This is an exposition of the internal or spiritual sense of the books of Genesis and Exodus, according to the law of correspondences. It unfolds the spiritual significance of the creation; of the stories of Adam and Eve, and of the deluge; of the lives of the patriarchs; of the captivity of the chosen people in Egypt and of their deliverance therefrom, and of their subsequent history; of the ritual of the Jewish religion, its sacrifices and observances:—and in general, traces the foreshadowing through both books of the incarnation and glorification of the Lord Jesus Christ. Many passages from other parts of the Word are also fully explained. Relations of things heard and seen in the spiritual world are interspersed, explaining the process of dying, and of man's resuscitation and conscious entrance into the interior life; the nature of the soul; of heaven and heavenly joy;and of hell, its nature and its miseries. It also treats of the Grand Man, or the whole angelic heaven, and the correspondence of the societies therein with the different organs and senses of the body; the origin and correspondence of diseases; the spirits and inhabitants of the various planets, and of other earths in the starry heavens. All of which are related to a true understanding of the Divine Word. This is book #4 out of 12 and covers Genesis 23 - 27.

Excerpt from The Heavenly Arcana, Vol. 4: Disclosed Which Are in the Sacred Scripture or Word of the Lord 1984. Few can believe that there is in the Word an internal sense which does not at all shine forth from the letter; and this because it is so remote from the sense of the letter, that it is, as it were, distant as heaven from earth. But that the sense of the letter contains such things in itself, and that it is representative and significative of arcana which no one sees but the Lord, and angels from the Lord, is evident from what has been said throughout Part First. The sense of the letter bears a relation to the internal sense like that of the human body to the soul. While a man is in the body, and thinks from bodily things, he knows almost nothing about the soul; for the functions of the body are different from those of the soul, so different that if the functions of the soul were disclosed, they would not be recognized. So it is, also, with the internals of the Word. In its internals is its soul, that is, its life; and these internals have regard solely to the Lord, His kingdom, the Church, and what is of His kingdom and Church in man; and when these are regarded, it is the Word of the Lord; for then life itself is in them. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made, by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light appeareth in the darkness, but the darkness comprehended it not. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt within us and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth (i. 1 - 5, Few know what is here meant by the Word.
