We often assume that works of visual art are meant to be seen. Yet that assumption may be a modern prejudice. The ancient world - from China to Greece, Rome to Mexico - provides many examples of statues, paintings, and other images that were not intended to be visible. Instead of being displayed, they were hidden, buried, or otherwise obscured. In this third volume in the Visual Conversations in Art & Archaeology series, leading scholars working at the intersection of archaeology and the history of art address the fundamental question of art's visibility. What conditions must be met, what has to be in place, for a work of art to be seen at all? The answer is both historical and methodological; it concerns ancient societies and modern disciplines, and encompasses material circumstances, perceptual capacities, technologies of visualization, protocols of classification, and a great deal more. The emerging field of archaeological art history is uniquely suited to address such questions. Intrinsically comparative, this approach cuts across traditional ethnic, religious, and chronological categories to confront the academic present with the historical past. The goal is to produce a new art history that is at once cosmopolitan in method and global in scope, and in doing so establish new ways of seeing - new conditions of visibility - for shared objects of study.

Palaeopathology of Children: Identification of Pathological Conditions in the Human Skeletal Remains of Non-Adults provides archaeological examples of pathological child remains with varying degrees of disease manifestation, and where possible, presents illustrations of individually affected bones to help with identification. The structure and inclusion of photographs and summary diagnostic tables make this suitable for use as a textbook. Each chapter includes a table of international archaeological cases collated by the author from published and unpublished literature. Child skeletal remains come in a variety of different sizes, with bones appearing and fusing at different times during growth. Identifying pathology in such unfamiliar bones can be a challenge, and we often rely on photographs of clinical radiographs or intact anatomical specimens to try and interpret the lesions we see in archaeological material. These are usually the most extreme examples of the disease, and do not account for the wide degree of variation we may see in skeletal remains. An Archaeological Investigation is usually undertaken to provide information: - In response to a proposed development which could cause damage to archaeological remains. - As part of the planning process (within the framework of appropriate national planning policy guidance notes) and/or development plan policy. - As part of an Environmental Impact Assessment. - Inconnection with management plans and mitigation strategies of private, local and national or international bodies. - Outside the planning process (e.g infrastructure projects, ecclesiastical developemtn, coastal erosion, agriculture, forestry and countryside management, works by public utilities and statutory undertakers) Where the Investigation finds Archaeological Remains they are recorded, analysed and interpreted and the findings disseminated as appropriate. These Conditions of Contract, the first of its kind, regulate the business relationship between the Employer and the specialist Archaeological Contractor during the course of an Arcaeological Investigation. The Contract retains a pattern traditional in civil engineering contracts, with an investigation commissioned by an Employer (Landowners, developers etc.), designed or approved by an Engineer and carried out by a specialist Archaeological Contractor, only that the term 'Consultant' is used instead of 'Engineer'. Its advantages include: - Providing parties to the Contract with and "advanced warning" of circumstances that may give rise to additional costs or delay or which may warrant a significant change tothe scope of the Investigation. - Enabling the niminisation of additional cost and/or delay as well as potential for dispute. - Minimising the incidence of disputes and resolving those that may arise in aspeedy and non-confrontational manner. On that basis that many archaeological contracts will fall within the provisions of Part 2 of the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996, this Contract has been drafted to comply with the legislation with the intention that the variouw Statutory 'Schemes for Construction Contracts' should not apply.

This book addresses the true 'landscape' perspective approach that archaeologists in Italy, and in many parts of the Mediterranean, use to study the archaeology of landscapes, marking a departure from the traditional site-based approach. This open access volume provides for the first time a comprehensive description and scientific evaluation of underwater archaeological finds referring to human occupation of the continental shelf around the coastlines of Europe and the Mediterranean when sea levels were lower than present. These are the largest body of underwater finds worldwide, amounting to over 2500 find spots, ranging from individual stone tools to underwater villages with unique conditions of preservation. The material reviewed here ranges in date from the Lower Palaeolithic period to the Bronze Age and covers 20 countries bordering all the major marine basins from the Atlantic coasts of Ireland and Norway to the Black Sea, and from the western Baltic to the eastern Mediterranean. The finds from each country are presented in their archaeological context, with information on the history of discovery, conditions of preservation and visibility, their relationship to regional changes in sea-level and coastal geomorphology, and the institutional arrangements for their investigation and protection. Editorial introductions summarise the findings from each of the major marine basins. There is also a final section with extensive discussion of the historical background and the legal and regulatory frameworks that inform the management of the underwater cultural heritage and collaboration between offshore industries, archaeologists and government agencies. The volume is based on the work of COST Action TD0902 SPLASHCOS, a multi-disciplinary and multi-national research network supported by the EU-funded COST organisation (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). The primary readership is research and professional archaeologists, marine and Quaternary scientists, cultural-heritage managers, commercial and governmental organisations, policy makers, and all those with an interest in the sea floor of the continental shelf and the human impact of changes in climate, sea-level and coastal geomorphology.

The Bronze Age and Early Iron Age saw many developments in metalworking, social structure, food production, nutrition, and diet. At the same time, networks in Europe intensified and human impact on the environment changed in character. What influence did these transformations have on daily life? Which proxies can researchers use to study these topics? This volume presents scientific contributions from different fields of expertise within modern archaeology in order to investigate past living conditions through aspects of the archaeological record related to production (e.g. of food and metal), well-being (e.g. diet, health), human relations (e.g. violence), and the local environment (e.g. pollution, waste disposal, and water management). It also critically addresses contemporary graphic representations of Bronze Age living conditions. This volume compiles papers from a session with the same title organized for an international open workshop of the Graduate School 'Human Development in Landscapes', entitled 'Socio-Environmental Dynamics over the Last 12,000 Years: The Development of Landscapes IV', which took place in 2017, in Kiel, Germany.
