As the world experiences heightened levels of violent conflict and polarization, understanding what peacebuilding efforts are “effective” becomes all the more pressing. This groundbreaking edited volume brings together a diverse, global group of practitioners, researchers, and peacebuilders to grapple with urgent questions and challenges related to defining and assessing peacebuilding effectiveness. Sections of the book engage in critical reflection on what peacebuilding effectiveness is and who gets to decide, provide practical examples and case studies of the successes and failures of assessing peacebuilding work, and support innovative strategies and tools to move the field forward. Chapters reflect a variety of perspectives on peacebuilding effectiveness and methods—quantitative, qualitative, and participatory—to evaluate peacebuilding efforts, with particular attention to approaches that center those local to the peacebuilding process. Practitioners and policymakers alike will find useful arguments and approaches for evaluating peacebuilding activities and making the case for funding such efforts. This book aims to catalyze conversation and action among peacebuilding practitioners, academics, donors, and those directly affected by peacebuilding efforts about how we define and measure effectiveness.

The rapid worldwide growth in migration, asylum seekers and refugees and reactions to this, the expansion of media and technology, political and economic changes at international and local levels are both challenges and opportunities for research in applied linguistics. This book presents 23 articles by key researchers exploring the ways in which applied linguistics can play a role making a difference in people’s lives. It is a timely publication when access to powerful discourses is increasingly an issue for many of the world’s populations. The book showcases the contribution of applied linguists working in such areas as language teaching and learning, policy development, discourse analysis, language assessment, language development and bilingualism in the UK, Asia and Australasia. The book is aimed at teachers, teacher educators, undergraduate and postgraduate students who are working in the areas of the applied linguistics and language education, but also to anyone with an interest in language and the impact that it has on our lives. “The whole idea is that so many of us live our lives applying linguistics and yet we don’t even think about it”. – Shirley Brice Heath, in Heath and Kramsch (2004, 82): Individuals, Institutions and the Uses of Literacy: Shirley Brice Heath and Claire Kramsch in Conversation. Journal of Applied Linguistics, 1(1):75-94.

What do people do all day? What did women and men do to make a living in early modern Europe, and what did their work mean? As this book shows, the meanings depended both on the worker and on the context. With an innovative analytic method that is yoked to a specially-built database of source materials, this book revises many received opinions about the history of gender and work in Europe. The applied verb-oriented method finds the 'work verbs' that appear incidentally in a wide variety of early modern sources and then analyzes the context in which they appear. By tying information technologies and computer-assisted analysis to the analytic powers--both quantitative and qualitative--of professional historians, the method gets much closer to a participatory observation of the micro-patterns of early modern life than was once believed possible. This book directly addresses a number of broad problems often debated by historians of gender and early modern Europe. First, it discusses the problem of assessing more accurately the incidence, character and division of work. Second, it analyzes the configurations of work and human difference. Third, it deals with the extent to which work practices created notions of difference--gender difference but also other forms of difference--and, conversely, to what extent work practices contributed to notions of sameness and gender convergence. Finally, it studies the impact of processes of change. Drawing on sources from Sweden, the authors show the importance of multiple employment, the openness of early modern households, the significance of marriage and marital status, the gendered nature of specific tasks, and the ways in which state formation and commercialization were entangled in people's everyday lives.

Within the overlapping fields of the sociology of sport, physical education and health education, the use of critical theories and the critical research paradigm has grown in scope. Yet what social impact has this research had? This book considers the capacity of critical research and associated social theory to play an active role in challenging social injustices or at least in ‘making a difference’ within health and physical education (HPE) and sporting contexts. It also examines how the use of different social theories impacts sport policies, national curricula and health promotion activities, as well as the practices of HPE teaching and sport training and competition. Critical Research in Sport, Health and Physical Education is a valuable resource for academics and students working in the fields of research methods, sociology of sport, physical education and health.
