Cognitive Foundations Of Musical Pitch written by Carol L. Krumhansl and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-11-15 with Psychology categories.

This book addresses the central problem of music cognition: how listeners' responses move beyond mere registration of auditory events to include the organization, interpretation, and remembrance of these events in terms of their function in a musical context of pitch and rhythm. Equally important, the work offers an analysis of the relationship between the psychological organization of music and its internal structure. Combining over a decade of original research on music cognition with an overview of the available literature, the work will be of interest to cognitive and physiological psychologists, psychobiologists, musicians, music researchers, and music educators. The author provides the necessary background in experimental methodology and music theory so that no specialized knowledge is required for following her major arguments.

One of the great mysteries of music is how it affects us in multitude of ways. Whether talking about our individual tastes as listeners, or individual differences as performers, what are the psychological qualities that can turn some people into great musicians, but not others? Is it down to genes, sheer hard work, or some other quality in the individual? The Natural Musician is the story of how we become composers, performers, or just discriminating listeners. It searches for those psychological traits essential for turning one into a musician. Unlike many others, Kirnarskaya does believe in the existence of talent, but argues that it is due to multiplicative factors, which she describes, analyses, and shows how to test. She also sheds light on the essence and origins of perfect pitch, examines the triumphs and tortures of musical prodigies, and considers the implications of her theories for the teaching of music. After a foreword from the legendary conductor, Gennady Rodhestvensky, the book looks at our basic musical faculties - how we perceive sounds, distinguish their pitch and structure, and recognise rhythm. It then examines the nature of musical empathy - what it is that allows us to perceive and emotionally connect with music. The second part of the book focuses on the creative processes behind writing music. The third section deals with music education, looking at the role of innate and inherited characteristics in the formation of talent, and considering why many who excel at an early age, burn out later on. The book ends exploring how musical development can shape the human brain, strengthening other cognitive faculties, including those unrelated to music. This is a book that will fascinate anyone with an interest in music and musicians, from the fields of music psychology and education, to musicians themselves, whether amateur and professional.

Indigenous And Decolonizing Studies In Education written by Linda Tuhiwai Smith and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-14 with Education categories.

Indigenous and decolonizing perspectives on education have long persisted alongside colonial models of education, yet too often have been subsumed within the fields of multiculturalism, critical race theory, and progressive education. Timely and compelling, Indigenous and Decolonizing Studies in Education features research, theory, and dynamic foundational readings for educators and educational researchers who are looking for possibilities beyond the limits of liberal democratic schooling. Featuring original chapters by authors at the forefront of theorizing, practice, research, and activism, this volume helps define and imagine the exciting interstices between Indigenous and decolonizing studies and education. Each chapter forwards Indigenous principles - such as Land as literacy and water as life - that are grounded in place-specific efforts of creating Indigenous universities and schools, community organizing and social movements, trans and Two Spirit practices, refusals of state policies, and land-based and water-based pedagogies.

Creative Collaboration In Teaching written by Marcelo Giglio and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-29 with Education categories.

Creative Collaboration in Teaching focuses on the question of how best to facilitate creative collaboration among students in the classroom setting—with a focus on music composition and from the perspective of social-cultural psychology. This book is comprehensive, cutting-edge and scholarly in its approach. Marcelo Giglio’s attention to music and creativity is detailed enough to satisfy any researcher, educator or teacher educator; but at the same time, his research approach, classroom observations and overriding recommendations can be easily applied to a wide range of subject areas. Giglio combines a rigorous review of the relevant literatures on creativity and social interactions with the reporting and analysis of his own original data across the world, and then goes on to support this important work with detailed descriptions of classroom episodes—student-to-student and teacher-to-student interactions. By combining these three elements, this book offers socio-creative and pedagogical models for education in practice as well as teacher education and research.

The Hatred Of Music written by Pascal Quignard and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-28 with Music categories.

Throughout Pascal Quignard’s distinguished literary career, music has been a recurring obsession. As a musician he organized the International Festival of Baroque Opera and Theatre at Versailles in the early 1990s, and thus was instrumental in the rediscovery of much forgotten classical music. Yet in 1994 he abruptly renounced all musical activities. The Hatred of Music is Quignard’s masterful exploration of the power of music and what history reveals about the dangers it poses. From prehistoric chants to challenging contemporary compositions, Quignard reflects on music of all kinds and eras. He draws on vast cultural knowledge—the Bible, Greek mythology, early modern history, modern philosophy, the Holocaust, and more—to develop ten accessible treatises on music. In each of these small masterpieces the author exposes music’s potential to manipulate, to mesmerize, to domesticate. Especially disturbing is his scrutiny of the role music played in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. Quignard’s provocative book takes on particular relevance today, as we find ourselves surrounded by music as never before in history.
