This study is a historical archaeological analysis of a territorial area including the Island of Elba, Monte Pisano and the neighboring plain, using the methodology of 'light' archeology: stratigraphic reading of the elevations and reading of the historical landscape. The purpose of the study was to analyze, within the territory under consideration, the spread of a religious building (TE 1) and understand the reasons behind the choice of a specific architectural language, even in political and cultural contexts very different from each other, by both religious and lay clients who chose to represent their prestige in this way.

Oltre quaranta anni di ricerche nella Maremma toscana, uno dei territori meglio indagati archeologicamente a livello europeo; un progetto ERC-Advanced, nEU-Med, che ha consentito di rileggere vecchi dati e produrne di nuovi grazie ad un’intensa ricerca multidisciplinare; un tema, i beni pubblici, in questi anni al centro dell’interesse degli storici delle fonti documentarie, qui declinato attraverso il dato materiale. Sono queste le basi di partenza del volume, nel quale i risultati acquisiti dalla ricerca degli ultimi anni all’interno di un’area eletta a caso studio, sono stati innestati su quelli elaborati nei decenni precedenti, con l’obiettivo di individuare i markers materiali dei beni regi e capirne la loro formazione e gestione tra IX ed XI secolo. I risultati della ricerca interpretati in una nuova prospettiva concorrono ad individuare una possibile chiave di lettura delle realtà storiche di questa area toscana, capace di generare risposte agganciate a più ampie tematiche: il ruolo del publicum in rapporto alle aristocrazie e alle comunità locali; le trasformazioni dei paesaggi antropici e naturali; la peculiarità di produzioni e scambi; i tempi e i modi dell’incastellamento; la crescita economica delle campagne prima del grande balzo in avanti del XII secolo.

Numerose sono le tecniche costruttive di età romana. In questo numero ne discutono alcuni specifici aspetti tre contributi nella sezione “casi studio”: relativamente alla città di Argentomagus, alle mura di Populonia, all’opus africanus e alle tecniche a telaio litico in Etruria e Campania. Nella prima parte del volume vengono invece pubblicati gli atti di un seminario che si è tenuto a Padova il 25 ottobre del 2013, dedicato a “Tecniche costruttive e cicli edilizi tra VI e IX secolo”. Le relazioni riguardano tre aree geografiche chiave nel dibattito storiografico: alcune regioni del Medio Oriente, dove è accertata una continuità, in età bizantina ed islamica, della tecnica muraria in opera quadrata; la Penisola iberica, per la quale si raffrontano due posizioni antitetiche tra chi la ritiene sviluppata già in epoca visigota e con un’influenza bizantina e chi la collega invece all’arrivo degli Arabi nell’VIII secolo; la Francia, dove le opere in pietra di cava sono assai rare e di datazione controversa; infine l’Italia, dove il confronto è tra i territori bizantini, in particolare Roma e la Sardegna, e quelli longobardi del Nord Italia dove l’opera quadrata non compare che con il Romanico. Il quadro che ne emerge è assai variegato e ancora aperto, il che richiede ulteriori ricerche sia su casi di studio specifici, come quelli qui presentati delle cripte delle basiliche patriarcali di Aquileia e di Venezia o sul San Michele Arcangelo di Perugia, sia per sintesi regionali in aree geografiche, come le coste mediterranee dell’Africa, non considerate in questa sede. E per quanto riguarda l’opera quadrata, l’attenzione è sulla sua ripresa in epoca romanica, argomento di cui si è discusso nel seminario pubblicato nel n. XVII della rivista e che viene ora riproposto in un articolo sulla Liguria di Ponente tra XII e XIII secolo.

Il volume accoglie, oltre a quattro relazioni di argomento vario (due di stampo metodologico e due casi studio), gli atti di un seminario che si è tenuto a Trento nell’ottobre del 2012, dedicato a “Tecniche costruttive e cantieri del romanico in Italia settentrionale”. Un tema, questo, spesso dibattuto, ma che non ha ancora trovato una soddisfacente sistemazione storiografica, sia per quanto riguarda la fase di incubazione in età ottoniana, debitrice della tradizione bizantina e carolingia, sia per le diverse tendenze che si manifestano nel corso dell’XI secolo. La sua evoluzione è infatti complessa, in relazione al particolarismo della committenza aristocratica in Italia settentrionale e alle influenze delle architetture sviluppatesi in altre regioni dell’Europa occidentale. La discussione critica, anche in questo caso, deve ripartire da uno studio analitico delle stratigrafie murarie e delle tecniche costruttive, sulle quali ci si sofferma in sette contributi.

Presents us with a comprehensive point of departure for the study of artistic developments in the Late Middle Ages, from the Norman Conquest at the turn of the twelfth century to the coming of the Knights in 1530. This book shows us that Late Medieval Malta was not an artistic desert, that patronage in Mdina was surprisingly well-informed, and that the Renaissance reached Malta before the coming of the Knights. Architecture, however, lagged behind, and the stylistic and technical innovations reflected the conservatism of an insular society. Through the art and architecture of that period, Professor Buhagiar outlines the Christianization and Latinization process that moved the islands away from a Muslim and North African bias, to a South European sphere of influence. The author's many years of meticulous research and academic activity have resulted in an excellently presented book that can be enjoyed by both the academic and the general reader. Mario Buhagiar is Professor of History of Art and Head of the History of Art Programme at the University of Malta, which he was responsible for establishing in 1988. The author is also responsible for the Late Roman and Byzantine Catacombs and Related Burial Places in the Maltese Islands, and The Iconography of the Maltese Islands 1400-1900: Painting, as well as numerous articles in various journals, both local and foreign.
