The nEU-Med project is part of the Horizon 2020 programme, in the ERC Advanced project category. It began in October 2015 and will be concluded in October 2020. The University of Siena is the host institution of the project. The project is focussed upon two Tuscan riverine corridors leading from the Gulf of Follonica in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Colline Metallifere. It aims to document and analyze the form and timeframe of economic growth in this part of the Mediterranean, which took place between the 7th and the 12thc. Central to this is an understanding of the processes of change in human settlements, in the natural and farming landscapes in relation to the exploitation of resources, and in the implementation of differing political strategies. This volume brings together the research presented at the first nEUMed workshop, held in Siena on 11-12 April, 2017. The aim of the workshop was to draw up an initial survey of research and related work on the project, one and a half years after its inception. The project is composed of several research units. Each unit covers an aspect of the interdisciplinary research underpinning the nEU-Med project, each with their own methodology. For this first volume of results, it was decided not to give an account of all the work carried out within all the units, but to select those lines of investigation which, at the end of the first year and a half, have made it possible to articulate and develop an interdisciplinary research strategy.

Il dibattito sull’incastellamento ha compiuto 50 anni. I castelli, osservati dall’alto, paiono un corpo unico che nacque per modificare l’habitat: una grande rivoluzione attuata tra X e XIII secolo, ma non fu così. Ogni castello è frutto di dinamiche proprie e può non trovarsi in relazione con il suo vicino più prossimo. L’incastellamento non fece muovere tutte le forze in campo all’unisono e fu caratterizzato da un mosaico di motivazioni che impattarono, spesso, su scala micro-territoriale, senza poter essere incasellate rigidamente. Una base comune è evidente: aumentare la protezione. Le differenze stanno nell’oggetto che andava protetto. Un castello a difesa di un valico ha una ragione d’essere ben diversa da un castello realizzato a difesa di un sito di stoccaggio di prodotti fondiari (con relativo abitato). Quelle “ragioni di essere” si traducono nella materialità dei rinvenimenti archeologici, che in Europa caratterizzano un mosaico di situazioni che non possono essere incasellate rigidamente, come spesso è stato fatto. Questo volume propone esempi e linee di tendenza sulla nascita dei castelli in Adriatico, dall’Istria alla Puglia, frutto di ricerche archeologiche e topografiche che concorrono ad approfondire il dibattito internazionale sull’incastellamento attraverso nuovi dati sviluppati in un’ottica più traversale e meno dicotomica di quanto si sia postulato in passato.

L’incastellamento verificatosi durante il periodo normanno ha profondamente segnato l’Abruzzo aquilano, provocando un sostanziale riassetto dell’organizzazione territoriale precedente, contraddistinta da un numero limitato di fortificazioni. La ricerca archeologica, in questo caso, diviene uno strumento cruciale per comprendere fino in fondo le dinamiche e l’evoluzione nel tempo di questo fenomeno, in un’area troppo spesso considerata liminare sia in senso geografico che politico. In questo peculiare periodo storico il territorio vide la nascita di nuovi insediamenti fortificati, sulla base di modelli normanni già sperimentati con successo in altre aree di confine. Questa ipotesi trova forza e conferme nella prassi operativa normanna che prevedeva la realizzazione in aree di frontiera di un particolare modello insediativo, la motte and bailey, considerato il più funzionale per il controllo e l’amministrazione dei nuovi possessi, nonché una chiara affermazione dell’identità e del potere dei nuovi conquistatori. La presenza di una collina artificiale, o di qualsiasi altra istallazione riferibile a essa, motta o éperon aménagé risulta superflua in territori accidentati e ricchi di rilievi naturali come l’Italia Meridionale, e si può dunque ragionevolmente spiegare solo con la radicata abitudine a un “modello insediativo” importato direttamente dalla Normandia, un’ipotetica tipologia di “castello matrice”. La vastità delle testimonianze presenti nel territorio che ancora non sono state fatte oggetto di puntuali e mirate indagini conferma come l’Abruzzo attenda tuttora un’attenzione che, almeno sul piano della ricerca archeologica, con alcune lodevoli eccezioni, gli è stata troppo a lungo negata.

Questo lavoro riassume e presenta i risultati di tre anni di ricerche condotte nei territori dell’Appenino tosco-emiliano, con particolare attenzione per le zone comprese entro i limiti della provincia di Reggio Emilia. L’oggetto principale dell’indagine sono le architetture domestiche medievali, tanto quelle ancora conservate in elevato quanto quelle emerse nel corso delle campagne di scavo archeologico, da quelle più risalenti nel tempo fino alla svolta tardomedievale. L’attenzione è stata rivolta non solo a uno studio tipologico dei modelli architettonici e alla loro evoluzione, ma anche alla comprensione del potenziale bacino di informazioni che questo particolare tipo di fonte rappresenta per la storia sociale, economica, insediativa e culturale del territorio. Si tratta in sostanza di uno studio di archeologia dell’architettura che non intende limitarsi ai temi classici, bensì si propone come punto di incontro tra l’analisi degli alzati e l’archeologia del paesaggio. Attraverso lo studio intrecciato tra testimonianze archeologiche e fonti scritte si sono messe in luce alcune peculiarità insediative proprie dell’Appennino reggiano, derivanti dagli eventi che hanno plasmato le comunità umane che lo hanno abitato nel corso dei secoli medievali. L’estensione dei metodi propri dell’archeologia degli alzati, già abbondantemente impiegati nello studio di chiese e castelli, alle strutture cosiddette “minori” del paesaggio architettonico ha consentito di comprendere con maggiore chiarezza le relazioni e le strutture sociali che si vennero a determinare, di volta in volta, a fronte dei mutamenti degli assetti politici del territorio.

This volume explores new definitions of state power in Al-Andalus throughout the Middle Ages by examining the interactions of the Andalusian state with its Islamic society, looking at specific moments in Andalusian history in a variety of local, geographical contexts. The essays collected here adopt largely archaeological methodologies, considering in turn the various spaces reclaimed by the state and its material remains, as well as the footprints of state impact on other local and territorial organizational structures. In addition, these means of analysis directly highlight those spaces that remained outside of state control, while also supporting consideration of how and why they managed to do so. The essays use the territorial dimension of the kinship-state dichotomy as a starting point for considering its means of operation and evolution over time. Beginning with the traditional assumption that territorial configuration patterns are heavily determined by the relative weight of the different authorities operating in a given territory, the essays identify the different agents operating in Al-Andalus (mainly the state and gentry-based peasant communities) through insightful archaeological and historical considerations of medieval Andalusian society's material remains. With special attention also paid to the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada--the Andalusian territory lasting longest under Muslim rule--this collection makes an important contribution to larger historiographical debates surrounding the medieval Islamic world.

Space has always played a crucial part in defining the place that monks and nuns occupy in the world. Even during the first centuries of the monastic phenomenon, when the possible varieties of monastic practice were nearly infinite, there was a common thread in the need to differentiate the monk from the rest: whatever else they were supposed to be, monks were beings apart, unique, in some sense separate from the mainstream. The physical contours of monastic topographies, natural and constructed, are thus fundamental to an understanding of how early monks went about defining the parameters of their everyday lives, their modes of religious observance, and their interactions with the larger world around them.
