The nEU-Med project is part of the Horizon 2020 programme, in the ERC Advanced project category. It began in October 2015 and the University of Siena is the host institution of the project. The project is focussed upon two Tuscan riverine corridors leading from the Gulf of Follonica in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Colline Metallifere. It aims to document and analyze the form and timeframe of economic growth in this part of the Mediterranean, which took place between the 7th and the 12thc. Central to this is an understanding of the processes of change in human settlements, in the natural and farming landscapes in relation to the exploitation of resources, and in the implementation of differing political strategies. This volume presents the multi-disciplinary research focussed upon the key site of the project, Vetricella, and its territory. Vetricella is thought to be the site of Valli, a royal property in the Tuscan march. It is the only Early Medieval property to be extensively studied in Italy. Located on Italy’s Tyrrhenian coast, the archaeology and history of this site provide new insights on estate management, metal production and wider Mediterranean relations in the later first millennium. Apart from reports on the archaeology, the finds from excavations and environmental studies, three essays consider the wider European historical and archaeological context of Vetricella. Future monographs will feature studies by members of the project team on aspects of Vetricella, its finds and territory.

New insights into the history of Islamic glassmaking The ancient glass industry changed dramatically towards the end of the first millennium. The Roman glassmaking tradition of mineral soda glass was increasingly supplanted by the use of plant ash as the main fluxing agent at the turn of the ninth century CE. Defining primary production groups of plant ash glass has been a challenge due to the high variability of raw materials and the smaller scale of production. Islamic Glass in the Making advocates a large-scale archaeometric approach to the history of Islamic glassmaking to trace the developments in the production, trade and consumption of vitreous materials between the eighth and twelfth centuries and to separate the norm from the exception. It proposes compositional discriminants to distinguish regional production groups, and provides insights into the organisation of the glass industry and commerce during the early Islamic period. The interdisciplinary approach leads to a holistic understanding of the development of Islamic glass; assemblages from the early Islamic period in Mesopotamia, Central Asia, Egypt, Greater Syria and Iberia are evaluated, and placed in the larger geopolitical context. In doing so, this book fills a gap in the present literature and advances a large-scale approach to the history of Islamic glass.

An examination of coined money and its significance to rulers, aristocrats and peasants in early medieval Europe Between the end of the Roman Empire in the fifth century and the economic transformations of the twelfth, coined money in western Europe was scarce and high in value, difficult for the majority of the population to make use of. And yet, as Rory Naismith shows in this illuminating study, coined money was made and used throughout early medieval Europe. It was, he argues, a powerful tool for articulating people’s place in economic and social structures and an important gauge for levels of economic complexity. Working from the premise that using coined money carried special significance when there was less of it around, Naismith uses detailed case studies from the Mediterranean and northern Europe to propose a new reading of early medieval money as a point of contact between economic, social, and institutional history. Naismith examines structural issues, including the mining and circulation of metal and the use of bullion and other commodities as money, and then offers a chronological account of monetary development, discussing the post-Roman period of gold coinage, the rise of the silver penny in the seventh century and the reconfiguration of elite power in relation to coinage in the tenth and eleventh centuries. In the process, he counters the conventional view of early medieval currency as the domain only of elite gift-givers and intrepid long-distance traders. Even when there were few coins in circulation, Naismith argues, the ways they were used—to give gifts, to pay rents, to spend at markets—have much to tell us.

Dieci anni fa si celebrava il Quarantennale della Rivista con un numero speciale, un’occasione di riflessione su quanto si era fatto e su come la disciplina si era sviluppata, il tutto visto attraverso la storia di un periodico che ne aveva accompagnato il percorso fin dai primi passi. Il volume affrontava criticamente alcuni tematismi che, in un approccio essenzialmente di tipo storico-culturale, avevano attratto l’interesse dei ricercatori nel nostro Paese e, nel contempo, tentava possibili collegamenti con gli sviluppi dell’archeologia italiana ed europea, cogliendone criticità e punti di forza. Un volume che dunque era un bilancio sul passato, ma anche un possibile ponte verso il futuro. Dopo un decennio, in occasione dei Cinquanta anni della Rivista (gli anniversari restano numeri se non si coglie l’opportunità, che offrono, di un avanzamento critico), la Rivista pubblica un monografico dedicato al rapporto tra l’archeologia medievale e le “scienze dure”, dunque lo fa inserendosi in uno spazio che, forse più di altri, ha segnato in forme innovative la base epistemologica delle nostre ricerche. Ma non si tratta di un’eccezione, perché la Rivista, negli ultimi dieci anni, ha spesso promosso e pubblicato numeri monografici che hanno variamente intercettato e sviluppato temi di attualità: da quelli molto settoriali ma che affrontavano le potenzialità di nuove fonti (ad esempio il numero sulle anfore altomedievali); ad altri più vicini al mainstream storico ma letto attraverso una nuova lente archeologica (il numero sulla congiuntura del Trecento); ad altri, ancora, che tentavano un ripensamento del rapporto tra le archeologie post-antiche e il passato nelle loro più diverse declinazioni, inserendosi peraltro in un filone, oggi forse un po’ troppo alla moda, come quello dell’“archeologia pubblica” (pensiamo al numero su archeologia medievale ed identità). In sostanza, crediamo che la Rivista, oltre ad accogliere quanto di meglio le veniva offerto dalla ricerca nazionale, abbia saputo individuare e sviluppare percorsi autonomi e per certi versi originali, di cogliere quanto di innovativo maturava nell’ambito delle archeologie internazionali e cercare di tradurlo in proposte che guardassero ad un’archeologia del futuro svincolata dalle pastoie in cui è ancora confinata buona parte della nostra tradizione nazionale. Archeologia Medievale, in tutti questi anni, ha mantenuto il suo titolo “tipicamente accademico” ma anche il sottotitolo (Cultura materiale. Insediamenti. Territorio) che, fin dagli inizi, marcava un chiaro spazio autonomo ed originale di ricerca in ambito archeologico. La temperie culturale in cui era nata, la prima metà degli anni ’70, spiega molto di quel titolo e di quegli orientamenti, ma se la rigidità di certe posizioni ideologiche si è nel tempo mitigata e l’archeologia sembra giustamente andare oltre i confini cronologici nei quali è ancora accademicamente inserita, quel sottotitolo, nell’indicare un metodo e uno specifico spazio d’azione, resta ancora pienamente d’attualità […]

L’opera è rivolta soprattutto a chi non ha avuto l’occasione di conoscere l’uomo e il ricercatore che, a nostro avviso, più di altri si è distinto, in Liguria e non solo, per costruire un’archeologia a tutto tondo. Non diciamo ‘globale’ perché, come lo stesso Mannoni sosteneva negli ultimi anni, il termine può dare un’idea sbagliata: di chi eccede in ambizione, non riconosce la complessità dei problemi storici, confonde la propria ricerca con il tutto.

Le anforette sono una categoria di reperti il cui nome rimanda al più diffuso contenitore da trasporto di epoca classica, l’anfora, ma differiscono da questa soprattutto per le ridotte dimensioni e per il breve-medio raggio di distribuzione. Già note nel panorama di studi sulle ceramiche medievali di uso comune dell’Italia centrale tirrenica, le anforette finora sono state rinvenute, sia attraverso indagini stratigrafiche che di superficie, in numeri piuttosto contenuti. Il sito di Vetricella (Scarlino, GR), invece, al centro del progetto ERC Advanced nEU-Med: Origins of a new economic union (7th-12th centuries): resources, landscapes and political strategies in a Mediterranean region, ne ha restituito un quantitativo assai considerevole. Il volume propone, oltre ad un aggiornamento dei rinvenimenti di anforette effettuati nel territorio compreso tra Toscana meridionale ed alto Lazio, uno studio approfondito di questi reperti secondo un approccio tanto tradizionale, quanto archeometrico. Grazie al progetto nEU-Med, infatti, è stato possibile svolgere analisi di provenienza, di datazione assoluta e degli eventuali residui organici dei contenuti originari. Allo stesso tempo, si è cercato di fornire anche un’idea del contesto ceramico generale in cui questi manufatti si inseriscono. I dati scaturiti dai vari aspetti della ricerca hanno consentito pertanto di incrementare il potenziale conoscitivo intrinseco delle anforette e di aggiungere importanti elementi per la ricostruzione delle dinamiche socio-economiche che caratterizzavano la Toscana sud-occidentale tra alto Medioevo e secoli centrali.

Oltre quaranta anni di ricerche nella Maremma toscana, uno dei territori meglio indagati archeologicamente a livello europeo; un progetto ERC-Advanced, nEU-Med, che ha consentito di rileggere vecchi dati e produrne di nuovi grazie ad un’intensa ricerca multidisciplinare; un tema, i beni pubblici, in questi anni al centro dell’interesse degli storici delle fonti documentarie, qui declinato attraverso il dato materiale. Sono queste le basi di partenza del volume, nel quale i risultati acquisiti dalla ricerca degli ultimi anni all’interno di un’area eletta a caso studio, sono stati innestati su quelli elaborati nei decenni precedenti, con l’obiettivo di individuare i markers materiali dei beni regi e capirne la loro formazione e gestione tra IX ed XI secolo. I risultati della ricerca interpretati in una nuova prospettiva concorrono ad individuare una possibile chiave di lettura delle realtà storiche di questa area toscana, capace di generare risposte agganciate a più ampie tematiche: il ruolo del publicum in rapporto alle aristocrazie e alle comunità locali; le trasformazioni dei paesaggi antropici e naturali; la peculiarità di produzioni e scambi; i tempi e i modi dell’incastellamento; la crescita economica delle campagne prima del grande balzo in avanti del XII secolo.
