Dans un precedent numero d'Archives Juives, nous avons consacre un dossier a l'art juif Certains de nos lecteurs ont exprime leur etonnement. Que signifie cette expression, nous ont-ils demande? Qu'il y ait des artistes juifs, personne n'en doute, meme si parfois leur sentiment identitaire est vacillant, voire inexistant. Qu'il y ait un art propre au judaisme, on peut l'admettre. Mais il ne serait pas pertinent d'evoquer, sans precautions oratoires, sans distinctions subtiles, sans nuances, un art juif, comme l'on parle d'un art gothique ou d'un art roman. La querelle ne manque pas d'interet. Elle ne cessera pas de rebondir.Le dossier que nous presentons dans le present numero a pour theme les metiers des Juifs, et non les metiers juifs. Il est de notoriete publique qu'a la veille de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, bon nombre de Juifs etrangers ou recemment immigres en France exercaient le metier de maroquinier, de tailleur, de casquettier, de fourreur. Bien des Juifs d'origine roumaine pratiquaient la medecine. Les maquignons juifs n'etaient pas rares en Alsace. Les bouchers tenaient une place particuliere, suivant qu'ils contribuaient ou non au respect de la cacherout. Dans le monde du commerce, en gros ou au detail, les Juifs donnaient l'impression d'etre partout presents. Pendant l'Occupation, c'etait l'un des leitmotiv des champions de l'antisemitisme qui tantot cherchaient a stigmatiser la communaute juive, tantot reclamaient des interdits professionnels ou des numerus clausus. A la verite, aucune de ces professions n'etait et n'est reservee aux Juifs. La liste serait longue des metiers que les Juifs ont exerces ou continuent d'exercer. Elle pourrait faire croire a une sorte de destinee, a une marque de la Providence qui echapperait a toute investigation historique. Cette interpretation n'est pas la notre. Les historiens cherchent avant tout a expliquer les contraintes, les hasards, les traditions. Rien ni personne n'a decouvert dans le livre des siecles que la vocation des Juifs etait de travailler les peaux et les cuirs, de piquer a la machine, de vendre des tissus ou de jouer du violon. Pas plus que rien ni personne ne fera du ramonage des cheminees la vocation des petits Savoyards.Voila pourquoi nous avons retenu des articles qui ne recouvrent evidemment pas toute la realite socio-professionnelle du monde juif, mais qui posent les questions fondamentales et tentent d'apporter des reponses. Dans le meme temps, nous avons voulu aller plus loin que l'enumeration insipide ou la simple description. Il y a des professions qui ressemblent a des vocations. Le rabbin ou le hazan ne remplissent pas leurs obligations comme d'autres gerent un fonds de commerce. Les solidarites professionnelles entrainent des solidarites ideologiques, et vice versa. Au dela de ces evidences, notre dossier abordent les annees qui ont precede la Shoah. C'est une periode que l'on connait de mieux en mieux, dans laquelle des influences diverses fusionnent pour donner naissance, lentement, a une communaute, encore mal definie, riche toutefois d'apports exterieurs, totalement engagee dans le processus d'integration. Une fois de plus, l'histoire des Juifs s'inscrit dans l'histoire de la France et lui confere une profondeur nouvelle.ANDRE KASPI
