The triangular relationship between the social, the political, and the cultural has opened up social and political theory to new challenges. [Este libro] pertenece al campo de la historia de la educación. Pero conocidas las tradicionales deficiencias que en Colombia muestra ese sector del análisis histórico, habría que advertirle al lector que se trata de algo que va mucho más lejos y en otras direcciones de lo que habitualmente se nos ofrece bajo ese rubro. Y ello porque el objeto analizado, definido de una manera flexible, como lo indica el propio subtítulo, se encuentra en el cruce de varios elementos que no son sencillamente "educativos". Por una parte, la presencia determinante de la política en una sociedad posrrevolucionaria (1821-1886) y por otra, el mundo de los letrados (en sus distintas jerarquías) y la cultura intelectual de una época, analizada en una de sus mayores dimensiones, es decir como cultura escolar, observada en su manera particular de hacerse cultura de la sociedad a partir de los bancos escolares. [...] Estamos sin lugar a dudas frente a un buen libro de análisis histórico y es de esperar que en el futuro obras de similar naturaleza sigan apareciendo y sirvan para animar los debates sobre la historia de Colombia, por fuera de cualquier "espíritu de partido" y sin las presiones desmedidas que la política del día impone al análisis histórico hoy en Colombia.
