Herod the Great was one of the famous builders of the classical world. Herod the Great, King of Judaea from 444 B.C., is known as one of the world's great villains. This notoriety has overshadowed his actual achievements, particularly his role as a client king of Rome during Augustus's reign as emperor. An essential aspect of Herod's responsibilities as king of Judaea was his role as a builder. Remarkably innovative, he created an astonishing record of architectural achievement, not only in Judaea but also throughout Greece and the Roman east. Duane W. Roller systematically presents and discusses all the building projects known to have been initiated by Herod, and locates this material in a broad historical and cultural context. Bringing together previously inaccessible material, Roller enriches our understanding of the enigmatic Herod and provides new insights into Roman architecture. A reprint of the volume originally published in English in 2001, with the addition of a chapter describing finds from the excavations carried out on Mount Herodium and its slopes from 2006-2017. The most important discovery made by Professor Ehud Netzer at Herodium is the mausoleum of King Herod the Great. This volume offers a summary of the palaces erected by the Hasmoneans, followed by those of the greatest builder of ancient Israel - King Herod the Great (37-4 BC E). The extensive excavations conducted by Professor Netzer at Jericho uncovered a winter palace (previously unknown) equipped with many swimming pools, bathing installations, ritual baths, and ornamental gardens. Additional remains from the Hasmonean period (second-first centuries BCE ), including the desert fortresses and an anchorage for boats on the Dead Sea, are also described in detail. Many of Herod' s palaces were minutely described by Josephus Flavius: Masada, Herodium, and the central palace in Jerusalem. To these the author adds detailed accounts of two Herodian palaces not described by Josephus - the winter palace at Jericho and the promontory palace at Caesarea. The volume also presents the remains of the Herodian palaces at well - known desert fortresses: Cypros, Alexandrium, and Machaerus.
