This monograph presents a critical analysis of the body of historical writing on the history of the Jewish population in Poznania in the era of the Prussian rule (1772-1918 ), including the identification and verification of the attendant myths and stereotypes. The interest in the Polish edition of this book was considerable. Similarly noticeable was the academic response to the title, despite its ostensibly local subject matter. While this study was also noticed abroad, the language barrier has severely impeded its impact. This prompted the author to work towards the English edition of this book, hoping it would find its way into global academic circulation. Some changes and additions were made in the English version. It includes an updated survey of scholarship on this subject of the past twenty years, a response to reviews engaging with the Polish edition, and some general reflections on the evolution of historiography in the recent years.

This book examines cultural heritage law in both its public and private modalities, focusing on the search for new solutions in national legislations. Both tangible and intangible cultural heritage pose challenges for national legislation regarding the legal histories of the respective countries, obligations deriving from international law, and the independence of respective national searches for a tailored protection model. Although the concept of cultural heritage transcends civil law regulation and property rights, it must be considered when attempting to establish any coherent cultural heritage protection system. In national legislation, we can now observe an increased interest in leveraging civil law or private law to strengthen cultural heritage protection systems. This book looks beyond public and private law on cultural heritage in order to address its complex status as a legal hybrid. Further, the book shows how current problems in the international debate are mirrored in national legislation. Poland is used as a practical example, while also referring to other countries’ solutions as well as EU and international law instruments. This approach enables the reader to examine the creation of national legislation at the operational level and provides a template for all national lawyers concerning current challenges and emerging trends. Książka ukazuje dzieje archiwów polskich działających zarówno na ziemiach polskich, jak i poza granicami kraju w latach 1944–1989. Cezurą końcową jest rok, w którym odbyły się pierwsze po II wojnie światowej częściowo demokratyczne wybory (ich wyniki stały się początkiem końca Polskiej Rzeczypospolitej Ludowej). Pracę podzielono na rozdziały, w których kolejno przedstawiono granice i ustrój Polski po 1945 r., organizację i zadania archiwów polskich do 1951 r., ich działalność po tym roku (czyli po wydaniu nowego dekretu o archiwach państwowych), a następnie po reformie administracyjnej 1975 r. i uchwaleniu w 1983 r. nowej ustawy o narodowym zasobie archiwalnym. W dalszych jej częściach omówiono państwowy zasób archiwalny, m.in. jego gromadzenie, opracowanie, udostępnianie i popularyzację, a także zasób narastający i archiwa zakładowe, budownictwo archiwalne, problem kadr archiwalnych i ich kształcenia oraz – skrótowo – działalność naukową archiwów. Rozważania kończy rzut oka na dzieje i zasób najważniejszych polskich archiwów państwowych w tym okresie oraz appendix, w którym przedstawiono sylwetkę profesora Andrzeja Tomczaka, przez prawie całe dojrzałe życie związanego zawodowo i naukowo z tworzoną po II wojnie światowej archiwistyką polską.

This open access book addresses the protection of privacy and personality rights in public records, records management, historical sources, and archives; and historical and current access to them in a broad international comparative perspective. Considering the question "can archiving pose a security risk to the protection of sensitive data and human rights?", it analyses data security and presents several significant cases of the misuse of sensitive personal data, such as census data or medical records. It examines archival inflation and the minimisation and reduction of data in public records and archives, including data anonymisation and pseudonymisation, and the risks of deanonymisation and reidentification of persons. The book looks at post-mortem privacy protection, the relationship of the right to know and the right to be forgotten and introduces a specific model of four categories of the right to be forgotten. In its conclusion, the book presents a set of recommendations for archives and records management. Mikulas Ctvrtnik, Ph.D. visiting assistant professor at Charles University in Prague, and assistant professor at Jan Evangelista Purkyne University in Usti nad Labem.
