Although a few among us are intrepid architectural tourists, visiting buildings and landscapes our cameras at the ready, most of us experience architecture through the windshield of a moving vehicle, the architectural experience reduced to a blurry and momentary drive-by. And the rest of our architectural "tourism" is through the images of cameras, movies, and television programs -- that is, through the lens of another's eye. Architectural hisotrian Mitchell Schwarzer calls this new mediated architectural experience the "zoomscape." In this thought-provoking book, he argues that the perception of architecture has been fundamentally altered by the technologies of transportation and the camera -- we now look at buildings, neighborhoods, cities, and even entire continents as we ride in trains, cars, and planes, and/or as we view photographs, movies, and television. Zoomscape shows how we now perceive buildings and places at high speeds, across great distances, through edited and multiple reproductions. Nowadays, our views of the architectural landscape are modulated by the accelerator pedal and the remote control, by studio production techniques and airplane flight paths. Visualization is an important aspect of architectural design. This field has evolved and influenced continuously the design medium and process. Architecture implies experience of space and experience relies on motion. Presently, the visualization process offers minimal experiential feed-back as it lacks immersive and proprioceptive output. Recent technological leaps necessitate a re-evaluation of the architectural visualization process. Advancements in flight simulation and virtual reality applications can be implemented in new tools for architects. This thesis defines the parameters of a 3D, immersive design tool. The proposed tool provides feed-back beyond photo-realism, tapping into the experiential qualities of the designed spaces. The parameters of the proposed tool extend the boundaries of architectural visualization into experientialization. These alternatives investigate the use in architecture of digital 3D environments and space/time continuum. Modeling, manipulation, and navigation are analyzed and concrete original implementations are shown. A new method, similar to a 3D parallel ruler, is demonstrated to overcome constraints in representation, imposed by two-dimensional displays. Immersion and engagement are necessary for the simulation of a compelling architectural experience. An analysis of stimuli and determination of necessary levels of input is performed. For this, it is important to understand perception and environmental properties. In this thesis, a phenomenological approach to architectural experience analysis is employed. The practical application of the proposed tool is critical. Specific hardware and software analysis is performed to assure the feasibility of implementing such a tool.

Stretching back to antiquity, motion had been a key means of designing and describing the physical environment. But during the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries, individuals across Europe increasingly designed, experienced, and described a new world of motion: one characterized by continuous, rather than segmented, movement. New spaces that included vistas along house interiors and uninterrupted library reading rooms offered open expanses for shaping sequences of social behaviour, scientists observed how the Earth rotated around the sun, and philosophers attributed emotions to neural vibrations in the human brain. Early Modern Spaces in Motion examines this increased emphasis on motion with eight essays encompassing a geographical span of Portugal to German-speaking lands and a disciplinary range from architectural history to English. The experience of motion, while accessible to all mobile beings, is a sensation that is often overlooked. The type of movement being addressed is not that of crowds or circulation patterns (as is common), but specific movements of the body that compose deliberate actions. The current schools of thought towards specific motion in architecture fall into one of two categories; phenomenology or ergonomics. Phenomenology addresses the internal side of motion and thus tends towards the purely subjective. This method of addressing motion is widely undeveloped however, with a focus on sequencing over kinesthetics (the sensation of motion) themselves. The thesis aims to address this gap in our understanding and demonstrate how to use kinesthetics as a driver for design. In order to do this several questions must be explored: What kinds of motions can architecture design for? What internal responses can motion illicit? How can our kinesthetic experience of motion be used to develop a design methodology? In order to fully address these questions, the thesis is broken down into two consecutive parts. The first part is an analysis of kinesthetics and motion within architecture. The second part uses this data to create a design methodology that is demonstrated through the design of a fashion design studio.

This book examines how seventeenth-century English architectural theorists and designers rethought the domestic built environment in terms of mobility, as motion became a dominant mode of articulating the world across discourses encompassing philosophy, political theory, poetry, and geography. From mid-century, the house and estate that had evoked staccato rhythms became triggers for mental and physical motion - evoking travel beyond England's shores, displaying vistas, and showcasing changeable wall surfaces. Simultaneously, philosophers and other authors argued for the first time that, paradoxically, the blur of motion immobilised an inherently restless viewer into social predictability and so stability. Alternately feared and praised early in the century for its unsettling unpredictability, motion became the most certain way of comprehending social interactions, language, time, and the buildings that filtered human experience. At the heart of this narrative is the malleable sensory viewer, tacitly assumed in early modern architectural theory and history yet whose inescapable responsiveness to surrounding stimuli guaranteed a dependable world from the seventeenth century.
