Auf der Suche nach „unabgegoltenen semantischen Gehalten“, die „ins Profane“ übersetzt werden sollen, folgt Habermas in Auch eine Geschichte der Philosophie der Spur des sakralen Komplexes von der Vorzeit bis zum nachmetaphyischen Denken. Dabei übernimmt er die in der abendländischen Geschichte übliche Tendenz, das Heilige in einen profanisierten und einen apophatischen, metatopisch ausgelagerten Aspekt zu spalten. Der Fokus auf der „gelingenden Sozialintegration“ reduziert das Heilige auf den profanisierten Aspekt und verliert den apophatischen Aspekt aus den Augen. Dieser kehrt jedoch unweigerlich als jene dunkle Quelle wieder, die die Dualektik von Glauben und Wissen weiter antreibt und neue Weltsichten und Systementwürfe provoziert. Es kann gezeigt werden, dass der sakrale Komplex seiner formalen Struktur nach ein Zusammenspiel von Vorstellungen der Verbindung und der Trennung ist, das allen inhaltlichen Neuentwürfen zugrunde liegt. Unter diesem Blickwinkel kommt eine andere Geschichte der Philosophie in den Blick – eine Geschichte phantasmatischer Verbindungs-und-Trennungsverhältnisse, die die Beziehung von Glauben und Wissen in einem anderen Licht erscheinen lässt.

In an era of Market Triumphalism, this book follows the quest to address a myriad of prominent socio-economic pathologies in Western democracies – such as skyrocketing financial inequality, marketization, hereditary privileges, as well as dysfunctional types of merit-based justice – without surrendering their liberal foundation altogether in favor of an entirely different political framework. The author argues that classical liberalism should be regarded as a valuable doctrine worth keeping, and that the liberal tradition is not inevitably destined to succumb into the neoliberal and increasingly plutocratic as well as nepotistic manifestation responsible for the growing discontentment with the ‘liberal order’ during the past approximately four decades. Instead, the meritocratic promise inherent to classical liberalism must be taken more serious as a principle of justice and efficiency which – in turn – should be instrumentalized as an imperative for the provision of substantially greater equality of opportunity. The argument culminates in an advocacy for significantly higher levels of state regulations – for example via taxation to make higher education accessible to all sufficiently talented students independent of their family background – based on the claim that such interventions are justified if they bring about the levelled playing field necessary to a genuine meritocracy. Correspondingly, the author proposes policies more frequently associated with the postulates of social welfare egalitarians, however, he does so exclusively from within the pond of classical liberal principles.

Natural Materials of the Holy Land and the Visual Translation of Place, 500-1500, focuses on the unique ways that natural materials carry the spirit of place. Since early Christianity, wood, earth, water and stone were taken from loca sancta to signify them elsewhere. Academic discourse has indiscriminately grouped material tokens from holy places and their containers with architectural and topographical emulations, two-dimensional images and bodily relics. However, unlike textual or visual representations, natural materials do not describe or interpret the Holy Land; they are part of it. Tangible and timeless, they realize the meaning of their place of origin in new locations. What makes earth, stones or bottled water transported from holy sites sacred? How do they become pars pro toto, signifying the whole from which they were taken? This book will examine natural media used for translating loca sancta, the processes of their sanctification and how, although inherently abstract, they become charged with meaning. It will address their metamorphosis, natural or induced; how they change the environment to which they are transported; their capacity to translate a static and distant site elsewhere; the effect of their relocation on users/viewers; and how their containers and staging are used to communicate their substance.
