Die Autoren dieses Bandes eröffnen Zugänge, Perspektiven und Standpunkte zu einer Architektur- und Planungsethik für Menschen in einer bebauten und bewohnten Welt, die auch in Zukunft bewohnbar bleiben soll. Den Beiträgen ist gemeinsam, dass sie von einer konkreten Praxis ausgehen und zeigen, welche ethisch relevanten Aspekte mit dem Handeln der Akteure verbunden sind oder mit welchen moralischen Herausforderungen dieses Handeln konfrontiert wird. In einem ersten Zugriff werden Zugänge zu moralischen, ethischen und politischen Aspekten der Planung identifiziert und für weitere architektur- und planungsethische Überlegungen erschlossen. Anschließend werden grundlegende begriffliche und theoretische Perspektiven einer Architektur- und Planungsethik aus lebensweltlichen Erfahrungen oder Handlungen der Akteure oder der Eigenlogik architektonischer Entwurfs- und Planungsprozesse entwickelt. Abschließend wird das heikle Verhältnis des Ästhetischen und Moralischen innerhalb architektur- und planungsethischer Überlegungen begrifflich präzisiert und mit neuen Argumenten gewichtet.

Der Tagungsband versammelt Beiträge des 2. Forums Architekturwissenschaft zum Thema „Architektur im Gebrauch". Vertreten sind Positionen aus Soziologie, Architektur und Landschaftsarchitektur, Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte, Philosophie sowie Theater-, Film- und Kulturwissenschaften. Die Autorinnen und Autoren nähern sich dem Thema in zwei Perspektiven. Zum einen interessiert die lebensweltliche Verankerung von Architektur: die Gebrauchserfahrungen und die vielfältigen Weisen, in denen das Gebaute im Alltag jedes Menschen in Erscheinung tritt. Zum anderen werden die Vorstellungen vom Gebrauch in Prozessen des Planens und Bauens untersucht. Dabei treten unweigerlich auch Spannungsverhältnisse zutage – zwischen Planerinnen und Nutzern, aber auch zwischen unterschiedlichen Gebrauchsweisen. Diesen Aspekten wird sowohl in theoretischen Auseinandersetzungen zu einem Begriff von Gebrauch in der Architektur als auch in empirischen Studien zu einzelnen Bauten, Bautypen, zeitgeschichtlichen Gebrauchsphänomenen und alltagsweltlichen Situationen auf den Grund gegangen. The conference proceedings include papers presented at the 2nd Forum Architekturwissenschaft on ‘Architecture In Use’ and combine perspectives from sociology, architecture, landscape architecture, history, art history, philosophy and cultural studies. The authors approach the topic in two perspectives. On the one hand, the volume addresses architecture as a phenomenon rooted in the lifeworld by discussing the experience of using architecture and the manifold ways in which the built environment becomes meaningful in everyday life. On the other hand, concepts of usage in planning and construction processes are examined. Consequently, tensions between planners and users, but also between different ways of using architecture, become evident. Both theoretical articles on the notion of use and empirical studies on specific buildings, different building types and usages in historical contexts or everyday situation define challenges within a “Architekturwissenschaft”.

In the face of great challenges, utopian thinking is currently in vogue. The fact that utopias, with their ideas of an idealized target society, are not compatible with the basic features of an Open Society was already pointed out by Karl Popper in his book 'Die Offene Gesellschaft und ihre Feinde' (The Open Society and its Enemies) under the impression of National Socialism and Stalinism. In the present book, further forms of Closed Societies and the principal similarities (and differences) of their construction are examined. This is done by drawing on Ralf Dahrendorf's concept of life chances, in which he deals with the interaction of options and ligatures. The ambivalence of Dahrendorf's understanding of ligatures, since they restrict options on the one hand, but also give them meaning on the other, is resolved by a threefold differentiation: into ethical and moral, internally and externally directed, and explicit and implicit ligatures. While the former are capable of enabling life chances, the latter tend to limit them. Based on this, the authors elaborate on the landscape (side) consequences of various closed societies and how ill-suited they are for dealing with current challenges.

Public theologies reflect on the contextuality of the Christian religion. Much of this contextuality is dependent on place: place as the culture and the society in which religions are situated, place as the position from where a theologian speaks, place as the biographical contingencies that shape people's lives. Moreover, public theologies ask for the contribution of Christian ethics to society, thereby shaping the social, cultural, and religious space to which they belong. The contributions in this volume analyse the categories of space and place in order to deepen the understanding of contextuality, thereby taking up some of the challenges presented by the so-called "spatial turn".
