In the 21st century, the Internet has made publishers of anyone with a laptop or mobile phone. In response many observers have said that traditional media -- defined as newspapers, radio, television, cable TV, magazines and other print publications -- are in a death spiral if not already dead. In a series of articles ranging from academic journals to popular print media, opinion surveys and government reports, Are Traditional Media Dead?, investigates this question, exploring: Does journalism have one foot in the grave? How traditional media can fight back How new media has impacted traditional media. How journalism can change to adapt to digital age? Can older media survive?

Community Journalism Midst Media Revolution written by Sue Robinson and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-14 with Social Science categories.

This edited volume documents the changes taking place in local community practices globally. Digital technologies and globalization have forced evolutions in how we go about producing and consuming journalism, and these essays empirically and theoretically advance the scholarly conversations about those trends. What does it mean to serve the information needs of a community in a digitized social world where so many of our ties – weak and strong – are at least partially maintained in virtual worlds? With authors and data from all over the world, this work celebrates a fundamental connectedness to citizens and their community and renews the emphasis on home as a mandate for any locally focused news organization. The contributions to this volume explore the "flows" within both digital spaces and geographic places that are an important foreground to any conversation about what is community today. Several terms are coined and explored in the volume, including "geosocial journalism" and "reciprocal journalism" that account for the essentiality of information sharing in global public realms to inspire feelings of community belonging. Other chapters include a review of Patch.com – one of the largest grassroots, digital platforms for journalism – a survey of how Norwegian community media organizations are adapting to digital worlds, how Swedish citizen sites operate, and the ethics of community journalists to advocate for their citizenry regarding digital matters. Venturing towards both optimism and dismay, the collection argues that understandings of communal borders have expanded. So even if journalists cannot reach the current locals (such as in Africa as one chapter relates) or globally transient locals, digital technologies can help relocate fractured community into a less problematic, virtual space. This requires commitment on the part of both journalists and citizens to preserve those connections, utilize those technologies, and exercise those fundamental principles of community journalism that go back more than half a century. This book was originally published as a special issue of Journalism Practice.

American Carnival written by Neil Henry and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-05-29 with Art categories.

In this vividly written, compelling narrative, award-winning journalist Neil Henry confronts the crisis facing professional journalism in this era of rapid technological transformation. American Carnival combines elements of memoir with extensive media research to explore critical contemporary issues ranging from reporting on the Iraq War, to American race relations, to the exploitation of the image of journalism by advertisers and politicians. Drawing on significant currents in U.S. media and social history, Henry argues that, given the amount of fraud in many institutions in American life today, the decline of journalistic professionalism sparked by the economic challenge of New Media poses especially serious implications for democracy. As increasingly alarming stories surface about unethical practices, American Carnival makes a stirring case for journalism as a calling that is vital to a free society, a profession that is more necessary than ever in a digital age marked by startling assaults on the cultural primacy of truth.

Hybrid Media Activism written by Emiliano Treré and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-07 with Political Science categories.

This book is an extensive investigation of the complexities, ambiguities and shortcomings of contemporary digital activism. The author deconstructs the reductionism of the literature on social movements and communication, proposing a new conceptual vocabulary based on practices, ecologies, imaginaries and algorithms to account for the communicative complexity of protest movements. Drawing on extensive fieldwork on social movements, collectives and political parties in Spain, Italy and Mexico, this book disentangles the hybrid nature of contemporary activism. It shows how activists operate merging the physical and the digital, the human and the non-human, the old and the new, the internal and the external, the corporate and the alternative. The author illustrates the ambivalent character of contemporary digital activism, demonstrating that media imaginaries can be either used to conceal authoritarianism, or to reimagine democracy. The book looks at both side of algorithmic power, shedding light on strategies of repression and propaganda, and scrutinizing manifestations of algorithms as appropriation and resistance. The author analyses the way in which digital activism is not an immediate solution to intricate political problems, and argues that it can only be effective when a set of favourable social, political, and cultural conditions align. Assessing whether digital activism can generate and sustain long-term processes of social and political change, this book will be of interest to students and scholars researching radical politics, social movements, digital activism, political participation and current affairs more generally.

Millennial Rules written by T. Scott Gross and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-08 with Business & Economics categories.

In today’s digital world, the Baby Boomers and Generation X are giving way to a new generation of consumers: the Millennials. These tech-savvy consumers—bearing the mantra “my way, right way, why pay?”—want quick, customizable service that is negotiated on their terms and delivers great value. And when Millennials want help, they want it now; when they don’t want help, they expect the sales staff to be invisible. In Millennial Rules: How to Sell, Serve, Surprise, and Stand Out in a Digital World, veteran business owner T. Scott Gross demystifies the newest generation and shares how businesses can meet and exceed Millennials’ expectations to make the sale—without resorting to tricks and gimmicks. Invisible selling is built on ethical, common-sense business practices that yield success across the board, regardless of niche or industry. Armed with research into generational consumer preferences, humor, and a wealth of experience, Gross tackles the looming question, “How can you disappear and still deliver quality service?” The answer, he suggests, is by emphasizing serving above selling, a strategy that will make organizations successful not just with Millennials, but with all generations. For better or for worse, the Millennials aren’t going anywhere. By learning what has changed—and what hasn’t—you can cater to the wants and needs of each generation and still come out on top. Millennial Rules reveals the ins and outs of Millennials not only as customers but as employees, demonstrating what lifestyle demands to watch out for and why Millennials might be a valuable addition to your team. Rather than proposing a total revolution in business, Gross reinforces a pattern of success by making readers aware of what they’re already doing right—and how to do more of it.
