La ricerca si propone d’illustrare, con approccio prevalentemente macro economico, la situazione economica e sociale esistente e d’individuare le cause, di lungo e di breve periodo, che l’hanno determinata. Il lavoro molto ampio ed approfondito, riveste un grande interesse in vista delle future scelte nel e peril territorio regionale, al fine di superare il gap di progettualità e di capacità esecutiva che sempre più divide le due “Toscane” (quella costiera e quella interna) e le rende entrambe più fragili economicamente. Ma data l’importanza di questa regione, ciò che la riguarda coinvolge necessariamente l’intero Paese. Le consequenziali proposte di soluzione dei problemi individuati, sono destinate a riattivare un processo di sviluppo economico del territorio, da troppo tempo, purtroppo, in situazione di stallo. In tutto il mondo le aree costiere sono più ricche e popolose di quelle interne. In Toscana, NO! Perché? A livello mondiale l’80%delle merci sono trasportate via mare. In Toscana, NO! (solo 1%). Perché? Questo studio parte dall’analisi dei principali fattori demografici (popolazione, istruzione, occupazione), dei principali indicatori macroeconomici (Pil, azione economica istituzionale, mercato), dello stato delle infrastrutture (strade, ferrovie, porti, aeroporti, etc.). Si comincia dal livello nazionale, per scendere alle macroaree economiche (Nord, Centro, Sud -Isole). Nell’ambito dell’area Centro, si focalizza l’attenzione sulla regione Toscana e successivamente, sulle Province comprese nell’area costiera toscana: Massa – Carrara, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno, Grosseto. Si fanno confronti tra i diversi livelli geografici. L’Area di riferimento dello studio ha il suo nucleo centrale nell’Area pisana e livornese, la Versilia e la piana di Lucca (Lucca e dintorni) che, sul piano industriale, su quello turistico (turismo residenziale) e finanziario, si integrano perfettamente, ma essa comprende anche la Provincia di Massa – Carrara e la Garfagnana, per continuità territoriale e come “trait d’union” con la Liguria e l’Emilia. Inoltre comprende la provincia di Grosseto così da tenere unita la storica area maremmana. La sua dimensione complessiva (superficie Kmq. 11.091,79, popolazione complessiva 1.571.000 abitanti, densità di popolazione pari a 141,64 abitante per Kmq.) l’avvicina alle regioni di 1° classe. La parte Italia costituisce il quadro d’insieme. Lo studio delle macro aree nazionali, ridotte a tre Nord, Centro, Sud, è dedicato ad individuare i punti di forza e di debolezza di ognuna. Il “cuore” della ricerca concerne l’economia della regione Toscana (Topscana). A livello provinciale, l’analisi economica mette a fuoco le potenzialità e l’interesse di ognuna alla cooperazione. La parte conclusiva riguarda il calcolo sintetico di un Indice di Potenzialità Economica (IPE) per consentire raffronti nel tempo e nello spazio. Tra le tante proposte, la più innovativa è quella che, se adottata, consentirebbe al Paese di ridurre, in un sol colpo, il Debito Pubblico di circa 600/700 miliardi, modificando interamente il quadro politico – istituzionale europeo e nazionale.

In the 20th century, water management focused on the local scale of interest. In the 21st century we will be facing changes in the quantity of our water cycle. The forces behind these new challenges are industrialisation, population growth and an insufficiently swift response to climatic change. The magnitude and distribution of global changes are not exactly predictable, because we live in an ever-changing environment and are faced with extreme and interacting processes, which all are not yet sufficiently understood. Therefore, to shoulder this task, hydrology should embrace more integrative and interdisciplinary approaches and achieve more flexibility in assessments and decisions. To better confront this challenge, catchment-related solutions are more important than local solutions, to satisfy the water demand of agriculture, ecosystems, industry and the private sector. It is wise to keep in mind that the environment has a "sustainable memory" and our knowledge about attenuation capacities and resilience of the environment is still low.

The role of water in our communities, from local to regional and right up to global levels, poses a series of key questions about climate change, about the anthropogenic impact on the environment, and about all the interconnected actions and events that affect the availability and quality of the resource. All these questions share a common demand for more scientific knowledge and information. In this particular context the disciplinary boundaries are fading, and there is a growing need to create broader connections and wider collaborative interdisciplinary groups, aimed at building an integrated knowledge-base to serve not only stakeholders but also the whole of society. Only in this way can we hope to respond effectively to the challenges and changing dynamics of human-hydrologic systems. The nEU-Med project is part of the Horizon 2020 programme, in the ERC Advanced project category. It began in October 2015 and will be concluded in October 2020. The University of Siena is the host institution of the project. The project is focussed upon two Tuscan riverine corridors leading from the Gulf of Follonica in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Colline Metallifere. It aims to document and analyze the form and timeframe of economic growth in this part of the Mediterranean, which took place between the 7th and the 12thc. Central to this is an understanding of the processes of change in human settlements, in the natural and farming landscapes in relation to the exploitation of resources, and in the implementation of differing political strategies. This volume brings together the research presented at the first nEUMed workshop, held in Siena on 11-12 April, 2017. The aim of the workshop was to draw up an initial survey of research and related work on the project, one and a half years after its inception. The project is composed of several research units. Each unit covers an aspect of the interdisciplinary research underpinning the nEU-Med project, each with their own methodology. For this first volume of results, it was decided not to give an account of all the work carried out within all the units, but to select those lines of investigation which, at the end of the first year and a half, have made it possible to articulate and develop an interdisciplinary research strategy.

Il fortuito ed eccezionale ritrovamento nell’estate 2003, al di sopra della volta absidale della chiesa di Sant’Antimo, di 680 forme ceramiche ha rappresentato l’occasione per avviare, in contemporanea al loro recupero, lo studio dell’intero complesso monumentale, al tempo in corso di restauro per la realizzazione di appartamenti privati. I nuovi ed importanti dati desunti dalla ricerca sul complesso religioso, edificato nel primo cinquantennio del XIII secolo, hanno reso possibile l’approfondimento e l’ampliamento delle conoscenze sulla storia di Piombino, importante scalo marittimo nel Medioevo e della Val di Cornia. Ciò ha consentito di tracciare nuovi scenari storici all’interno dell’importante fase di indebolimento delle locali signorie, dello sviluppo degli organismi comunali e della tessitura di complesse politiche di controllo di Pisa in questo territorio nel Basso Medioevo.

Il seminario discute le problematiche connesse alle chiese rurali e castrensi del Medioevo toscano. Il livello regionale dell'analisi permette quindi un proficuo confronto tra le numerose indagini stratigrafiche sulle chiese rurali toscane, grazie anche alla presenza di numerosi discussants nazionali ed internazionali di grande spessore. Obiettivo del seminario era di non considerare le chiese come fenomeni isolati, avulsi dal loro contesto storico, culturale e territoriale. Gli edifici religiosi sono quindi posti strettamente in connessione con il territorio nei secoli di formazione dei paesaggi medievali della Toscana. Fondamentali risultano quindi le relazioni con i paesaggi tardo antichi e medievali, al fine di coglierne le trasformazioni nonché i rapporti con i villaggi d’altura e i castelli in via di formazione. Gli edifici religiosi sono quindi intesi come una delle tante espressioni della società: scavare chiese come scavare castelli, villaggi, abitazioni, strutture produttive, campi fossili, nel tentativo di rimettere insieme tutti i pezzi superstiti per la comprensione di ciò che è stato.
