This study explores the ways that two learning environments, located in structurally different spaces, provide low-income Latino adolescents with opportunities for critical civic development. Through two case studies, I explore the relationships between the characteristics and youth development outcomes of two critical learning sites. One of the sites is a community-based youth organizing group that addresses issues of educational injustice and the other is a high school social studies classroom with a social justice focused teacher. I highlight the characteristics of critical learning sites that promote engagement, which in turn fosters critical civic development. I examine critical civic development from an individual, site based and structural analysis. I provide a model for understanding and categorizing individual critical civic development, examine the site-based characteristics that influence youth development and explore the structural features that provided affordances and challenges to educator efforts to promote critical civic development in each site.

Honneth focuses on the dialog between French and German social theory that was beginning at the time of Michel Foucault's death. It traces the common roots of the work of Foucault and Jürgen Habermas to a basic text of the last generation of critical theorists—Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno's Dialectic of Enlightenment—and draws from this connection the outline of a program that might unite and surpass their seemingly irreconcilable methods of critiquing power structures. In doing so, Honneth provides a constructive and nonpolemical framework for comparisons between the two theorists. And he presents a novel interpretation of Foucault's analysis of social systems. Honneth traces the internal contradictions in critical theory through an analysis of Horkheimer's early programmatic writings, the Dialectic of Enlightenment, and Adorno's later social-theoretical writings. He shows how Habermas and Foucault in their distinctive ways reinserted the social world into critical theory but argues that neither operation has been wholly successful. What are emotions, where do they originate and how are they brought into being? While from antiquity to early modernity, affects or passions were mostly conceived of as external physiological forces which act upon a passive subject, modern conceptions generally locate emotions within the subject. Drawing on the dichotomy of “interiority / exteriority” as a complex interdependent relationship, they mostly envision emotions as interior processes. Contemporary conceptions of emotion from such different fields as human geography, art history and cognitive sciences recently started to challenge this notion of internal emotions by developing alternative descriptions of externalized emotion. This book reevaluates premodern, modern and contemporary conceptions of affects, passions and emotion by analyzing various historical manifestations of the discourse on emotion. Unlike most previous research, which ‐ especially in the German tradition ‐ often focused exclusively on the rise of the modern (Romantic) interiority without paying attention to the underlying dichotomy of “interiority / exteriority”, this study aims to explore the historical preconditions, the internal logic and the possible shortcomings that inform our thinking on emotion.

In April 2013, the International Network on Innovative Apprenticeship (INAP) hosted its fifth international conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, in co-operation with the International Labor Organization (ILO), bringing together researchers, policy makers, and practitioners from 34 nations. The title of the conference - "Apprenticeship in a Globalized World: Premises, Promises and Pitfalls" - points out the need for apprenticeship to deliver on its promise of workplace skills and for it to develop and change as world economies develop. An international exchange of ideas among researchers from all over the world is necessary to identify cases of good practice and facilitate the transfer of knowledge and innovation, also within the frame of informal apprenticeships.
