In the face of great challenges, utopian thinking is currently in vogue. The fact that utopias, with their ideas of an idealized target society, are not compatible with the basic features of an Open Society was already pointed out by Karl Popper in his book 'Die Offene Gesellschaft und ihre Feinde' (The Open Society and its Enemies) under the impression of National Socialism and Stalinism. In the present book, further forms of Closed Societies and the principal similarities (and differences) of their construction are examined. This is done by drawing on Ralf Dahrendorf's concept of life chances, in which he deals with the interaction of options and ligatures. The ambivalence of Dahrendorf's understanding of ligatures, since they restrict options on the one hand, but also give them meaning on the other, is resolved by a threefold differentiation: into ethical and moral, internally and externally directed, and explicit and implicit ligatures. While the former are capable of enabling life chances, the latter tend to limit them. Based on this, the authors elaborate on the landscape (side) consequences of various closed societies and how ill-suited they are for dealing with current challenges.

Landscape appears stable and consistent. At least, this is a common perception of landscape. This view ignores the contingency of landscape, which is evident in the past and future as well as in the present and not just in relation to the physical spaces into which 'landscape' is projected but also in relation to social constructions and individual experience. The contingency of landscape becomes clear in inverse landscapes, which illustrate states and processes that are not impossible, but also not requisite. In this way, inverse landscapes form a tool for operationalizing the neopragmatist idea of expanding contingency. The concept of inverse landscape is subjected to criticism in various ways, from internal criticism to metatheoretical criticism to life-related pragmatic criticism. This critique is performed from an interdisciplinary perspective. The aim of this book is to further develop the concept, both regarding a more differentiated understanding of the contingency of landscape and also concerning the question of how it can help to solve practical problems in the context of 'landscape'.

Landscape and food - there is hardly a form of tourism that is not oriented towards one or the other (often both). As a result of this close connection, our anthology explores the different facets of these links. Drawing on the concepts of Touristscapes and Foodscapes, an international group of authors provide theoretical considerations as well as overviews of larger spatial units and local and thematic case studies. What the contributions have in common is their focus on a synthetic-landscape view of the topics dealt with, ranging from the investigation of post-socialist material substrates for the development of current touristscapes and foodscapes, to the touristic use of socialist heritage and phenomena of dark tourism, to the development of gastronomic offers and their significance for the construction of identities, but also the staging of places for social media contexts. Contributions from authors, particularly from the fields of geography, economics and sociology, highlight the diversity of perspectives on the rapidly developing research field of landscape, food and tourism.

Redescribing Horizontal Geographies written by Olaf Kühne and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-08 with Social Science categories.
The first book in the series provides the concept of a theoretical redefinition of 'horizontal geographies'. These denote the spatial syntheses as undertaken in various disciplines, whether as regional studies, area studies, new regional geography, and many more. The basis of the redescription is philosophical neopragmatism, which has occasionally been taken up in the spatial sciences, but has never been differentiated into a theory-driven empirical research program. This development of the research program guides the present book. Philosophical neopragmatism, especially as conceptualized by Richard Rorty, focuses in particular on contingency of society, self, and language, which also allows spatial syntheses to be understood not as 'images of reality' but as contingent proposals for redescribing spaces. As a result of the complexity of spatial processes, their horizontal geographic study requires a triangulation of theories, methods, researcher perspectives, data, and the involvement of people without expert special knowledge. To highlight the contingency of the spatial syntheses, the presentation of the results - —here especially graphic and cartographic - —resorts to the attitude of irony. Regarding the six levels of trigangulation, neopragmatism acts as a meta-theoretical orientation framework. Against the background of the complexity of spatial developments on the one hand and to operationalize Rorty's principle of private self-creation and public solidarity on the other hand, Ralf Dahrendorf's concept of life chances is drawn upon. Especially in the differentiation of this concept made in this book, it serves on the one hand for an understanding access of the (also spatial) expression of options and ligatures,, and on the other hand it offers a normative framework for the evaluation of socio-spatial developments. The reference to neopragmatic studies on spatial syntheses conducted to date and evaluated in this book shows the potential of the approach elaborated here in conceptual detail for the first time.

Transnational Infrastructures And The Transformation Of Global Orders written by Hans-Jürgen Bieling and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-22 with Social Science categories.
This book offers a multidisciplinary insight into the significance of infrastructural change for global orders. While infrastructures form the material basis of our everyday lives and their design and use determine the further development of our societies, infrastructures themselves often remain invisible in everyday life. Although they are and have always been subject to political conflicts their contestation often only becomes visible when the circulation of data, goods and people is disrupted. Rarely has this been more evident than at the moment, when we are experiencing a multitude of overlapping global crises. The threat of the nearing climate catastrophe shows us the inadequacies and climatic impacts of our energy and transport systems. The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and the subsequent energy crisis underline how dependent we are on infrastructures and how their political instrumentalization contributes to the escalation of conflicts. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed the vulnerability not only of national infrastructures but also of global supply chains. These crises illustrate twofold: first they show that transnational infrastructures are no longer only deepening ties between individuals, societies, and states. This was for long the hope of transnational actors. Infrastructures may still stabilize global orders, but they also foster their reconfiguration, facilitating the establishment and rise of certain political actors and the decline of others. Second, these crises force us to ask about the significance of transformed infrastructures for global orders; how this transformation manifested itself historically and how it is shaping the present and future alike. What can a comprehensive understanding of the impact of infrastructures on global orders contribute to the challenges of the 21st century? With this anthology we approach this question from different perspectives. The book deals with infrastructures in different fields – from energy to transport, from communication to migration – and at different levels of society – local, regional, global. What unites all the contributions is an interest in showing what the respective dynamics within and among these fields as well as the driving forces behind these developments mean for our society. This book is aimed at a wide audience from infrastructure researchers to IR experts as well as from colleagues with expertise in specific policy fields to the general reader interested in the effects often invisible transnational infrastructures have on the organization of their everyday life.

The Human Experience Of Space And Place written by Anne Buttimer and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-03 with Science categories.
Humanistic geography is one of the major emerging themes which has recently dominated geographic writing. Anne Buttimer has been one of the leading figures in the rise of humanistic geography, and the research students she collected round her at Clark University in the 1970s constituted something of a ‘school’ of humanistic geographers. This school developed a significantly new style of geographical inquiry, giving special emphasis to people’s experience of place, space and environment and often using philosophical and subjective methodology. This collection of essays, first published in 1980, brings together this school and offers insight into philosophical and practical issues concerning the human experience of environments. An extensive range of topics are discussed, and the aim throughout is to weave analytical and critical thought into a more comprehensive understanding of lived experience. This book will be of interest to students of human geography.
