Es wird weiterhin ins Detail der Architektur gegangen sowie die Sichten und Ebenen des Systems erläutert. Für die einzelnen Sichten werden ausgewählte Darstellungsformen vorgestellt. Im vierten Kapitel sollen die Einsatzmöglichkeiten des ARIS-Tools als auch der Einsatz anhand eines praktischen Beispiels erläutert werden. Speziell dazu wird die Verbindung von ARIS zu SAP aufgezeigt.

An der Realisierung integrierter Informationssysteme sind verschiedene Partner aus Fachabteilungen, Informatik sowie externe Berater und Hersteller beteiligt. Sie benötigen klare Regeln und Abgrenzungen, nach denen sie ihre Teilaufgaben bearbeiten können, damit ein schlüssiges Gesamtprojekt entsteht. In einer Architektur muß deshalb festgelegt werden, aus welchen Komponenten ein Informationssystem besteht und mit Hilfe welcher Methoden es beschrieben werden soll. Während früher lediglich einzelne Beschreibungssichten wie Funktionsdarstellung oder Datenmodelle dominierten, wird in diesem Buch eine Architektur erarbeitet, in der Funktions-, Organisations- und Datensicht eines Informationssystems über die Entwicklungsphasen Fachkonzept, DV-Konzept und Implementierung gleichgewichtig behandelt werden. Die entwickelte ARIS-Architektur wird als Informationsmodell mit Hilfe des Entity-Relationship-Ansatzes konkret beschrieben. Dieses Informationsmodell ist Grundlage eines systematischen und rationellen Methodeneinsatzes bei der Entwicklung von Informationssystemen. Weiter ist es die Basis eines Repositories, in dem die anwendungsbezogenen Daten-, Organisations- und Funktionsmodelle eines Unternehmens gespeichert werden. Wesentliche Eigenschaft der ARIS-Architektur ist dabei, daß die unterschiedlichen Sichten nicht nur isoliert betrachtet werden, sondern in einer Steuerungssicht auch ihre Beziehungen untereinander abgebildet werden. Dadurch können aktuelle Entwicklungen wie verteilte Datenbanken oder objektorientierte Ansätze in die Architektur eingeordnet werden.

Dies soll im Zuge dieses Essays thematisiert werden. Für ein besseres Verständnis müssen dabei einige Fragen geklärt werden: „Was wird unter Geschäftsprozess und Modellierung verstanden und warum sollten Prozesse modelliert werden?“, „Wie lassen sich diese beschreiben und dokumentieren?“ sowie „Welche Notationen zur Modellierung von Geschäftsprozessen stehen zur Verfügung und über welche Modellierungselemente (Objekte) verfügen diese?“. Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, definiert Kapitel 2 zunächst den Begriff Prozessmodellierung. Anschließend wird eine Methode, die für die Modellierung von Geschäftsprozessen zur Verfügung steht, und ausgewählte Notationen, in diesem Fall BPMN, vorgestellt. Die technologische Entwicklung und die zunehmende Globalisierung stellen immer mehr Anforderungen an viele Unternehmen. Entwicklungspfade hin zu einer internationalen Unternehmenskultur und ständige Kostenoptimierung zwingen Unternehmen immer mehr zur Verbesserung ihrer Prozesse. Die Geschäftsprozessmodellierung stellt in Bezug auf die Entwicklung betrieblicher Anwendungssysteme sowie als Teil der Prozessorientierung im Rahmen eines allgemeinen Managementansatzes ein wichtiges Thema dar. Dementsprechend sollte Geschäftsprozessmodellierung auch Bestandteil der beruflichen Erstausbildung sein. Um adaptiv mit den Veränderungen im Marktumfeld umgehen zu können, wird eine agile Arbeitsweise in Unternehmen verlangt. Für die Gewährleistung dieser, ist es notwendig die Prozesse zu kennen, aber auch unnötige Schritte in Prozessen auszusortieren um nicht notwendige Ressourcen zu sparen. Auch infolge der ständigen Fluktuation im Unternehmen ist es wichtig, die Prozesse digital zu erfassen, damit neue Mitarbeiter ohne großen Aufwand eingearbeitet werden können.

The first English-language edition of this book was published in 1989 under the title "Enterprise-Wide Data Modelling." It introduced a new enterprise data model that has since gone on to enjoy widespread use as a reference model. Since that time, the author has continued to develop the representation of application problems, both on a theoretical basis using modeling languages and on a practical basis using real-world studies. This has led to so many new aspects that this second English-language edition (the original German version is now in its fifth edition) constitutes a completely new book. The new title expresses the stricter emphasis on business processes in contrast to the previous edition, which was geared more toward a functional structure. This approach reflects the trend toward process oriented structural and procedural organization in enterprises that is currently being supported by new means of information processing. Perhaps the most obvious way in which the second English-language edition differs from the first is in the increased number of pages. This is a direct result of the higher degree of detail and the more thorough problem description presented in the new edition. The degree of detail has increased in the case of those problems that are particularly important in terms of selecting and designing information systems in an industrial enterprise, e.g., the product description and CAM factory organization. This approach provides greater reality and thus facilitates a better understanding of the complex organism that is an industrial enterprise.

The theme of this book is the development of partnerships between manufacturing companies, their suppliers and customers and the facilitating of these partnerships by information technology and telecommunications. In the 1980s the emphasis in manufacturing was on integration 'within the four walls' of the manufacturing plant. The main issues facing researchers and industrial practitioners at the time were CAD/CAM integration, integration of production planning and control systems, the development of sophisticated computer driven manufacturing, assembly and testing systems and their control through sophisticated shop floor control systems. Today the emphasis has moved towards supply chain management (integration of the supply chain through Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Just in Time (JIT) or Quick Response approaches) and customer driven manufacturing. This includes the integration of manufacturing and distribution/logistics planning and control systems. Consequently, success for manufacturing companies in the 1990s requires closer collaboration with customers, suppliers and distributors than in the past. Information Technology and the emergence of a powerful global information infrastructure enable manufacturing industries throughout Europe to develop collaborative partnership across the value chain. Successful collaboration is achieved by the sharing of information at all phases of the business cycle, across the supply chain and across national and international boundaries. The need to collaborate across the supply chain has particular consequences for small and medium sized manufacturing (SMEs) companies, many of whom are compared and subassembly suppliers to the larger companies. Indeed the collaboration between supplier SMEs and their large customers has, in many cases, gone beyond JIT supply of components based on orders delivered, processed and frequently paid for using EDI technology and now extends to joint design and engineering activity. Collaboration between manufacturing companies across the supply chain is therefore placing increasing pressure on the developers of the global information superhighway and on the developers of CAD and other engineering software to ensure compliance with emerging standards, such as STEP, in order to allow intercompany collaboration. These are the issues which form the background of this book.
