Excerpt from Argentina, Past Present Probably the best excuse for a second edition is that the first has been sold out. If so, this may be alleged with justice as an explanation in the present case. Another reason, equally potent, is that the production of this new edition makes possible the inclusion of the coloured illustrations by Mr. Christ mas additions much welcomed by the author, since they cannot fail to serve as an invaluable aid to the text. Excerpt from The Amazing Argentine a New Land of Enterprise IT was on a boat which was laden with bananas and running from Colon, on the Isthmus of Panama, to New York. The steward called me at dawn. He thought I was mad because I stood in pyjamas without apparent heed of the mirky drizzle. Beyond the sad waters there was little to see but a low-lying and dreary island with a melancholy lighthouse. No vegetation brightened the scene. There was no gorgeous sunrise. There was nothing but a. Lump of barrenness heaving out Of the sea. But this was the island of San Salvador, the western land which Columbus first touched when he sailed to find the Indies. Excerpt from The Argentine Republic: Its Development and Progress IN the following chapters I have endeavoured to indi cate the essential aspects of colonization in modern Argentina: the conquest of the soil by man, the exploitation of its natural resources, the development of agriculture and cattle-breeding, and the growth of the population and enlargement of the urban centres. For a new country like Argentina it is not convenient to adopt the strictly regional plan which seems to be the best means of giving a complete and methodical description of the historic countries of western Europe, where it is the only way to keep in close touch with the geographical facts. In western Europe each region is really an independent unity. It has for ages lived upon its own resources; each population-group has its horizon definitely limited and the complex action of the environment upon man, and of man upon the country, has proceeded in each district rather on the lines of an isolated and impassioned dialogue between the two. It is quite different in Argentina. There, many of the facts which we have to record consist in an expansion of the population, a spread of methods of exploitation from zone to zone of the country, and the influence upon colonization of commerce and of the varying needs of the markets of the world. Excerpt from Argentina From a British Point of View: And Notes on Argentine Life IN May last I was asked to read, towards the end of the year, a paper on Argentina, before the Royal Society of Arts. The task of compiling that paper was one of absorbing interest to me; and though I fully realise how inadequately I have dealt with so interesting a subject, I venture to think that the facts and figures which the paper contains may be Of interest to some, at any rate, of the Shareholders of the Santa Fe Land Company. It is upon this supposition that it is published. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Real Argentine: Notes and Impressions of a Year in the Argentine and Uruguay So many books have been written on South Ameri can countries within recent years that the addition of one more to the already formidable list calls for a word of explanation, if not apology. SO far as American writers on the latin-american Republics are concerned, many of their works are based upon the statistical returns of the respective Govern ments, or on topographical and historical data, easily obtainable at the public libraries. Others, more pop ular, but perhaps less valuable, are the hasty records of fleeting visits. These latter are so apt to be in formed by a spirit of indiscriminate admiration that they present misleading and untrue notions of the coun tries described.
