In 1942 a Catalina crew of 210 Squadron, based at Sullom Voe in the Shetlands, was selected to carry out a series of highly secret operations, including a flight to the North Pole. The sorties were associated with a Norwegian expedition from Britain to Spitsbergen, to deny the use of the territory to the enemy. The flights made by the crew were frequently over twenty-four hours in length and reached the limits of human endurance, in conditions of extreme cold. Later, the squadron was detached to North Russia, to provide cover for the convoys taking vital supplies to the Allies on the Eastern Front. The navigator of the crew, Ernest Schofield, retained logs of most of these sorties. Together with other survivors of the crew, accounts from German sources and research carried out by Roy Conyers Nesbit, he recreated these little-known events, in detailed and accurate narrative that ends in tragedy.

Airmen Against The Sea is the fourth in a series of ADTIC studies to determine how military personnel survived under meegency conditions in variaous parts of the world. Its predecessors, 999 Survived, Sun, Sand and Survival, and Down In the North, dealt with survival respectively in the Southwest pacific Tropics, in ther African Deserts, and in the Arctic. This study concerns survival at sea dn, like its predecessors, employs the topical approach. It is not a water survival manual, but is a factual report of what happened to men who bailed out or ditched at sea, and whose only refuge for days on end was a rubber lifeaft. Under such topical headings as bailout versus ditching, survival equipment, the lifeaft, food, hazards, injuries, morale, and many others, the experiences of the survivors themselves are emphasized. The result is a new and fresh insight into the problems of survival at sea which will eb of inteest to all those wh ofly over water, and of particular value to those concerned directly with rescue operations, with water survival training, and with the development of survival materiel.

The true life story of Canadian Arctic bush pilot Don C. Braun is must reading for aviation fans everywhere. His fireside narrative plus 32 pages of photos capture the spirit and adventures of the first man to land a wheeled aircraft at the North Pole. Born on a farm near St. Cloud, Minnesota, in 1913, Don built and flew a glider as a teenager and then operated an aircraft repair shop at Harlem Airport in Chicago in the 1930's. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and flew the North West Staging Route from Edmonton to Alaska. His first bush flying was in an RCAF Norseman during the war years, and he went on to become one of the best known and most respected Canadian Arctic bush pilots of his time. He joined with Max Ward in getting Wardair off the ground as a small charter operation out of Yellowknife in the 1950's. While Max grew Wardair into one of the world's premier charter airlines, Don preferred the cockpit and the North. His stories of close calls and life in the North always spoke his mind, and this handsome book does no less. The Artic Fox, as he was known in the North, was superbly resourceful, bailing himself out of tight situations almost daily in his days of High Arctic flying. A great pilot and an even better mechanic, Don shares details aviation fans will know and love. This is your book, pilots and all others who love flying.
