In questo numero la sezione Saggi accoglie quattro contributi, il primo dei quali presenta un approfondito studio archeologico sul periodo altomedievale della laguna di Venezia attraverso lo scavo di San Lorenzo di Ammiana; un secondo invece rappresenta una sintesi delle ricerche archeologiche alla villa romana di Villamagna (FR). La sezione è arricchita da due saggi di carattere scientifico: uno sulla paleodieta e le società rurali dei Paesi Baschi e un ultimo offre una sintesi della ricerca archeozoologica dell’Impero Bizantino. La rivista contiene la consueta sezione di Notizie scavi e lavori sul campo, divisa a sua volta in ricerche svolte in Italia e nel Bacino del Mediterraneo e la sezione Note e Discussioni, dove sono presentati studi su altre zone d’Europa (Creta, Penisola Iberica). This book offers a comprehensive overview of the early modern military history of Portugal and its possessions in Africa, the Americas, and Asia from the perspective of the military revolution historiographical debate. The existence of a military revolution in the early modern period has been much debated in international historiography, and this volume fills a significant gap in its relation to the history of Portugal and its overseas empire. It examines different forms of military change in specifically Portuguese case studies but also adopts a global perspective through the analysis of different contexts and episodes in Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Contributors explore whether there is evidence of what could be defined as aspects of a military revolution or whether other explanatory models are needed to account for different forms of military change. In this way, it offers the reader a variety of perspectives that contribute to the debate over the applicability of the military revolution concept to Portugal and its empire during the early modern period. Broken down into four thematic parts and broad in both chronological and geographical scope, the book deepens our understanding of the art of warfare in Portugal and its empire and demonstrates how the military revolution debate can be used to examine military change in a global perspective. Nei tempi di Federico II emergono le nuove figure dei conti Riccardo Fallucca e Anselmo de Justingen e si profila quella del capostipite della famiglia Ruffo: Pietro de Calabria.

Il libro è la storia dell'isola di ieri e soprattutto della relazione tra i suoi spazi, i suoi abitanti, gli edifici che hanno occupato ed i loro oggetti quotidiani, dal basso medioevo ad oggi. San Giacomo in Paludo è un'isola della laguna nord di Venezia, oggi disabitata, ma che a partire dal XIII secolo ha ospitato prima una comunità di monache cistercensi, poi un priorato francescano ed infine alcuni presidi militari. La prima parte del libro racconta le ricerche archeologiche e storiche: la descrizione generale degli spazi occupati e delle singole aree scavate è seguita dalla discussione su specifiche tipologie di dati quali ceramica, resti umani, fauna e fonti storiche. La seconda parte del lavoro cerca di comprendere il significato di questo luogo nel corso dei diversi momenti storici attraverso il punto di vista degli abitanti e quello di più ampio respiro della laguna. Il tema principale della ricerca sono le comunità che vi hanno abitato e i loro resti materiali. Le tre principali variabili utilizzate per la loro carattterizzazione sono state l'uso dello spazio, le relazioni con l'area esterna all'isola e, infine, il trattamento dei rifiuti. In passato il sito è sempre stato uno specchio del rapporto tra Venezia e la sua laguna. Quale sarà l'isola di domani?

The nEU-Med project is part of the Horizon 2020 programme, in the ERC Advanced project category. It began in October 2015 and will be concluded in October 2020. The University of Siena is the host institution of the project. The project is focussed upon two Tuscan riverine corridors leading from the Gulf of Follonica in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Colline Metallifere. It aims to document and analyze the form and timeframe of economic growth in this part of the Mediterranean, which took place between the 7th and the 12thc. Central to this is an understanding of the processes of change in human settlements, in the natural and farming landscapes in relation to the exploitation of resources, and in the implementation of differing political strategies. This volume brings together the research presented at the first nEUMed workshop, held in Siena on 11-12 April, 2017. The aim of the workshop was to draw up an initial survey of research and related work on the project, one and a half years after its inception. The project is composed of several research units. Each unit covers an aspect of the interdisciplinary research underpinning the nEU-Med project, each with their own methodology. For this first volume of results, it was decided not to give an account of all the work carried out within all the units, but to select those lines of investigation which, at the end of the first year and a half, have made it possible to articulate and develop an interdisciplinary research strategy.
