Nel 2014 sono trascorsi i quaranta anni dalla fondazione della rivista Archeologia Medievale. Considerando la velocità con la quale la disciplina si è sviluppata nel nostro Paese, il tempo intercorso si può ritenere sufficientemente lungo per un bilancio. Scopo di questo volume miscellaneo, dunque, è stato quello di tracciare criticamente una storia dell’archeologia medievale in Italia attraverso la lente di ingrandimento della rivista, che ne è stata, al tempo stesso, rappresentazione e fonte di indirizzo. Ad una serie di contributi di archeologi italiani, a cui è stato chiesto il compito di discutere una serie di tematismi che la disciplina ha sviluppato in questi anni e di analizzare i rapporti dell’archeologia medievale con altri settori della ricerca scientifica, si affiancano le riflessioni critiche di alcuni colleghi stranieri che, nel tempo, hanno avuto una lunga frequentazione con la rivista.

This lavishly illustrated book looks at the art and architecture of episcopal palaces as expressions of power and ideology. Tracing the history of the bishop's residence in the urban centers of northern Italy over the Middle Ages, Maureen C. Miller asks why this once rudimentary and highly fortified structure called a domus became a complex and elegant "palace" (palatium) by the late twelfth century. Miller argues that the change reflects both the emergence of a distinct clerical culture and the attempts of bishops to maintain authority in public life. She relates both to the Gregorian reform movement, which set new standards for clerical deportment and at the same time undercut episcopal claims to secular power. As bishops lost temporal authority in their cities to emerging communal governments, they compensated architecturally and competed with the communes for visual and spatial dominance in the urban center. This rivalry left indelible marks on the layout and character of Italian cities.Moreover, Miller contends, this struggle for power had highly significant, but mixed, results for western Christianity. On the one hand, as bishops lost direct governing authority in their cities, they devised ways to retain status, influence, and power through cultural practices. This response to loss was highly creative. On the other hand, their loss of secular control led bishops to emphasize their spiritual powers and to use them to obtain temporal ends. The coercive use of spiritual authority contributed to the emergence of a "persecuting society" in the central Middle Ages.

Erano anni di profondi cambiamenti della società italiana, come di quella inglese, quando dal 1969 il giovane Hugo approdò in Italia per una tesi di dottorato sulla ceramica medievale nell’Italia centro-settentrionale, una ricerca che lo portò a entrare subito in rapporto con i maggiori studiosi del tempo di archeologia e di ceramica medievale, come David Whitehouse, Michelangelo Cagiano de Azevedo, Tiziano Mannoni, Ezio e Liana Tongiorgi, Ottone d’Assia, John Ward Perkins, Galeazzo Cora, John Mallet, Riccardo Francovich, Sergio Nepoti, Lanfredo Castelletti e molti altri. Molti altri fondamentali contatti Hugo poté stabilire grazie a Tiziano Mannoni, che lo portò ai Convegni Internazionali della Ceramica di Albisola dal 1970, in un ambiente centrale, fondativo per l’archeologia medievale italiana e per il riconoscimento del valore storiografico dei reperti ceramici da contesti archeologici, una sede in cui lo stesso Hugo promosse l’idea della costruzione di una rete internazionale per l’archeologia medievale e di uno strumento d’informazione, concretizzatosi nel “Notiziario di Archeologia Medievale” (meglio conosciuto come NAM). Fu questa rete di relazioni la base che costituì un punto di svolta per un riordino dei contenuti e una premessa, in prospettiva, per la stessa istituzionalizzazione della Disciplina. Così, il volume rappresenta una riflessione ‘indiretta’ su una precisa stagione storica della nostra cultura archeologica, forse ancora in parte inespressa. Una stagione di movimenti, ‘naturalmente’ internazionale, anche con strutture istituzionali di riferimento, ma con l’iniziativa personale e collettiva come valore centrale. La seconda parte del volume è dedicata al settore che qualifica e rappresenta decenni di ricerche di Hugo Blake, appunto ‘la ceramica’. Così, ad esempio, i saggi coprono un arco cronologico esteso fino a essere ricompresi nella periodizzazione primaria che si attribuì la Rivista di riferimento nazionale del settore, “Archeologia Medievale”: ‘postclassico-preindustriale’. In tale ambito, con un apporto determinante degli studi di Blake, fu anche ‘prodotta’ una vera e propria nuova fonte, tramite una radicale reimpostazione degli studi sui bacini ceramici che decorano chiese e edifici civili – in particolare fra i secc. X-XV – sulla base di contestualizzazioni di cui gli apparati murari monumentali, di cui erano parte, costituiscono la principale ma non unica ‘associazione’.

Gli Atti che qui si presentano raccolgono relazioni svolte in due congressi, e precisamente la III Conferenza Italiana di Archeologia Medievale, svoltasi nell’Università di Cassino dal 17 al 19 dicembre 2003 sul tema ‘L’archeologia medievale in Italia nell’ultimo trentennio: un bilancio’, e il VI Congresso di Archeologia Medievale, svoltosi a Roma nella sede del CNR il 31 maggio e il I giugno 2006 sul tema ‘Archeologia Medievale nell’Italia centro-meridionale: insediamenti e territorio’. La maggior parte dei contributi si rivolge all’archeologia del paesaggio medievale nell’Italia centrale e meridionale, comprese le due isole maggiori. Vi si trovano messi a confronto i risultati delle più recenti ricerche topografiche sia ad ampio raggio che su singole realtà territoriali, offrendo così sia bilanci regionali (Abruzzo, Molise, Sicilia), che analisi su aree circoscritte, che tuttavia prospettano problematiche importanti, perché immettono nella discussione dati inediti derivanti da ricerche ancora in corso. I principali settori d’indagine che si riflettono in questi Atti sono l’archeologia urbana (presente con saggi su Benevento, L’Aquila e Siponto), l’incastellamento (si va dal Lazio al Molise, dalla Sardegna alla Sicilia), l’insediamento monastico (in Toscana e nel Lazio), la viabilità e la carta archeologica. Alcuni saggi affrontano i problemi di continuità e di innovazione della rete viaria tra tarda antichità e medioevo dalla Toscana al Molise e alla Sicilia; in particolare un corposo saggio si riferisce alla viabilità medievale del contado fiorentino e alle sue infrastrutture.
