How are building types such as skyscrapers, mosques or living history museums imported, adapted and contested in different societies? Our urban landscapes are reshaped by the global circulation of models drawn from elsewhere. This original collection examines how architectural ideas, social models and building forms circulate round the world and become adapted to local conditions.

Identity written by GRAFT and has been published by Birkhaüser this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-12 with Architecture categories.

The international and multidisciplinary practice GRAFT conceives of itself as a label for architecture, urban design, product design, and music. GRAFT calls itself a "hybrid office" and produces dynamic architectural designs for standard commissions; however, the architects also initiate their own projects and system solutions for tasks with a social, ecological, or esthetic emphasis. The book presents buildings by GRAFT in the fields of culture, offices, brand architecture, retail, and mobility. It contains about forty generously illustrated projects that document a wide range of work in which the respective corporate culture is incorporated in GRAFT's sophisticated architectural language. Dialectic essays focus on the practice's key themes, such as the debate on urban identity or mobility transition.

Winy Maas proposed a provocative and inspiring brief; he asked participants to redesign the cities of Rotterdam and New York in a way that everything is reachable within five minutes. A series of serious questions arise from the challenging brief: 'What will such a city look like? What happens to such an hypothesis if cars are the only mode of transport? What will such a city look like when it is only accessed by public transport? Or by walking?' How one can extend the knowledge of compact or dense cities? How fast cities can be? Is increased speed an ideal concept for future cities? Is development of new infrastructure sustainable for cities in future? Can Rotterdam become such a city? Is it possible to upscale Manhattan? How does mobility affects the working and living qualities of the cities and how is mobility shaping cities?

Mobility written by Francine Houben and has been published by Nai010 Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Architectural criticism categories.

The theme of the first Rotterdam International Architecture Biennale is mobility as this relates to city and landscape, and the design culture that comes with it. Held between May and September 2003, the Biennale will bring together numerous universities, architects, urbanists, spatial planners and designers to swap experiences and discuss new strategies for giving shape to (car) mobility. This unique book shows the results of the international research in its various forms: statistics, photography, text, visual collage and design proposals. These together give a tangible and insightful look at the mobility culture of wide-ranging cities and countries: Mexico City, Hongkong and Guangzhou, Djakarta, Budapest, the Ruhr Valley, Beirut, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Peking and Randstad Holland. The editors, Francine Houben and Luisa Calabrese, see their aim as twofold. On the one hand they hope to learn how to work with infrastructure and motorway culture by studying the different cultural and geographical contexts. On the other, they seek to draw up an agenda for the future, one that establishes the role to be played there by the various design disciplines. Both research and book are the fruits of a collaboration with the universities of Wuppertal, Aachen, Berlin, California, Monterrey (Mexico), Tokyo, Hong Kong, Peking, Beirut, Budapest, Bandung and Delft.

Mobility Of The Line written by Ivana Wingham and has been published by Birkhauser this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Architecture categories.

The line is the constitutive element of every drawing and forms the core element of any design - for art, architecture, urban design or design in general. It resists reduction to simple linearity, but rather takes on complex and dynamic forms that attract the viewer in various ways, both consciously and suggestively. Whether analogue or digital, line is mobile as the forces, movements and effects that line produce are different for each type of line: straight, meandering, interrupted or even invisible. The book is a stimulating celebration of the manifold aspects of line, using unique examples from architecture, design and art, combining interviews with designers and essays by various authors.

This book argues that mobility is the central theme of the interwar mode of design known today as Art Deco. It is present on the very surfaces of Art Deco objects and architecture – in iconography and general formal qualities (whether the zigzag rectilinear forms popular in the 1920s or curvilinear streamlining of the 1930s). By focussing on mobility as a means of tying the seemingly disparate qualities of Art Deco together, Michael Windover shows how the surface-level expressions correspond as well with underpinning systems of mobility, including those associated with migration, transportation, commodity exchange, capital, and communication. Journeying across the globe – from a skyscraper in Vancouver, B.C., to a department store in Los Angeles, and from super-cinemas in Bombay (Mumbai) to radio cabinets in Canadian living rooms – this richly illustrated book examines the reach of Art Deco as it affected public cultures. Windover’s innovative perspective exposes some of the socio-political consequences of this “mode of mobility” and offers some reasons as to how and why Art Deco was incorporated into everyday lifestyles around the world.

Climate change and increasing resource scarcity together with rising traffic volumes force us to develop new environmentally friendly and people-oriented mobility options. New forms of smart mobility are becoming possible thanks to the expansion of digital information systems, and we will soon be able to reconfigure different modes of climate-friendly transport depending on our needs. These developments represent a significant challenge for the design of a wide range of different mobility spaces. While Volume 1 of this series focused on practical aspects, Volume 2 collects research methods and findings from the fields of design, architecture, urban planning, geography, social sciences, traffic planning, psychology, and communication technologies. The book's consideration of the possibilities and prospects of user-centred mobility design offers an important contribution to the ongoing debate around the mobility revolution.

Airport Urbanism written by Max Hirsh and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-15 with Social Science categories.

Thirty years ago, few residents of Asian cities had ever been on a plane, much less outside their home countries. Today, flying, and flying abroad, is commonplace. How has this leap in cross-border mobility affected the design and use of such cities? And how is it accelerating broader socioeconomic and political changes in Asian societies? In Airport Urbanism, Max Hirsh undertakes an unprecedented study of airport infrastructure in five Asian cities—Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. Through this lens he examines the exponential increase in international air traffic and its implications for the planning and design of the contemporary city. By investigating the low-cost, informal, and transborder transport systems used by new members of the flying public—such as migrant workers, retirees, and Asia’s emerging middle class—he uncovers an architecture of incipient global mobility that has been inconspicuously inserted into places not typically associated with the infrastructure of international air travel. Drawing on material gathered in restricted zones of airports and border control facilities, Hirsh provides a fascinating, up-close view of the mechanics of cross-border mobility. Moreover, his personal experience of growing up and living on three continents inflects his analyses with unique insight into the practicalities of international migration and into the mindset of people on the move.
