In questo numero la sezione Saggi accoglie quattro contributi, il primo dei quali presenta un approfondito studio archeologico sul periodo altomedievale della laguna di Venezia attraverso lo scavo di San Lorenzo di Ammiana; un secondo invece rappresenta una sintesi delle ricerche archeologiche alla villa romana di Villamagna (FR). La sezione è arricchita da due saggi di carattere scientifico: uno sulla paleodieta e le società rurali dei Paesi Baschi e un ultimo offre una sintesi della ricerca archeozoologica dell’Impero Bizantino. La rivista contiene la consueta sezione di Notizie scavi e lavori sul campo, divisa a sua volta in ricerche svolte in Italia e nel Bacino del Mediterraneo e la sezione Note e Discussioni, dove sono presentati studi su altre zone d’Europa (Creta, Penisola Iberica). Il volume si conclude con una serie di recensioni di volumi pubblicati nel corso del 2011 e 2012 e con un ricordo del prof. David Whitehouse.

Bringing together essays from experts in a variety of disciplines, this collection explores two of the most important facets of life within the medieval Europe: money and the church. By focusing on the interactions between these subjects, the volume addresses four key themes. Firstly it offers new perspectives on the role of churchmen in providing conceptual frameworks, from outright condemnation, to sophisticated economic theory, for the use and purpose of money within medieval society. Secondly it discusses the dichotomy of money for the church and its officers: on one hand voices emphasise the moral difficulties in engaging with money, on the other the reality of the ubiquitous use of money in the church at all levels and in places within Christendom. Thirdly it places in dialogue interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches, and evidence from philosophy, history, literature and material culture, to the issues of money and church. Lastly, the volume provides new perspectives on the role of the church in the process of monetization in the High Middle Ages. Concentrating on northern Europe, from the early eleventh century to the beginning of the thirteenth century, the collection is able to explore the profound changes in the use of money and the rise of a money-economy that this period and region witnessed. By adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, the collection challenges current understanding of how money was perceived, understood and used by medieval clergy in a range of different contexts. Il volume correda un breve percorso espositivo a pannelli (testi e immagini) per presentare i risultati delle ricerche e degli scavi svolti dal 2011 ad oggi nel sito archeologico ‘Antiche Mura’ di Jesolo. ‘In limine’ è una poesia di Eugenio Montale (introduce la raccolta “Ossi di Seppia”). Il titolo, e la poesia stessa, sono sembrati pertinenti a sintetizzare il senso del progetto archeologico sull’antica Equilo, di cui si pubblicano in questo volume i primi risultati. ‘In limine’ significa ‘sulla soglia’: indica cioè un punto di passaggio, un confine; e, nel nostro caso, metaforicamente rimarca il discrimine tra passato e presente, il luogo archeologico dove la materia inerte diviene narrazione. Qui, in limine, è anche uno spazio fisico preciso, quello dell’area delle ‘Antiche Mura’, luogo anche tangibile della memoria collettiva. Un luogo, ieri come oggi, ai margini. Se l’antica Equilo era stato un insediamento sul confine instabile tra mare e laguna, la moderna Jesolo, che ne ha ereditato il nome, ha lasciato che i ruderi della sua memoria restassero al di fuori del centro abitato: nel punto dove la città diventa campagna, lì sorgono le rovine dell’antica cattedrale, lì rimane il reliquiario della comunità, come una sorta di giardino ‘dove affonda un morto viluppo di memorie’ (di nuovo Montale). Gli archeologi hanno cercato nel tempo di recuperare quelle memorie e quel passato, con pazienza e fatica. Così, il progetto nato qualche anno fa per iniziativa del Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell’Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, non costituisce che l’ultimo atto di un percorso che ha inizio dalla metà del secolo scorso, con gli scavi nell’area della cattedrale e nel vicino sito della chiesa di San Mauro. I contributi che si pubblicano in questa circostanza raccontano e sintetizzano i risultati degli ultimi anni di scavi. L’interconnessione tra le varie strategie di indagine ci ha consentito di proporre una ricostruzione storico-insediativa del sito del tutto inedita e sorprendente.

The nEU-Med project is part of the Horizon 2020 programme, in the ERC Advanced project category. It began in October 2015 and the University of Siena is the host institution of the project. The project is focussed upon two Tuscan riverine corridors leading from the Gulf of Follonica in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Colline Metallifere. It aims to document and analyze the form and timeframe of economic growth in this part of the Mediterranean, which took place between the 7th and the 12thc. Central to this is an understanding of the processes of change in human settlements, in the natural and farming landscapes in relation to the exploitation of resources, and in the implementation of differing political strategies. This volume presents the multi-disciplinary research focussed upon the key site of the project, Vetricella, and its territory. Vetricella is thought to be the site of Valli, a royal property in the Tuscan march. It is the only Early Medieval property to be extensively studied in Italy. Located on Italy’s Tyrrhenian coast, the archaeology and history of this site provide new insights on estate management, metal production and wider Mediterranean relations in the later first millennium. Apart from reports on the archaeology, the finds from excavations and environmental studies, three essays consider the wider European historical and archaeological context of Vetricella. Future monographs will feature studies by members of the project team on aspects of Vetricella, its finds and territory.

Il presente libro racconta, attraverso diversi approcci, l’evoluzione delle economie di mercato e di sussistenza della Provincia di Siena, concentrando l’attenzione in particolare nel corso del I millennio dopo Cristo, ma che prosegue per alcuni aspetti anche al Basso Medioevo e all’Età Moderna. Lo studio è basato sui sistemi insediativi, dall’Età Romana all’Alto Medioevo, che hanno interessato il territorio provinciale, con particolare riferimento all’applicazione del cosiddetto Modello Toscano; sul ruolo delle arterie stradali terrestri e delle idrovie e sulla loro evoluzione nella suddetta cronologia; sui sistemi commerciali e produttivi della ceramica, adottando una analisi dei networks; sui modi, le pratiche e le tecniche agricole altomedievali nella val di Merse; sullo sfruttamento del suolo in alcuni contesti campione dall’entroterra alla costa; sul flusso di greggi e di uomini dagli appennini alle aree pianeggianti e climaticamente miti della provincia di Grosseto. L’approccio multi scalare basato su fonti diversificate è il collante del presente studio, che ha come obiettivo la costruzione di un modello di economie integrate su un territorio, come la Provincia di Siena, caratterizzato da dinamiche complesse ma dotato di un “alto tasso di Ricerca Archeologica”.
