Excerpt from Argentina, Past Present Probably the best excuse for a second edition is that the first has been sold out. If so, this may be alleged with justice as an explanation in the present case. Another reason, equally potent, is that the production of this new edition makes possible the inclusion of the coloured illustrations by Mr. Christ mas additions much welcomed by the author, since they cannot fail to serve as an invaluable aid to the text. Excerpt from Argentine: Past, Present and Future; A Lecture It is a significant and curious fact in the history of South America that, during the entire 18th cen tury, the same causes were producing the same effects among people far separated from each other and of a character entirely distinct, scattered from the banks of the Paraguay River to the Colombian Mountains. Those effects may have been the precursors of that great revolutionary movement that created our great Republic and drove the Bourbons from the throne of France and, later, shook to the centre the monarchical fabric of Spain herself. Excerpt from The Social Evolution of the Argentine Republic Since the constitution of 1853, the social evolution of Argentine has been guided and carried forward by two factors, immigration and foreign capital. Under their influence, the characteristics of the prior period were gradually modified to a certain extent. The administration of Mitre struggled against the difficulties of imade quate means of communication between the distant cities and against traditional custom of guerilla warfare. Force was employed in order to remain master of the field and to break up the resistance which the men of the interior set up against the prominence of those of Buenos Ayres, and a cruel war against Paraguay was undertaken. The ability and consistency of this Argentine statesman was great. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Argentina and the Argentines: Notes and Impressions of a Five Years' Sojourn in the Argentine Republic, 1885-90 This volume pretends to be nothing more than its subsidiary title indicates; namely, a series of "Notes" or sketches of Argentina and the Argentines, made during a sojourn of nearly six years in Buenos Ayres. Of the imperfections and shortcomings of the "Notes," no one could be more sensible than the writer of them. Begun hardly in earnest; without connection, continuity, or definite plan; they may be compared rather to instantaneous photographs taken at haphazard, and which depict alike the natural and the ludicrous, than to elaborate and carefully studied pictures. In addition to other inconveniences, the writer had the misfortune to lose, during the troublous times following the Revolution of July, 1890, a large collection of shorthand notes relating chiefly to the events of the years 1886-87 - a loss which it was impossible to repair, and which has compelled him to trust to his memory for some of the particulars related in the book; and although pains have been taken to verify, as far as was possible at this distance of time and place, the particulars referred to, it is not improbable that some inaccuracies of detail may have crept into the descriptions, and equally possible that the "Notes" which have been perforce omitted might have been found more interesting and instructive than those which are now given. Excerpt from Argentina and Her People of to-Day: An Account of the Customs, Characteristics, Amusements, History and Advancement of the Argentinians, and the Development and Resources of Their Country The Spaniards who first visited the coast of Argentina, and sailed up the broad and im posing river that empties into the Atlantic Ocean, were so impressed with the outlook and prospects, that they named the country Argen tina, which means silvery or silver-like, and bestowed upon the majestic stream the name Rio de La Plata, which means river Of silver. When their prospectors failed to find the great deposits of gold and silver, which had been described to them by the natives, this province lost much of its importance, and soon dwindled into comparative insignificance. The city, which was founded near the mouth of that river, continued for more than two centuries a comparatively unimportant place. Excerpt from Argentina From a British Point of View: And Notes on Argentine Life IN May last I was asked to read, towards the end of the year, a paper on Argentina, before the Royal Society of Arts. The task of compiling that paper was one of absorbing interest to me; and though I fully realise how inadequately I have dealt with so interesting a subject, I venture to think that the facts and figures which the paper contains may be Of interest to some, at any rate, of the Shareholders of the Santa Fe Land Company. It is upon this supposition that it is published. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
