Aldo Belleni-Morante started to write this book in February 2008 giving two provisional titles: Semigroups and Evaluation Equations in Locally Convex Spaces: An Introduction or Applied Semigroups in Locally Convex Spaces and, he seemed on hurry for finishing it. He decided to share his scientific viewpoint with the Scottish colleagues Prof. Adam C. McBride (AMB) and Dr Wilson Lamb (WL) from the Strathclyde University. He fully desired this collaboration as a consequence of some previous scientific works undertaken since 2006 at the Strathclyde University along his appointment as Permanent Visiting Professor. He also considered the very early conception of this book since 2005 when he spent his latest sabbatical year in Glasgow and further in 2007 when Adam McBride came to Florence to work on this. But not much work was done at that time. To this end, Aldo started happily on his own research work to write the book and he completed his first part in 2008. Unfortunately, the first health problems arisen and this book stayed unfinished.

The aim of the series is to present new and important developments in pure and applied mathematics. Well established in the community over two decades, it offers a large library of mathematics including several important classics. The volumes supply thorough and detailed expositions of the methods and ideas essential to the topics in question. In addition, they convey their relationships to other parts of mathematics. The series is addressed to advanced readers wishing to thoroughly study the topic. Editorial Board Lev Birbrair, Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, Brasil Victor P. From the reviews: "Since E. Hille and K. Yoshida established the characterization of generators of C0 semigroups in the 1940s, semigroups of linear operators and its neighboring areas have developed into a beautiful abstract theory. Moreover, the fact that mathematically this abstract theory has many direct and important applications in partial differential equations enhances its importance as a necessary discipline in both functional analysis and differential equations. In my opinion Pazy has done an outstanding job in presenting both the abstract theory and basic applications in a clear and interesting manner. The choice and order of the material, the clarity of the proofs, and the overall presentation make this an excellent place for both researchers and students to learn about C0 semigroups." #Bulletin Applied Mathematical Sciences 4/85#1 "In spite of the other monographs on the subject, the reviewer can recommend that of Pazy as being particularly written, with a bias noticeably different from that of the other volumes. Pazy's decision to give a connected account of the applications to partial differential equations in the last two chapters was a particularly happy one, since it enables one to see what the theory can achieve much better than would the insertion of occasional examples. The chapters achieve a very nice balance between being so easy as to appear disappointing, and so sophisticated that they are incomprehensible except to the expert." #Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society#2

This research monograph gives a detailed account of a theory which is mainly concerned with certain classes of degenerate differential operators, Markov semigroups and approximation processes. These mathematical objects are generated by arbitrary Markov operators acting on spaces of continuous functions defined on compact convex sets; the study of the interrelations between them constitutes one of the distinguishing features of the book. Among other things, this theory provides useful tools for studying large classes of initial-boundary value evolution problems, the main aim being to obtain a constructive approximation to the associated positive C0-semigroups by means of iterates of suitable positive approximating operators. As a consequence, a qualitative analysis of the solutions to the evolution problems can be efficiently developed. The book is mainly addressed to research mathematicians interested in modern approximation theory by positive linear operators and/or in the theory of positive C0-semigroups of operators and evolution equations. It could also serve as a textbook for a graduate level course.

The Fourier transform and the Laplace transform of a positive measure share, together with its moment sequence, a positive definiteness property which under certain regularity assumptions is characteristic for such expressions. This is formulated in exact terms in the famous theorems of Bochner, Bernstein-Widder and Hamburger. All three theorems can be viewed as special cases of a general theorem about functions qJ on abelian semigroups with involution (S, +, *) which are positive definite in the sense that the matrix (qJ(sJ + Sk» is positive definite for all finite choices of elements St, . . . , Sn from S. The three basic results mentioned above correspond to (~, +, x* = -x), ([0, 00[, +, x* = x) and (No, +, n* = n). The purpose of this book is to provide a treatment of these positive definite functions on abelian semigroups with involution. In doing so we also discuss related topics such as negative definite functions, completely mono tone functions and Hoeffding-type inequalities. We view these subjects as important ingredients of harmonic analysis on semigroups. It has been our aim, simultaneously, to write a book which can serve as a textbook for an advanced graduate course, because we feel that the notion of positive definiteness is an important and basic notion which occurs in mathematics as often as the notion of a Hilbert space.
