[English]:Starting from one of the most significant chapters of Leonardo's Libro di Pittura, we hwant to focus on the media - namely on the narrative, descriptive and graphics methodologies together with the techniques adopting during the modern and contemporary age as 'diffusers' of the landscape image - and on the deriving potential models for the enhancement of the historical landscape heritage.Partendo dalla nozione di paesaggio nella storia moderna e contemporanea, nel testo si affrontano le problematiche concernenti l‟evoluzione del suo significato fino al dibattito sulle diverse accezioni recentemente acquisite, con particolare riferimento ai contesti storici urbani. La lezione che si trae dai primi studi di Leonardo sulla percezione del paesaggio naturale e antropizzato, dalle guide e taccuini di viaggio del Cinque e Seicento, fino alla produzione di artisti e viaggiatori tra Sette e Ottocento e al più recente repertorio fotografico o cinematografico, mostra l‟importante ruolo da attribuirsi oggi all‟immagine storica del paesaggio quale strumento per l‟individuazione dell‟identità di un territorio, ormai in buona parte scevra da meri contenuti percettivi e oleografici, e sempre più legata ai fattori umani, storici e sociali, in una parola „culturali‟, che nell‟immagine vanno letti e tradotti. / [Italiano]: Si tratta in effetti di riconoscere nei caratteri „percettibili‟ di un paesaggio, attraverso gli strumenti della storia della città e dell‟iconografia storica, i valori culturali condivisi di un sito o di un insediamento: in tal senso l‟esperienza del Convegno CIRICE 2016 potrà segnare un nuovo passo non solo ai fini di un più consapevole riconoscimento di tali valori attraverso lo studio dei media adottati nella descrizione del paesaggio storico, ma verso un‟azione di tutela volta alla trasmissione e valorizzazione della memoria di quei luoghi.

Da una parte il campo delle Digital Humanities apre nuove prospettive per studiare l'immagine della città prima, durante e dopo la guerra, dall’altro le tecnologie digitali impegnano studiosi e ricercatori di varie discipline: in particolare nell’ambito del disegno viene esplorato il ruolo della rappresentazione nella formulazione dei progetti urbani di difesa e nella documentazione degli eventi bellici e delle tracce lasciate dai conflitti, mentre nell’ambito del restauro vengono approfondite le sfide teoriche e pratiche imposte dai danni arrecati dai conflitti ai centri storici, passando in rassegna casi studio, soluzioni e dibattiti relativi alla conservazione del patrimonio urbano coinvolto in azioni di guerra, con un'attenzione particolare all'identità e alla memoria collettiva./[English]: At such a significant moment in European and world history, this volume aims to be a collection of scientific reflections about the relationships between political choices, military actions and the physiognomy of cities and the urban landscape, about the evolution of defence structures and techniques, about the representation of war and its effects on the urban image, and about the recovery of the traces of city memory. On the one hand the field of Digital Humanities opens up new perspectives to study the image of the city before, during and after the war, on the other hand digital technologies engage academics and researchers from various disciplines: In particular, in the area of drawing, the role of representation in the formulation of urban defence projects and in the documentation of wartime events and the traces left behind by conflicts is explored, while in the area of conservation, the theoretical and practical challenges imposed by the damage caused by conflicts to historic centres are explored, reviewing case studies, solutions and debates relating to the conservation of urban heritage involved in wartime actions, with a focus on identity and collective memory.

Italian writer and filmmaker Gianni Celati’s 1989 philosophical travelogue Towards the River’s Mouth explores perception, memory, place and space as it recounts a series of journeys across the Po River Valley in northern Italy. The book seeks to document the “new Italian landscape” where divisions between the urban and rural were being blurred into what Celati terms “a new variety of countryside where one breathes an air of urban solitude.” Celati traveled by train, by bus, and on foot, at times with photographer Luigi Ghirri, at others exploring on his own without predetermined itineraries, taking notes on the places he encountered, watching and listening to people in stations, fields, bars, houses, squares, and hotels. In this way the book took shape as Celati traveled and wrote, gathering and rewriting his notes into “stories of observation” (9). Celati attempts to find meaning by seeking the uncertain limits of our ability to discern everyday surroundings. “Every observation,” as he puts it, “needs liberate itself from the familiar codes it carries, to go adrift in the middle of all things not understood, in order to arrive at an outlet, where it must feel lost.” At the forefront of the then-nascent spatial turn in the humanities, Towards the River’s Mouth is a key text of what in recent years has been variously termed literary cartography, literary geography, and spatial poetics. Its call to carefully and affectionately examine our surroundings while attempting to step back from habitual ways of perceiving and moving through space, has resonated as much with literary scholars and other writers as with geographers and architects. Apulian limestones constitute the historic building constructions of the Puglia region (in the south of Italy) named trulli (representing an outstanding universal value for UNESCO), but also other stone buildings of the well-known Itria Valley. Trulli are drywall (mortarless) constructions made of roughly worked limestone blocks collected from neighbouring fields. The limestone for trulli is quarried from different Apulian localities and, together with another local lithotype, represents the stone heritage of the Itria Valley. This book begins with an introduction to the region of southern Italy where trulli and other typical stone architecture can be found. The Itria Valley with its towns and landscape and the town of Alberobello are described from an architectural point of view. The second section describes the different examples of building constructions in local stone of the Itria Valley, focusing on ancient and contemporary quarries. In this part petrographic and physical mechanical characteristics of the main kind of limestones are reported and discussed. The third part focuses on the main examples of stone architecture of Itria Valley, distinguishing the historical rural buildings from the other historical civil ones. In this section particular attention is given to best practices of evaluation action, protection rules and restoration methods for stone heritage in Itria Valley and Alberobello. This book serves as a useful source of information to geologists, archaeologists, architects, historians and stone industry operators specifically, and to academic and non-academic communities, travellers, and tourism industry operators in general. The book will also be of interest to students, researchers, and rock enthusiasts spanning all age groups and academic levels.

La necessità di approfondimento ha riguardato azioni e temi plurimi: esaminare il retroterra del progetto della Mostra d’Oltremare, individuato nei nuovi studi non soltanto nel dibattito cittadino su un adeguato spazio per le esposizioni da collocarsi preferibilmente ad occidente, ma anche in interessanti e autoriali soluzioni preliminari, finora sconosciute, che hanno condizionato la conformazione definitiva; mettere in luce la specificità dei singoli elementi del complesso, sopravvissuti o scomparsi, senza limitarsi ai casi più noti e celebrati, ma anche a quelli meno indagati e più difficili da interpretare, senza trascurare gli spazi aperti e il verde; approfondire anche quelle architetture non interpretabili nella linea della modernità, e tuttavia ugualmente emblematiche di quella fase, per cui meritevoli di conservazione; non limitare l’attenzione alla fase eroica, ancorché discutibile, della prima fondazione, ma analizzare con la medesima acribia anche quelle successive, a partire dalla problematica ricostruzione e risignificazione del Dopoguerra; non arrestarsi alla pur vasta ricognizione sistematica di fonti indirette finora non indagate – dai tanti archivi, a scala non solo cittadina ma nazionale, ai quotidiani e alla stampa coeva – ma interrogare con metodo scientifico le stesse consistenze materiali degli edifici; infine, non direzionare lo sguardo solo sul passato e sulla storia della Mostra e delle singole architetture, ma proiettarlo sul futuro individuando le migliori strategie di recupero, restauro e conservazione./[English]: The present work was born with a twofold objective: to go deeper into the knowledge of an urban landmark and, at the same time, to outline a future scenario aligned to its value, starting from a proper recovery of the multiform and valuable architecture that compose it. The deepening arises from the need to study multiple actions and themes: to examine the background project of the Mostra d'Oltremare identified in the new studies, not only in the city debate on a suitable space for exhibitions to be preferably located to the west, but also in authorial preliminary solutions, until now unknown, which have conditioned the final conformation; to highlight the specificity of the single elements of the complex, the survived and the disappeared ones, without limiting the study to the best known and most celebrated cases, but also to the less investigated and difficult to interpret ones, without neglecting the open spaces and the green areas; to deepen also those architectures that cannot be interpreted in the line of modernity but equally emblematic of that phase, therefore worthy of preservation; not limiting attention to the heroic, albeit debatable, phase of the first foundation, but analyzing with the same acumen the subsequent ones, starting with the problematic reconstruction and redefinition of the post-war period; not stopping at the systematic reconnaissance of indirect sources that have not been investigated until now - from the many archives, not only on a city but also on a national scale, to the newspapers and the press of the time - but questioning the same material consistency of the buildings with a scientific method; finally, not focusing only on the past and on the history of the Exhibition and of the single architectures, but projecting it into the future by identifying the best strategies of recovery, restoration and preservation.

Introdotti da saggi generali a firma di autorevoli studiosi di Leonardo e del Rinascimento, i contributi specifici della prima parte del volume riguardano, tra le altre testimonianze: gli incunaboli della Biblioteca Nazionale relativi ai trattati un tempo presenti nella biblioteca di Leonardo e che ispirarono i suoi studi; il Codice Corazza, apografo vinciano seicentesco pubblicato per la prima volta da Buccaro sotto la guida di Pedretti, unitamente ai documenti del fondo Corazza della stessa Biblioteca; il Codice Fridericiano, apografo del XVI secolo dal Trattato della Pittura di Leonardo, acquisito nel 2016 su proposta di Buccaro e Vecce dal Centro per le Biblioteche dell’Ateneo di Napoli Federico II; il Foglietto del Belvedere dell’Archivio Pedretti, il cui studio è stato affrontato in dettaglio da Buccaro; i Vari disegni di Giovanni Antonio Nigrone (BNN, Ms. XII.G.60-61, ca. 1598-1603), recanti un progetto di trattato di ingegneria meccanica e idraulica di ispirazione vinciana rimasto manoscritto. Nella seconda parte del volume vengono analizzati per la prima volta i grafici di architettura e urbanistica contenuti nei due album cinquecenteschi che compongono l’inedito Codice Tarsia (BNN, Mss. XII.D.1, XII.D.74), vero e proprio ‘Libro di disegni’ risalente al XVI secolo (ca. 1540-98) conservato nella Biblioteca Nazionale di Napoli e un tempo appartenente alla raccolta del principe Spinelli di Tarsia. Questo ricco repertorio documentario diede vita, sul volgere del XVI secolo, al progetto editoriale di Nicola Antonio Stigliola, filosofo e ingegnere nolano: la raccolta contiene splendidi rilievi di antichità e progetti di edifici in gran parte di ambito vignolesco redatti per la committenza farnesiana, oltre a disegni di città fortificate italiane ed europee di estremo interesse e bellezza, in cui è evidente l’influenza degli studi di Leonardo in materia di ingegneria militare. Introduced by some general essays by important scholars on Leonardo and the Renaissance, the papers of the first part of the book, among other testimonies, deal with: the incunabula of the National Library relating to the treaties once present in Leonardo's library that inspired his training; the Codice Corazza, a seventeenth-century apograph published by Buccaro with the advice of Pedretti in 2011, together with manuscript from Corazza collection in the same library; the Codice Fridericiano, a sixteenth-century apograph from Leonardo's Treatise on Painting, acquired in 2016 by the Center for Libraries of University of Naples Federico II on a proposal by Buccaro and Vecce; the Foglietto del Belvedere of the Foundation Pedretti Archive, studied in detail by Buccaro; the Vari disegni by Giovanni Antonio Nigrone (BNN, Ms. XII.G.60-61, ab. 1598-1603), containing an unpublished project for a mechanical and hydraulic engineering treatise inspired by Leonardo’s studies. In the second part of the book, the architecture and urban planning graphics contained in the two sixteenth-century albums of the unpublished Codice Tarsia (BNN, Mss. XII.D.1, XII.D.74) have been analyzed for the first time. It a real ‘Book of drawings’ dating back to the 16th century (ab. 1540-98), once belonging to the Prince Spinelli of Tarsia library. This rich documentary repertoire inspired, at the end of that century, the editorial project by Nicola Antonio Stigliola, a philosopher and engineer from Nola: this collection contains some beautiful drawings of Antiquities and architectural projects largely related to Vignola’s works for the Farnese family, as well as very interesting drawings of Italian and European fortified cities, in which the influence of Leonardo's studies about military engineering is evident. This Codex, carefully studied and digitally cataloged for Manus Online by scholras of CIRICE and of the National Library, is a precious testimony of the spread of Tuscan and Roman Renaissance in the Southern Italy.
