This, the first monograph devoted to her firm's work, offers a beautifully illustrated tour through a selection of her most exceptional projects. AUTHOR: Simone Kosremelli was born in Beirut in 1950. She received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the School of Architecture and Design at the American University of Beirut (1974), graduating with distinction. Her Master's degree in urban planning from Columbia University in New York (1977) was supported by a Fulbright scholarship. After working briefly as a freelance planner, Ms. Kosremelli opened her own architecture office in Beirut in 1981 and a branch office in the United Arab Emirates in 1990. She is also a part-time faculty member of the American University of Beirut. Ms. Kosremelli's clients are people who respect their traditions and their environment. Her designs have been published in international and local books and journals, including 'Mimar' (no.41, Dec 1991) and 'The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture' (2002). Her designs can be found in Lebanon and the Gulf States. As the chapters of contemporary architecture in Lebanon remain unwritten, the last chapter of Part One analyzes the directions that frantic reconstruction has taken after the war of 1975-1990 in comparison with the earlier period, and constructs the framework for future examinations. In Part Two, a database of architects/engineers and buildings tries to make manifest the richness and variety of the architecture produced. It is based mainly on primary sources, data on buildings, drawings, interviews with architects and/or their collaborators, supplemented by secondary sources. By bringing to light the relatively recent past, this dissertation would construe a better understanding of modern architectural heritage. Finding Room in Beirut: Places of the Everyday demonstrates why it is worth our while to explore the value and contemporary meaning of urban areas about to undergo complete renewal. Branching off from discourses surrounding the terrain vague, the book argues that large populated urban areas meet the criteria of the vague and constitute a particular perspective from which to build a critical stance in regards to the contemporary city. But unlike a terrain vague, a vague urbain -- inhabited areas where property ownership is usually obscure and informal behaviours a daily affair -- possesses real communities and offers an alternative understanding on how a city can be practiced and how lessons should be learned before its complete transformation. Stemming from a photographic and architectural documentation of Bachoura, a central area of Beirut, Lebanon, the book shows how the vague urbain allows for different ways of inhabiting, ways that are as -- or perhaps even more -- real and anchored in the imagination of the city as those proposed by standardising developments. Building on the intricacies of found situations, improvised uses and local narratives, it is an exploration as to how the meeting of a marvellous realism with l'intrigue, the vague urbain, and temporary architecture can provide opportunities for the emergence of hidden narratives.
