This book is the first of its genre to explore the use of Arabizi, the Romanized script of the Arabic language that is used online or in chat apps, in the Arabic as a Foreign Language (AFL) classroom. It fills a noticeable, and glaring, gap in teaching a non-Romanized language through Romanized representation by observing and studying Arabizi as a resource that is yet to be acknowledged. As such, the author aptly, and concurrently, addresses concerns and problems that arise in AFL learning. An essential resource for studies in language acquisition, the author carves a new niche in the study of phonology, and phonetics, particularly so in L1 and L2 studies, with succinct and up-to-date examples. Relevant to applied linguistics and language educators in Arabic, it also draws comparisons between Chinese and Arabic alphabets in analyzing L1 and L2 purposes, making it a unique linguistic comparative contribution to the study of languages in classroom settings.

This book explores how resurgent nationalism across the globe demands re-examination of many of the theories and practices in applied linguistics and language teaching as political forces seek to limit the movement of people, goods, and services across national borders and, in some cases, enact violence upon those with linguistic and/or ethnic backgrounds that differ from that of the dominant culture. The authors who have contributed to this volume provide careful analysis of nationalist discourses and actions in Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, China, Colombia, Germany, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and Vietnam. They offer their unique historical and cultural perspectives on the complex relationship between language, identity, and nationhood in each of these countries, as well as practical responses to the fraught political situations that many language educators and policy makers now face. This book will appeal to researchers in applied linguistics and language teaching, as well as second and foreign language teaching professionals working and living in countries where nationalist sentiments are on the rise.

This book provides a nuanced portrait of the complexities found within the cultural and linguistic landscape of the United Arab Emirates, unpacking the ever-shifting dynamics between English and Arabic in today’s era of superdiversity. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach which draws on a rich set of data from questionnaires to focus groups with Emirati students, Emirati schoolteachers, and expatriate university teachers, Hopkyns problematizes the common binary East-West paradigm focused on the tension between the use of English and Arabic in the UAE. Key issues emerging from the resulting analysis include the differing attitudes towards English and in particular, English Medium Instruction, the impact of this tension on identities, and the ways in which the two languages are employed in distinct ways on an everyday scale. The volume will particularly appeal to students and scholars interested in issues around language and identity, language policy and planning, multilingualism, translanguaging, and language in education.

This book takes a long hard look at the text-messaging phenomenon and its effects on literacy, language, and society. Young people who seem to spend much of their time texting sometimes appear unable or unwilling to write much else. Media outrage has ensued. "It is bleak, bald, sad shorthand," writes a commentator in the UK Guardian. "It masks dyslexia, poor spelling, and mental laziness." Exam answers using textese and reports that examiners find them acceptable have led to headlines in the tabloids and leaders in the qualities. Do young people text as much as people think? Do adults? Does texting spell the end of literacy? Is there a panic in the media? David Crystal looks at the evidence. He investigates how texting began and who uses it, why and what for. He shows how to interpret its mix of pictograms, logograms, abbreviations, symbols, and wordplay, and how it works in different languages. He explores the ways similar devices have been used in different eras and discovers that the texting system of conveying sounds and meaning goes back a long way, all the way in fact to the origins of writing - and he concludes that far from hindering literacy, texting may turn out to help it. The growing superdiversity around the world now appears to be the norm. In traditional English-speaking inner circle nations, it is becoming increasingly rare to find classrooms with students who come from monocultural and monolingual backgrounds. However, teaching practices remain based on Anglocentric standards and perspectives even when most of the English speakers in the world are no longer just the monolingual speakers of the language. Research in bilingualism and multilingualism reverberate the potential of translanguaging as a pedagogical practice. This is to leverage all the linguistic, cultural, and semiotic resources of learners so that they can actively engage in the language, literacy, and content area learning processes in the classroom. However, even though it has gained ground in theory and research, it has not been upheld in instructional practice, especially in the Anglophone nations. While some regions view translanguaging as a pathway to educational justice, others face barriers such as limited resources, administrative constraints, or lack of teacher training. Despite its promise, concerns remain around the selective use of languages and the risk of reinforcing existing linguistic hierarchies. Global Perspective on Issues and Trends in Educational Translanguaging explores translanguaging pedagogies from both monolingual English-speaking contexts and multilingual and multicultural contexts. It examines a monolingual-multilingual pairing of theoretical, research, and practical perspectives from around the world, assessing how translanguaging pedagogies are practiced and researched worldwide. This book covers topics such as indigenous studies, migrant learners, and pedagogy, and is a useful resource for educators, language experts, academicians, researchers, and scientists.

The study concentrates on the origins, developments and current directions of the discipline called Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL) within the Arab world and partially outside of it during the last sixty years, namely between 1958 and 2018. The most influential scholars, authors, educators and those significant works that contributed to the development of the discipline are taken into account. In addition, special attention is paid to the TAFL institutes, which are considered as epicenters of the activities and that hosted important meetings, allowing scholars to gather around the same table and discuss approaches, trends and methods used in the field of TAFL. All these aspects converge in one comprehensive research, which is enriched by the narration of the main socio-political changes that affected the Middle Eastern region recent history.
