Il volume contiene una sezione monografica dedicata a “La datazione delle malte in architettura” che raccoglie dieci contributi di singoli studiosi o gruppi, italiani e stranieri, che da tempo si occupano del tema. Senza pretendere di fornire un panorama esaustivo delle ricerche a livello internazionale, la curatrice della sezione ha invitato alcuni studiosi a scrivere saggi di tipo metodologico sui metodi di datazione archeologica e archeometrica delle malte che, al momento, sembrano fornire i migliori esiti sul campo. La richiesta per tutti è stata quella di fornire i principi di base del metodo, di mettere in luce i limiti di applicazione, le problematiche e i margini di miglioramento e studio ma soprattutto di evidenziare il rapporto con il contesto archeologico. La sfida è senza dubbio stata quella di avvicinare fisici, chimici, architetti, ingegneri e archeologi in un confronto aperto sui rispettivi modi di fare ricerca e di divulgarne gli esiti. A sette saggi di contenuto metodologico si affiancano tre contributi di tipo applicativo in grado di esemplificare alcuni dei metodi di datazione descritti. Nella sezione “Casi di studio” trovano poi spazio contributi sull’archeologia del cantiere della c.d. stoà - basilica di Hierapolis, sulle chiese di San Vittore di Brembate Sotto e di Santa Maria a Buiano in Casentino, sulle fortificazioni del Titano (San Marino) e sulla stratigrafia ancora osservabile, dopo i restauri di fine ’800, nel Castello di Milano. Un ultimo intervento mette a confronto, con un taglio che ci auguriamo apra un dibattito, le esperienze di archeologia dell’architettura in Francia, Italia e Svizzera.
