Dit boek is een ingrijpende herziening van de in 2005 bij uitgeverij ThiemeMeulenhoff verschenen tiende druk van Geschiedenis van de bouwkunst, verzorgd door Bart Verbrugge, na twee voorgaande drukken die waren geschreven in samenwerking met de in 2004 overleden architectuurjournalist Wim J. van Heuvel. Een aantal zaken, zoals de hoofdopzet en de doelgroep, is voor het voorliggende boek hetzelfde gebleven, maar daarnaast is ook veel veranderd. Om die reden is gekozen voor een nieuwe titel: Architectuur- en bouwgeschiedenis in perspectief, met als ondertitel: Bouwen en bouwkunst in de Nederlanden en de Westerse wereld. Hiermee worden de volgende kerndoelstellingen van dit boek benadrukt: - niet alleen ingaan op de vormgevingsaspecten, maar ook op de ontwikkeling van de bouwtechniek, bouwmaterialen, enz. - deze ontwikkelingen worden geplaatst in de maatschappelijke en sociaaleconomische context. Daarbij wordt ook duidelijk gemaakt dat de rol van de opdrachtgever vaak cruciaal was voor het tot stand komen van goede architectuur. Geïllustreerd met vele illustraties wordt de geschiedenis van de architectuur en van het bouwen, van de prehistorie tot nu toegelicht. Er wordt niet alleen ingaan op de vormgevingsaspecten, maar ook op de ontwikkeling van de bouwtechniek en bouwmaterialen, enz. Deze ontwikkelingen worden geplaatst in de maatschappelijke en sociaaleconomische context. Een rode draad in het boek is de beschrijving van wisselwerkingen, waarmee nadruk wordt gelegd op de continue processen in de architectuurgeschiedenis. Dat betreft wisselwerkingen: - met architectuur uit het verleden (tijd); - door invloeden tussen verschillende regio's (plaats); - met andere kunsten (vooral de toegepaste kunst) en technologische ontwikkelingen. Bovendien werden en worden de meeste in dit boek besproken architecten en gebouwen beschouwd als invloedrijk, waarbij in veel gevallen ook sprake was en is van invloed of inspiratie van gebouwen en architecten uit een verder verleden. Naast deze 'hoofdtekst' zijn op zichzelf staande 'kaderteksten' opgenomen waarin een belangrijk thema apart wordt toegelicht. Dit boek onderscheidt zich van de vele andere overzichtswerken door de gestructureerde beschrijving van de Nederlandse en Belgische bouwkunst in relatie met de ontwikkeling van de Westerse bouwkunst als geheel. Uitgangspunt is dat Nederlandse en Belgische lezers te zien krijgen welke gebouwen in eigen land de belangrijkste voorbeelden zijn van een bepaalde stroming, waarbij steeds duidelijk wordt gemaakt wat de relatie is tot de internationale ontwikkelingen van de westerse bouwkunst. Om die reden werd met name bij de opleidingen Bouwkunde in het middelbaar en hoger beroepsonderwijs in Nederland en in het secundair en hoger onderwijs in België de voorgaande versie van dit boek (Geschiedenis van de bouwkunst) op grote schaal gebruikt.
