Al tema della Ceramica Altomedievale in Italia è dedicato il V Congresso di Archeologia Medievale, che si è svolto – come i precedenti – a Roma nella sede del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche nei giorni 26 e 27 Novembre 2001 e del quale il presente volume raccoglie gli Atti, costituiti da 23 contributi di alta qualità scientifica. Il congresso si è proposto di presentare dei bilanci regionali di sintesi e degli aggiornamenti puntuali sulle ceramiche in uso in Italia nell’altomedievo e specificamente nel periodo compreso tra l’VIII e l’XI secolo, da un lato quindi escludendo gli estremi esiti tardoantichi di VI-VII secolo e dall’altro arrestandosi al momento in cui appaiono quelle innovazioni tecniche che aprono una nuova epoca nella storia della ceramica italiana. Se ne è ricavato un primo sguardo globale sull’argomento, un originale panorama della situazione degli studi, basato su rigorosi scavi stratigrafici, classificazioni accurate e raffinate analisi archeometriche dei materiali, e attento alla totalità dei tipi ceramici presenti nei diversi contesti e periodi. Pur tra tante differenze, sono emerse alcune realtà consolidate e alcune linee di tendenza convergenti.

This volume represents the third edition of a work cycle that started in 2006 for my PhD thesis. The thesis was presented in 2010 (first edition, Gattiglia 2010), partially published as a summary monograph in 2011 (second edition, Gattiglia 2011) or in articles (Gattiglia 2012, Gattiglia 2012a, Gattiglia 2011a), and now (third edition) takes the form of a more comprehensive publication in the light of new data. Over the past two years, the work study on Pisa, not only relating to the Middle Ages, continued within the MAPPA (Metodologie Applicate alla Predittività del Potenziale – Methodologies Applied to Archaeological Potential Predictivity) project, allowing a widespread collection of data thanks to which it was possible to explain more fully the hydro-geological, geomorphological and topographic context and to check (and in many cases change) part of the assumptions made.

Attraverso i risultati dell’indagine archeologica condotta dalla Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici dell’Emilia Romgna in occasione dei lavori di restauro e ristrutturazione viene ricostruita la storia del Monastero di S. Antonio in Polesine, uno dei complessi monastici più antichi di Ferrara e l’unico con contin ità di vita dal medioevo fino ai nostri giorni. Il risultato complessivo, esito assai riuscito di uno sforzo organizzativo e scientifico condotto in maniera egregia da Chiara Guarnieri, è un affresco composito in cui l’analisi tradizionale dei reperti e dei contesti di scavo, compito primario dell’archeologia, si sposa con il loro inserimento nel contesto storico e monumentale del complesso monastico, in un arco cronologico che va dal XIV al XVIII secolo.

Gli Atti che qui si presentano raccolgono relazioni svolte in due congressi, e precisamente la III Conferenza Italiana di Archeologia Medievale, svoltasi nell’Università di Cassino dal 17 al 19 dicembre 2003 sul tema ‘L’archeologia medievale in Italia nell’ultimo trentennio: un bilancio’, e il VI Congresso di Archeologia Medievale, svoltosi a Roma nella sede del CNR il 31 maggio e il I giugno 2006 sul tema ‘Archeologia Medievale nell’Italia centro-meridionale: insediamenti e territorio’. La maggior parte dei contributi si rivolge all’archeologia del paesaggio medievale nell’Italia centrale e meridionale, comprese le due isole maggiori. Vi si trovano messi a confronto i risultati delle più recenti ricerche topografiche sia ad ampio raggio che su singole realtà territoriali, offrendo così sia bilanci regionali (Abruzzo, Molise, Sicilia), che analisi su aree circoscritte, che tuttavia prospettano problematiche importanti, perché immettono nella discussione dati inediti derivanti da ricerche ancora in corso. I principali settori d’indagine che si riflettono in questi Atti sono l’archeologia urbana (presente con saggi su Benevento, L’Aquila e Siponto), l’incastellamento (si va dal Lazio al Molise, dalla Sardegna alla Sicilia), l’insediamento monastico (in Toscana e nel Lazio), la viabilità e la carta archeologica. Alcuni saggi affrontano i problemi di continuità e di innovazione della rete viaria tra tarda antichità e medioevo dalla Toscana al Molise e alla Sicilia; in particolare un corposo saggio si riferisce alla viabilità medievale del contado fiorentino e alle sue infrastrutture.
