Kaum ein kulturwissenschaftliches Fach ist in den Medien in solcher Weise positiv besetzt wie die Arch ologie. Mit diesem Privileg wird jedoch leichtsinnig umgegangen. Die vorliegende Untersuchung versteht sich als Aufruf zu einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Fach Arch ologie und einer sozial verantwortlicheren, ffentlich engagierteren und damit relevanteren Arch ologie. Das Buch widmet sich der Repr sentation des Faches und der Inszenierung arch ologischer Inhalte in einem Medium, ber das ein Gro teil der Bev lkerung mit Arch ologie in Kontakt kommt. Im Rahmen einer vergleichenden Analyse und Bewertung einer Auswahl an arch ologischen TV-Dokumentationen wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche arch ologiebezogenen Inhalte sie transportieren, welche ffentlichen Bilder und Assoziationen sie pr gen und in welcher Relation diese zur arch ologischen Realit t stehen. Neben methodischen Anleihen in der Filmanalyse und unter Zuhilfenahme geschichtswissenschaftlicher Ans tze wird eine arch ologische Perspektive auf den Untersuchungsgegenstand geboten. Bei aller scharfen Kritik an arch ologisch fragw rdigen Formaten verf llt die Forschungsarbeit jedoch nicht einer einseitigen Medienschelte. Entgegen typisch wissenschaftlichen Abwehrreflexen l sst sich dem Fernsehen keine alleinige Verantwortung f r problematische Dokumentationen zuweisen. Arch ologen tragen eine Mitverantwortung f r die ffentliche Repr sentation ihres Faches, v.a. wenn sie unreflektiert ihre Rolle bei der Mitgestaltung und Perpetuierung stereotyper Bilder einnehmen und sich medial regelrecht durch den Kakao ziehen lassen! In a crucial shift within posthumanistic media studies, Bernhard Siegert dissolves the concept of media into a network of operations that reproduce, displace, process, and reflect the distinctions fundamental for a given culture. Cultural Techniques aims to forget our traditional understanding of media so as to redefine the concept through something more fundamental than the empiricist study of a medium’s individual or collective uses or of its cultural semantics or aesthetics. Rather, Siegert seeks to relocate media and culture on a level where the distinctions between object and performance, matter and form, human and nonhuman, sign and channel, the symbolic and the real are still in the process of becoming. The result is to turn ontology into a domain of all that is meant in German by the word Kultur. Cultural techniques comprise not only self-referential symbolic practices like reading, writing, counting, or image-making. The analysis of artifacts as cultural techniques emphasizes their ontological status as “in-betweens,” shifting from firstorder to second-order techniques, from the technical to the artistic, from object to sign, from the natural to the cultural, from the operational to the representational. Cultural Techniques ranges from seafaring, drafting, and eating to the production of the sign-signaldistinction in old and new media, to the reproduction of anthropological difference, to the study of trompe-l’oeils, grids, registers, and doors. Throughout, Siegert addresses fundamental questions of how ontological distinctions can be replaced by chains of operations that process those alleged ontological distinctions within the ontic. Grounding posthumanist theory both historically and technically, this book opens up a crucial dialogue between new German media theory and American postcybernetic discourses.

In Ancient Marbles to American Shores, Stephen L. The archive as a crucible of twentieth-century modernism and key for understanding contemporary art. The typewriter, the card index, and the filing cabinet: these are technologies and modalities of the archive. To the bureaucrat, archives contain little more than garbage, paperwork no longer needed; to the historian, on the other hand, the archive's content stands as a quasi-objective correlative of the “living” past. Twentieth-century art made use of the archive in a variety of ways—from what Spieker calls Marcel Duchamp's “anemic archive” of readymades and El Lissitzky's Demonstration Rooms to the compilations of photographs made by such postwar artists as Susan Hiller and Gerhard Richter. In The Big Archive, Sven Spieker investigates the archive—as both bureaucratic institution and index of evolving attitudes toward contingent time in science and art—and finds it to be a crucible of twentieth-century modernism. Dadaists, constructivists, and Surrealists favored discontinuous, nonlinear archives that resisted hermeneutic reading and ordered presentation. Spieker argues that the use of archives by such contemporary artists as Hiller, Richter, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Walid Raad, and Boris Mikhailov responds to and continues this attack on the nineteenth-century archive and its objectification of the historical process. Spieker considers archivally driven art in relation to changing media technologies—the typewriter, the telephone, the telegraph, film. And he connects the archive to a particularly modern visuality, showing that the avant-garde used the archive as something of a laboratory for experimental inquiries into the nature of vision and its relation to time. The Big Archive offers us the first critical monograph on an overarching motif in twentieth-century art.
