This updated 2nd edition will benefit all those interested in improving health care and health education. It seeks to respond to the challenge of the changing health care situation and clearly sets out a range of different methods that will enhance successful teaching and learning. Each teaching method is described in its own chapter and each chapter includes practical suggestions for implementation, as well as outlining advantages and disadvantages, questions and answers and a self-test feature. The text has been thoroughly revised to meet the requirements of outcomes-based education, and includes new chapters on narrative as a teaching method, values clarification and evaluation and assessment. Importantly, this edition strives to meet the HIV/AIDS health education needs. Almost every chapter provides a specific method for teaching and learning about particular aspects of this condition. This culturally-sensitive book assumes that English is being used as an additional language and that the reader may have no background in teaching and learning theory. It is rich in case studies and applications. incorporates traditionally held beliefs and is exceptionally practical in nature. This book will be a valuable resource for students, practitioners, and teachers alike. The teaching methods discussed in the text will be extremely useful for community health workers, health care assistants, nurses, social workers, medical doctors, teachers and agricultural extension officers.

A comprehensive, step-by-step guide to teaching methods that can make the training of primary health care workers more relevant and effective. Noting that training courses often fail to prepare students for real conditions in the field, the book argues for job-oriented training focused on tasks, skills, and attitudes rather than on the memorization of facts from various academic disciplines. To this end, the book itself uses numerous practical examples and stories to anchor concepts and theories in real experiences, while exercises and tests help readers think through exactly what the job of the health worker involves on a day-to-day basis. Now in its second edition, the manual has been substantially revised and expanded following more than a decade of widespread use in over 30 developing countries. The manual is organized in four parts. Part one deals with the general problem of what students should learn. Chapters also illustrate areas of knowledge, often included in courses that are irrelevant to job performance and therefore useless to students. Part two helps readers choose the best teaching methods for each part of the course and offers some advice on using each method effectively. Part three, on performance assessment, describes traditional and newer methods for testing whether students can perform the work for which they are being trained. Emphasis is placed on the strengths and limitations of the different methods for assessing decision-making skills, communication skills, and the ability to perform procedures correctly. The final part gives practical tips and advice on how to plan, write, produce, and evaluate learning materials, from single-page handouts for use in lessons, through to complete manuals which health workers can use after the course as permanent job aids.

Primary care medicine is the new frontier in medicine. Every nation in the world has recognized the necessity to deliver personal and primary care to its people. This includes first-contact care, care based in a positive and caring personal rela tionship, care by a single healthcare provider for the majority of the patient's prob lems, coordination of all care by the patient's personal provider, advocacy for the patient by the provider, the provision of preventive care and psychosocial care, as well as care for episodes of acute and chronic illness. These facets of care work most effectively when they are embedded in a coherent integrated approach. The support for primary care derives from several significant trends. First, technologically based care costs have rocketed beyond reason or availability, occurring in the face of exploding populations and diminishing real resources in many parts of the world, even in the wealthier nations. Simultaneously, the primary care disciplines-general internal medicine and pediatrics and family medicine-have matured significantly. They have become viable alternatives to the specialty approach to care with its potential dehumanization, coordination problems, and increased cost.

A 1983 committee report is presented of the World Health Organization Expert Committee on the Education and Training of Nurse Teachers and Managers with Special Regard to Primary Health Care. After discussing the changing context of health care and trends in primary health care, changes required in education and training in health systems based on the primary health care approach are addressed, including the role of nursing personnel. The current preparation of nurse teachers and managers in post-basic education programs is examined, with attention to facilities and teaching/learning resources; students, teachers, and administrators; and curriculum. In addition to identifying competencies and objectives of post-basic education, the implementation and evaluation of programs are considered. Areas for change and factors influencing the process of change are discussed, including health personnel policy, attitudes and values, leadership, teachers and students in post-basic schools, the location of educational programs, resources and administrative support, research, and nurses as agents of change. Brief case studies for Senegal and Thailand are included. (SW)
