Il numero 34.1, 2022 della rivista Archeologia e Calcolatori è caratterizzato dalla pubblicazione degli Atti di due Convegni internazionali. Il primo riguarda la sedicesima edizione del Convegno ArcheoFOSS, dal titolo “Open Software, Hardware, Processes, Data and Formats in Archaeological Research”, svoltosi a Roma il 22-23 settembre 2022 presso la sede del Digilab della Sapienza Università di Roma. Gli Atti, curati da Julian Bogdani e Stefano Costa, comprendono 21 articoli che ben testimoniano il successo e la vitalità dell’iniziativa, nata nel 2006, cui si è più volte dato spazio nelle pagine della rivista. La seconda parte del volume, che raccoglie 14 contributi, è stata curata da Carlo Citter e Agostino Sotgia ed è dedicata agli Atti della Sessione speciale “Modelling the Landscape. From Prediction to Postdiction” della settima edizione della Landscape Archaeology Conference (Iași, Romania 10-15 September 2022). Si tratta di un tema dedicato all’uso dei modelli per lo studio dei paesaggi antichi, considerato sia attraverso l’approccio predittivo “tradizionale”, perché in uso dagli anni Novanta, sia attraverso quello postdittivo, che i curatori definiscono più “sperimentale”.

This book collects contributions which showcase the impact of new augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies considered jointly in the fields of cultural heritage and innovative design. AR is an alternative path of analysis and communication if applied to several fields of research, in particular if related to space and artifacts in it. This happens because the neural network development strengthens the relationship between augmented reality and artificial intelligence, creating processes close to human thought in shorter times. In the last years, the AR/AI expansion and the future scenarios have raised a deep trans-disciplinary speculation. The disciplines of representation (drawing, surveying, visual communication), as a convergence place of multidisciplinary theoretical and applicative studies related to architecture, city, environment, tangible and intangible cultural heritage, are called to contribute to the international debate. The book chapters deal with augmented reality and artificial intelligence, analyzing their connections as research tools for knowing the environment. In particular, the topics focus on the intersection between real and virtual world and on the heuristic role of drawing in the enhancement and management of cultural heritage, in planning and monitoring the architecture, the environment, or the infrastructures. Scientists involved in AR and AI research applied separately or together in the field of cultural heritage, architectural design, urban planning, and infrastructures analysis, as well as members of public and private organizations make up interdisciplinary groups that fuel the discussion focusing on the priorities and aims of the research related to the disciplines of representation.

Reperti e contesti archeologici costituiscono archivi complessi, che conservano la registrazione delle vicende personali, delle abitudini, dei modi di essere, di fare e di pensare delle donne e degli uomini che sono venuti prima di noi, oltre che delle caratteristiche del mondo in cui vivevano. Queste informazioni, cristallizzate nella materia, possono essere rilette e decodificate con gli strumenti dell’archeologia e, per lo più, offrono interessanti opportunità di sviluppo culturale – e talvolta anche economico – per le comunità e per i territori in cui si trovano. Perché le comunità possano riappropriarsi di questi beni e della loro storia, conferendo loro un valore all’interno dei propri processi relazionali, è necessaria un’operazione di mediazione che consenta di comunicarne i contenuti, riproponendoli in linguaggi comuni e accessibili. Da questo punto di vista, la comunicazione in archeologia costituisce una necessità, oltre che un imperativo etico, e rappresenta un passaggio ineludibile nel processo di valorizzazione, cioè di conferimento di valore ai beni culturali. La comunicazione può seguire oggi vie diverse e molto varie, che sono state notevolmente implementate a seguito della grande emergenza sanitaria dovuta al COVID-19 e che sono in continua e rapidissima evoluzione.
