to reduce the number of evaluations of the objective function through dynamic update of canonical Differential Evolution parameters (population size, crossover probability and perturbation rate). The methodology is applied to solve mathematical functions considering test cases from the literature and various engineering systems design, such as cantilevered beam design, biochemical reactor, crystallization process, machine tool spindle design, rotary dryer design, among others.
