Text in German. What makes a city and gives it an independent profile is its architecture, in Hamburg associated with names like Fritz Schumacher, Gustav Oelsner, Fritz Höger and Karl Schneider, architects who gave the city its Hanseatic identity and its outstanding architectural character. But it is not just the buildings of the past that make Hamburg what it is. Even most of the buildings of the last 10 years have an excellent quality. Thirteen tours of the city convey the complexity of a particular image of development. Of course none of the 13 tours suggested could be managed at one go. Individual sections should be sought out, building up a series of areas that are different and not least attractive in terms of landscape, e. g. the route from the late-19th century industrial quarter of Ottensen through the villa suburb of Othmarschen to the picturesque fishermen's and pilots' village of Övelgönne on the bank of the Elbe. Or a thematic focus could be chosen, e. g. the large housing estates and urban development of the Schumacher era in Winterhude and Barmbek. And if you have very little time for a visit to Hamburg, and would like to devote it to information about current development in the city centre, then you should start at the Alsterarkaden and explore the shopping arcades between Neuer Wall and Gänsemarkt. Then you could continue your tour with the Deutsch-Japanisches Zentrum, from which you proceed over the Fleet island to Gruner & Jahr's spectacular publishing house and finally to the Hanseatic Trade Center at the western end of the Speicherstadt.

Contemporary Architecture In Germany 1970 1996 written by Gerd Bruyn de and has been published by Birkhäuser this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-06 with Architecture categories.

In recent years, the importance of architecture in Germany has surged. There is hardly any other country in the world where internationally acclaimed architects including Tadao Ando, Richard Meier, James Stirling and Norman Foster to name a few have erected so many major structures. And, in turn, the buildings by German architects, e.g., Gottfried Bohm, Thomas Herzog, Josef Paul Kleihues and Oswald Mathias Ungers, are meriting increasing international attention. With its selection of 50 buildings, this handsome volume documents the development and diversity of contemporary architecture in Germany since 1970. It deliberately assumes the character of an introduction and therefore is aimed not only at a specialized readership but also, and above all, at culturally interested readers at home and abroad. Gerd de Bruyn opens the work with a sketch of German architectural history since 1945 and Gerd Zimmermann presents the special position of architecture in the former GDR. The entries in the main section of this reference work are ordered alphabetically, by architect, and feature 50 specially chosen buildings, each on a double page with photographs, ground plans and a project description.

Material Change written by Jan De Maeyer and has been published by Leuven University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-17 with Religion categories.

The long nineteenth century (c.1780–c.1920) in Western Europe saw an unprecedented rise in the production and possession of material goods. The material culture diversified and led to a rich variety of expressions. Dovetailing with a process of confessionalisation that manifested itself quite simultaneously, material religion witnessed its heyday in this period; from church buildings to small devotional objects. The present volume analyses how various types of reform (state, societal, and ecclesiastical) that were part of the process of modernisation affected the material devotional culture within Protestantism, Anglicanism, and Roman Catholicism. Although the contributions in this book start from a comparative European perspective, the case studies mostly focus on individual countries in North-West Europe, namely Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. The concept of ‘material religion’ is approached in a very inclusive way. The volume discusses, amongst others, parish infrastructures and religious buildings that are part of land and cityscapes, but also looks into interior design and decorations of chapels, churches, monasteries, cemeteries, and educational, charitable, and health institutions. It comprises the fine arts of religious painting and sculpture, the applied arts, and iconographic designs. As far as private material culture is concerned, this volume examines and presents objects related to private devotion at home, including a great variety of popular devotional and everyday life objects, such as booklets, cards, photographs, and posters.

This is a study of a distinctive brand of modernism that first emerged in late nineteenth-century Germany and remained influential throughout the inter-war years and beyond. Its supporters saw themselves as a new elite, ideally placed to tackle the many challenges facing the young and rapidly industrializing German nation-state. They defined themselves as bourgeois, and acted as self-appointed champions of a modern consciousness. Focusing on figures such as Hermann Muthesius, Fritz Schumacher, and Karl-Ernst Osthaus, and the activities of the Deutscher Werkbund and other networks of bourgeois designers, writers, and 'experts', this book shows how bourgeois modernism shaped the infrastructure of social and political life in early twentieth-century Germany. Bourgeois modernism exercised its power not so much in the realm of ideas, but by transforming the physical environment of German cities, from domestic interiors, via consumer objects, to urban and regional planning. Drawing on a detailed analysis of key material sites of bourgeois modernism, and interpreting them in conjunction with written sources, this study offers new insights into the history of the bourgeois mindset and its operations in the private and public realms. Thematic chapters examine leitmotifs such as the sense of locality and place, the sense of history and time, and the sense of nature and culture. Yet for all its self-conscious progressivism, German bourgeois modernism was not an inevitable precursor of neo-liberal global capitalism. It remained a hotly contested historical construct, which was constantly re-defined in different geographical and political settings.

High On German Architects written by Ralf Daab and has been published by Loft Media Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Architecture categories.

High On...German Architects presents thirty-two leading German architectural practices and their signature projects. Whether in the areas of housing, commercial, administrative, and public architecture or in the renovation and revitalisation of existing buildings, all have one thing in common: the architects are concerned with sustainable design and reject short-lived trends. This policy manifests itself in minimalistic architecture as well as in the combination of tradition and modernity. The focus is always on a holistic solution that gives expression to an individual attitude to life. To these ends, the respective needs, passions, dreams, and desires of the clients are brought into unity with the specific location and surrounding environment, as well as the climatic and socio-cultural conditions. AUTHOR: Ralf Daab has been in book publishing for 25 years, with Taschen, Koenemann and teNeues where he developed a new book programme and established a worldwide distribution network. With this experience he started his own label daab and published over 200 books on art, architecture, design, photography and fashion. He is the founder of Cologne Catwalk and Cologne Fashion Days. More recently Ralf Daab launched HIGH ON..., a new imprint for innovative art and design books. In Spring 2017 he had his first exhibition of his own photographic artwork at The New Yorker Hotel in Cologne. 450 colour images

Sacred Buildings written by Rudolf Stegers and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-05-16 with Architecture categories.

The building of religious structures represents a rare opportunity for the architect to concentrate on the creation of volume, space, and form. Sacred architecture is far less determined than other building tasks by functional requirements, norms, and standards. As a rule, it is free to unfold as pure architecture. Thus in design terms this building task offers enormous freedoms to the architect. At the same time, however, the special atmospherics of sacred spaces call, on the part of the architect, for a highly sensitive treatment of religion and the relevant cultural and architectural traditions. In a systematic section, this volume introduces the design, technical, and planning fundamentals of building churches, synagogues, and mosques. In its project section, it also presents about seventy realized structures from the last three decades. Drawing upon his in-depth knowledge of the subject and his many years of publishing experience, the author offers a valuable analysis of the conceptual and formal aspects that combine to create the religious impact of spaces (e.g., the ground plan, the shapes of the spaces, the incidence of light, and materiality).

Leadership has never been more important – and divisive – than it is today. The idea and discourse of the leader remains a critical factor in organizational and societal performance, but there is evident tension between the persistent focus on the critical importance of individual leaders and the increasing emphasis on collective leadership. The Routledge Companion to Leadership provides a survey of the contentious and dynamic discipline of leadership. This collection covers key themes in the field, including advances in leadership theory, leadership in a range of contexts and geographies, leadership failure, leadership process, and leadership development. Topics range from micro studies to wider political analyses of leadership, taking in unusual but important aspects such as portrayals of leadership in architecture, media, and science fiction. Contributions from 61 internationally renowned authors from 16 countries make available the full range of perspectives, approaches, and insights on the idea of leadership. Providing both a social sciences and a psychological approach, these go beyond common themes to offer diverse perspectives on such topics as emotion and leadership, portrayals of leadership. This volume situates leadership debates and evidence within contemporary leadership crises, while ensuring that the explorations of the issues are of enduring relevance. With wide and critical coverage of the key topics and potent contextualization of themes in current events, The Routledge Companion to Leadership is the ideal resource for graduate study in leadership.
