This volume presents a rich collection of archival records on the Anabaptist movement in Friesland and Groningen in the second half of the sixteenth century, such as reports of interrogations, sentences, edicts, and letters of officials. New light is shed on the pattern in the repression of the Anabaptist movement which was entirely different in the two northern provinces. The merciless persecution in Friesland stands in opposition to the relative liberty of the Anabaptists in Groningen in that time. This carefully documented collection of sources was assembled by Professor A.F. Mellink. After his death in 1987 the manuscript was not ready for publication. Dr. S. Zijlstra completed and supplemented the annotation and transcribed and introduced a number of documents which were recently added to the collection. This book deals with the foundations of legal practice in Friesland in the 17th and 18th century, specially with the way in which the Court of Friesland made use of the texts of the ius commune in it's judgements. With the help of the until now unexploited archives of the Frisian Court a selection of civil cases and legal opinions has been made which will not only interest the legal historian but the modern lawyer as well. Legal problems about for example minority, assignment, encumbrances, liability, sale, tort etc. are explained and discussed.The practical solutions of the Court based on Roman law texts taken from the Justinian Corpus Iuris Civilis enlarge the knowledge of the reader and his comprehension of the dogmatic and historical aspects of each case. If possible a comparison with Roman-Dutch law is made and each chapter ends with a reference to modern Dutch laws, illustrating the 'eternity' of the legal problems dealt with. The book also makes clear why the Frisians considered themselves as most tenacious adherents of Roman Law: juris Romani tenacissimi. Convinced of themselves the Frisians members of the Court travelled along the 'pure' Roman highway while the jurists of other provinces and countries often had left the road and taken sidepaths. The book shows us that we in fairness may speak of an independent branch in the big tree of the ius commune: Roman-Frisian law.

Tot in de jaren 1960 stonden lage delen van Friesland 's winters regelmatig onder water. Het peil van de meren, plassen en vaarten die tezamen de provinciale waterberging vormen, Frieslands boezem, was nauwelijks te beheersen. Vele duizenden hectaren grond waren niet of door te lage kaden van deze boezem afgescheiden. Het provinciaal bestuur liet de problemen rond de waterbeheersing van oudsher grotendeels op hun beloop. Daarin kwam pas verandering toen in de jaren 1950 ruilverkavelingen aan de orde kwamen. De provinciale waterstaatsdienst stelde een samenhangende analyse van de waterhuishouding op. De Cultuurtechnische Dienst oefende voortdurende druk uit om tot maatregelen over te gaan. In een periode van ruim tien jaar, tussen 1960 en omstreeks 1970, kwamen drie noodzakelijke verbeteringen tot stand. Heel Friesland werd ingedeeld in waterschappen, er werd een tweede boezemgemaal gebouwd en de Lauwerszee werd afgesloten. Als gevolg daarvan was er rond 1970 eindelijk een sprake van een doelmatige waterbeheersing. Fries waterstaatsbestuur geeft voor het eerst een nauwkeurige reconstructie van de manier waarop in een periode van twee eeuwen Frieslands drooglegging tot stand gebracht werd.
