Analysis of hundreds of art works from the period provides insights into forgotten landscapes and hidden geographies.After the Napoleonic wars many wealthy British women and men settled along the coast in Liguria and travelled in Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta in search of warmth and health. They established English-speaking colonies of retired clerics, colonial officials, aristocrats and industrialists at places such as Alassio, Bordighera, Sanremo and Portofino. Many were keen artists.This book assesses hundreds of topographical drawings, paintings and photographs of north-west Italy produced by these British visitors and residents in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Through the identification and analysis of these works, scattered today in private and public collections in Italy and Britain, it provides insights into the way Italian landscapes were understood and appreciated. Considered in conjunction with historical photography, maps, archives and fieldwork, they deepen our knowledge of past land management traditions and recover how the contemporary landscape looked. The artists are placed in their intellectual and geographical contexts; and interconnections between British and Italian artists and between topographical art and photography are explored. [English]:Starting from one of the most significant chapters of Leonardo's Libro di Pittura, we hwant to focus on the media - namely on the narrative, descriptive and graphics methodologies together with the techniques adopting during the modern and contemporary age as 'diffusers' of the landscape image - and on the deriving potential models for the enhancement of the historical landscape heritage.Partendo dalla nozione di paesaggio nella storia moderna e contemporanea, nel testo si affrontano le problematiche concernenti l‟evoluzione del suo significato fino al dibattito sulle diverse accezioni recentemente acquisite, con particolare riferimento ai contesti storici urbani. La lezione che si trae dai primi studi di Leonardo sulla percezione del paesaggio naturale e antropizzato, dalle guide e taccuini di viaggio del Cinque e Seicento, fino alla produzione di artisti e viaggiatori tra Sette e Ottocento e al più recente repertorio fotografico o cinematografico, mostra l‟importante ruolo da attribuirsi oggi all‟immagine storica del paesaggio quale strumento per l‟individuazione dell‟identità di un territorio, ormai in buona parte scevra da meri contenuti percettivi e oleografici, e sempre più legata ai fattori umani, storici e sociali, in una parola „culturali‟, che nell‟immagine vanno letti e tradotti. / [Italiano]: Si tratta in effetti di riconoscere nei caratteri „percettibili‟ di un paesaggio, attraverso gli strumenti della storia della città e dell‟iconografia storica, i valori culturali condivisi di un sito o di un insediamento: in tal senso l‟esperienza del Convegno CIRICE 2016 potrà segnare un nuovo passo non solo ai fini di un più consapevole riconoscimento di tali valori attraverso lo studio dei media adottati nella descrizione del paesaggio storico, ma verso un‟azione di tutela volta alla trasmissione e valorizzazione della memoria di quei luoghi.

Il paesaggio urbano rappresenta il prodotto artificiale di ogni cultura che definisce la propria relazione con l’ambiente circostante; non è il mondo che vediamo, ma è la nostra interpretazione di quel mondo e, come tale, richiede la presenza di uno sguardo. Il paesaggio non può, in tal senso, prescindere dagli interrogativi che ogni osservazione comporta: quali sono i messaggi che un determinato paesaggio veicola? Quale è l’ambito culturale nel quale è stato prodotto? Quali fattori ne stabiliscono i codici formali? Domande complesse che ogni immagine più o meno consapevolmente evoca, e alle quali, spesse volte, in qualità di architetti, ci è richiesto di fornire una risposta sintetica. Il problema della forma del paesaggio è, infatti, alla base dei processi di lettura critica che dovrebbero orientare la formazione dell’architetto, specie laddove questa assume (come in molti paesaggi contemporanei) configurazioni complesse, all’interno delle quali risulta ostico orientarsi. I paesaggi tematici affrontati in questo volume nascono dalla constatazione di come il paesaggio sia oggi, spesse volte, poco indagato nei suoi significati più propriamente culturali, scissi e dispersi tra i diversi ambiti e le diverse discipline. Il frastuono prodotto dal dominio pervasivo delle immagini, unito agli effetti imprevisti (e imprevedibili) dei processi di globalizzazione, ci ha obbligati, nel giro di pochi anni, a fare i conti con una serie di paesaggi “difficili”, perché lontani culturalmente, o perché legati a ritmi, dimensioni e tempi profondamente diversi dai nostri, ai quali è necessario fornire una risposta, se si vuole tentare di uscire dalla crisi della nostra professione.

This volume proposes a rich corpus of papers about the 'Other City', a subject only few times dealt with, but worthy of all our attention: it imposes itself on the scene of international modern and contemporary historiography for its undeniable topicality. Throughout history, the city has always had to deal with social 'otherness', i.e. with class privileges and, consequently, with discrimination and marginalization of minorities, of the less well-off, of foreigners, in short, with the differences in status, culture, religion. So that the urban fabric has ended up structuring itself also in function of those inequalities, as well as of the strategic places for the exercise of power, of the political, military or social control, of the spaces for imprisonment, for the sanitary isolation or for the 'temporary' remedy to the catastrophes. From the first portraits of cities, made and diffused at the beginning of the fifteenth century for political exaltation purposes or for religious propaganda and for devotional purposes, which often, through increasingly refined graphic techniques, distort or even deny the true urban image, we reach, at the dawn of contemporary history, the new meaning given by scientific topography and new methods of representation; these latter aimed at revealing the structure and the urban landscape in their objectivity, often unexpected for who had known the city through the filter of 'regime' iconography. The representation of the urban image still shows the contradictions of a community that sometimes includes and even exalts the diversities, other times rejects them, showing the unease of a difficult integration.

[Italiano]:Un tenace luogo comune tramandato da buona parte della storiografia che ha analizzato e raccontato la storia della ferrovia Napoli-Portici riguarda le ragioni della sua costruzione e localizzazione nel territorio vesuviano: molti autori, dall’Unità d’Italia in poi, hanno motivato la scelta del tracciato della linea borbonica con l’assunto secondo cui Ferdinando di Borbone avrebbe costruito la ferrovia per collegare la capitale con la Reggia di Portici. In realtà, non solo risulta poco credibile che un privato, qual era Armando Bayard de la Vingtrie – futuro concessionario della linea –, rischiasse il denaro suo e dei suoi soci per venire incontro ai desideri di Ferdinando, ma, sul piano della testimonianza materiale, negli incartamenti presenti in Archivio di Stato non compare mai – almeno esplicitamente – un simile proposito da parte del re. Il fondamento di queste critiche era forse legato a quello di analoghe considerazioni che erano state elaborate nell’analisi dello sviluppo delle altre strade del regno: critiche, certamente più fondate, mosse a Carlo e a Ferdinando IV, che impiegarono, almeno fino agli anni ’80 del XVIII secolo, gran parte dei fondi statali destinati a costruire e riparare il sistema delle comunicazioni per ampliare e rendere più comodi i percorsi che si trovavano a nord-est di Napoli e che venivano comunemente chiamati ‘camminamenti reali’, utilizzati per le attività venatorie dai due sovrani. Tuttavia, la storia della costruzione della ferrovia nacque da presupposti molto diversi, a partire proprio dalla scelta del tracciato che non fu stabilito dal sovrano, ma proposto, sulla base di nuove considerazioni, dallo stesso concessionario della linea./[English]:The railway from Naples to Nocera with a side branch to Castellammare, whose project was approved in 1836 and which was completed in 1844, represents the first and the most significant stage of the construction of the Bourbon railway infrastructure. The absolute novelty of the enterprise, a work of public utility entrusted in concession to the French engineer Armand Bayard de la Vingtrie, led to the development of new and pressing issues, which concern not only the physical dimension of the Vesuvian coast and its new structure, but also important matters of economy, law, administration, archaeological protection, as well as infrastructure and territory promotion issues. The volume, through the research and comparison of different archival and documentary sources, is intended to reread the history of the first Bourbon railway by bringing together the many aspects that characterized its design, construction and use up to the Unification of Italy. From this study emerges a perspective on the Vesuvian landscape and on its multiple and complex components, integrated in the new perception, intermittent and cursory, offered by the moving train.
