The compiled essays offer various themes and ways of approaching historiography. Each chapter probes the state of contemporary theorization of architecture histories, working toward the theme of critically re-writing history. Essential to each author's contribution are specific traditions created by the mole of history burrowing through the past. This book concerns the historian's conjectures towards capturing the past and present zeitgeist. Temporality is the theme running through the narrative of this volume. It raises the question of whether the ever-growing body of work on architectural history should be considered as history. More specifically, what is the intersection between history and architectural history? Furthermore, can every text focused on architecture's past be considered categorically historiographic? To study the built environment of the Americas is to wrestle with an inherent contradiction. While the disciplines of architecture, urban design, landscape, and planning share the fundamental belief that space and place matter, the overwhelming majority of canonical knowledge and the vernacular used to describe these disciplines comes from another, very different, continent. With this book, Fernando Luiz Lara discusses several theories of space—drawing on cartography, geography, anthropology, and mostly architecture—and proposes counterweights to five centuries of Eurocentrism. The first part of Spatial Theories for the Americas offers a critique of Eurocentrism in the discipline of architecture, problematizing its theoretical foundation in relation to the inseparability of modernization and colonization. The second part makes explicit the insufficiencies of a hegemonic Western tradition at the core of spatial theories by discussing a long list of authors who have thought about the Americas. To overcome centuries of Eurocentrism, Lara concludes, will require a tremendous effort, but, nonetheless, we have the responsibility of looking at the built environment of the Americas through our own lenses. Spatial Theories for the Americas proposes a fundamental step in that direction.

Women were active in landscape architecture in Scandinavia throughout the twentieth century, yet little is known about their contribution. This volume therefore asks: where are the women in Scandinavian landscape architecture? It thus presents new knowledge about women’s contributions to the shaping of modern cities and landscapes in the Scandinavian welfare states. With chapters by some of the most respected architectural and landscape architectural historians, as well as up-and-coming scholars and practice-based artistic researchers, the book make three major contributions. First, it asks the previously neglected question of women’s contributions to twntieth-century landscape architecture in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Second, it does so from a transnational perspective, bringing together researchers from Scandinavia and Finland. Third, it documents how collaborative formats for knowledge creation can generate new insights and fruitful links between researchers and research materials. Garish churches, gabled panel blocks, neo-historical tenements—this book is about these and other architectural oddities that emerged in Poland between 1975 and 1989, a period characterised by the decline of the authoritarian socialist regime and waves of political protest. During that period, committed architects defied repressive politics and persistent shortages, and designed houses and churches which adapted eclectic historical forms and geometric volumes, and were based on traditional typologies. These buildings show a very different background of postmodernism, far removed from the debates over Robert Venturi, Philip Johnson, or Prince Charles in Western Europe and North America—a context in which postmodern architecture stood not for world-weary irony in an economically saturated society, but for individualised counter-propositions to a collectivist ideology, for a yearning for truth and spiritual values, and for a discourse on distinctiveness and national identity. Postmodern Architecture in Socialist Poland argues that this new architecture marked the beginning of socio-political transformation and at the same time showed postmodernism's reconciliatory potential. In light of massive historical ruptures and wartime destruction, these buildings successfully responded to the contradictory desires for historical continuity and acknowledgment of rupture and loss. Next to international ideas, the architects took up domestic traditions, such as the ideas of the Polish school of historic conservation and long-standing national-patriotic narratives. They thus contributed to the creation of a built environment and intellectual climate that have been influential to date. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars interested in postmodern architecture and urban design, as well as in the socio-cultural background and transformative potential of architecture under socialism.
