Im Jahre 1893 verabschiedete die Stadtgemeinde Prag das sogenannte "Assanierungsgesetz", das eine völlige Umgestaltung der Prager Altstadt und des ehemaligen Judenghettos der Stadt zur Folge hatte. Innerhalb von zwanzig Jahren entstand im Zentrum der Stadt, rund um den berühmten Altstädter Ring, ein neues Stadtgebiet mit einer das großstädtische Bürgertum repräsentierenden Architektur. Sie spiegelt in besonderer Weise den künstlerischen Umbruch der Jahrhundertwende vom Eklektizismus über die Sezession bis zur Moderne und die heftigen Kontroversen zwischen nationalbewußt denkenden tschechischen Architekten und den Befürwortern der Regeln der internationalen Moderne wider. Die Grundlage der vorliegenden Publikation bildet ein fundiertes Studium aller in Prager Archiven vorhandenen Entwürfe und Schriften zu den einzelnen Objekten, von Quellen wie auch Originalphotographien, die den Baubestand vor der Sanierung belegen, sowie von zeitgenössischen Texten, Kommentaren und Kritiken zur Sanierung selbst und der Erscheinungsweise der neuen Architektur. Auf diese Weise konnte erstmals eine vollständige Dokumentation des "Assanierungsprozesses" in Prag erstellt werden, die zusätzlich mit Bilddokumenten – zeitgenössischen Photographien, Entwürfen und Aufnahmen der einzelnen Bauten – belegt wird. Den Textteil begleitet ein umfangreicher wissenschaftlicher Katalog, in dem alle an der Sanierung Prags beteiligten Architekten und Baumeister und alle Objekte dieses Stadtgebietes erfaßt sind.
