While offering our opinions and philosophies as a defense against anyone trying to convince us there is a God, our attitudes and actions betray us into admitting that He exists, that He is out to get us, and that we need Him to get us. How do I know this? Well, some of it I learned from Calvin and Hobbes. So please, step inside, sit down, and let's learn from them. In this little book, the readers are challenged to reconsider their views on what someone has called the four most important questions: origin, meaning, morality, and destiny. When you are done reading this book, you will have to decide whether the author is just one more person adding his book to the countless others that fill bookstores and library shelves. Or this book has introduced you to Him, Who is both the Source and the destination of your life; and your life will never be the same. But how will you know until you pick it up and read? "Most writers who address the atheist or agnostic try to marshal formidable arguments that demonstrate the wrongheadedness of that worldview. Not so this book. You will enjoy the author's conversational style, his use of the insightful messages of Calvin and Hobbes, the fact that this book is not at all pretentious or stuffy, but one that seeks above all to communicate with people where they are. If you want to understand the Christian message without being preached at, this book will provide that understanding--with a touch of humor. And if readers let down their guard long enough to hear, truly hear, what the author is conveying, they will be richly rewarded." --Dr. Joel Heck, professor, Concordia University, Texas

Natural Signs And Knowledge Of God written by C. Stephen Evans and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-27 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Is there such a thing as natural knowledge of God? C. Stephen Evans presents the case for understanding theistic arguments as expressions of natural signs in order to gain a new perspective both on their strengths and weaknesses. Three classical, much-discussed theistic arguments - cosmological, teleological, and moral - are examined for the natural signs they embody. At the heart of this book lie several relatively simple ideas. One is that if there is a God of the kind accepted by Christians, Jews, and Muslims, then it is likely that a 'natural' knowledge of God is possible. Another is that this knowledge will have two characteristics: it will be both widely available to humans and yet easy to resist. If these principles are right, a new perspective on many of the classical arguments for God's existence becomes possible. We understand why these arguments have for many people a continued appeal but also why they do not constitute conclusive 'proofs' that settle the debate once and for all. Touching on the interplay between these ideas and contemporary scientific theories about the origins of religious belief, particularly the role of natural selection in predisposing humans to form beliefs in God or gods, Evans concludes that these scientific accounts of religious belief are fully consistent, even supportive, of the truth of religious convictions.

Philosophy Of Religion written by Tim Bayne and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with PHILOSOPHY categories.

What is the philosophy of religion? How can we distinguish it from theology on the one hand and the psychology/sociology of religious belief on the other? What does it mean to describe God as eternal? And should religious people want there to be good arguments for the existence of God, or is religious belief only authentic in the absence of these good arguments? In this Very Short Introduction Tim Bayne introduces the field of philosophy of religion, and engages with some of the most burning questions that philosophers discuss. Considering how religion should be defined, and whether we even need to be able to define it in order to engage in the philosophy of religion, he goes on to discuss whether the existence of God matters. Exploring the problem of evil, Bayne also debates the connection between faith and reason, and the related question of what role reason should play in religious contexts. Shedding light on the relationship between science and religion, Bayne finishes by considering the topics of reincarnation and the afterlife. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Is There A God written by Graham Oppy and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-12 with Philosophy categories.

Bertrand Russell famously quipped that he didn’t believe in God for the same reason that he didn’t believe in a teapot in orbit between the earth and Mars: it is a bizarre assertion for which no evidence can be provided. Is belief in God really like belief in Russell’s teapot? Kenneth L. Pearce argues that God is no teapot. God is a real answer to the deepest question of all: why is there something rather than nothing? Graham Oppy argues that we should believe that there are none but natural causal entities with none but natural causal properties—and hence should believe that there are no gods. Beginning from this basic disagreement, the authors proceed to discuss and debate a wide range of philosophical questions, including questions about explanation, necessity, rationality, religious experience, mathematical objects, the foundations of ethics, and the methodology of philosophy. Each author first presents his own side, and then they interact through two rounds of objections and replies. Pedagogical features include standard form arguments, section summaries, bolded key terms and principles, a glossary, and annotated reading lists. In the volume foreword, Helen De Cruz calls the debate "both edifying and a joy," and sums up what’s at stake: "Here you have two carefully formulated positive proposals for worldviews that explain all that is: classical theism, or naturalistic atheism. You can follow along with the authors and deliberate: which one do you find more plausible?" Though written with beginning students in mind, this debate will be of interest to philosophers at all levels and to anyone who values careful, rational thought about the nature of reality and our place in it.

Reasonable Faith written by William Lane Craig and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Religion categories.

Perfect as a textbook yet excellent for lay readers, this updated edition builds a positive case for Christianity by applying the latest thought to core theological themes. J. Gresham Machen once said, "False ideas are the greatest obstacles to the reception of the gospel"-which makes apologetics that much more important. Wanting to engage not just academics and pastors but Christian laypeople and seekers, William Lane Craig has revised and updated key sections in this third edition of his classic text to reflect the latest work in astrophysics, philosophy, probability calculus, the arguments for the existence of God, and Reformed epistemology. His approach-that of positive apologetics-gives careful attention to crucial questions and concerns, including: the relationship of faith and reason, the existence of God, the problems of historical knowledge and miracles, the personal claims of Christ, and the historicity of the resurrection of Jesus. He shows that there is good reason to think Christianity is true. As Craig says, "If you have a sound and persuasive case for Christianity, you don't have to become an expert in comparative religions and Christian cults. A positive justification of the Christian faith automatically overwhelms all competing world views lacking an equally strong case."

The Best Argument For God written by Patrick Flynn and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-16 with Religion categories.

When the medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas addressed the best arguments against God in his masterwork, the Summa Theologica, he listed only two. The first was the problem of evil: How can God -- who is perfectly good -- exist alongside that which is against Him? His second: Is God really needed to explain the world? In this landmark work, Patrick Flynn presents the best arguments for God while also addressing the strongest objections. This book is destined to become the apologetic gold standard for defending classical theism against atheistic naturalism. Flynn clearly identifies what is at stake and then provides you with cogent, accessible, yet potent defenses to counter those arguments that atheists routinely make to justify their claim that there is no God. Flynn masterfully defines commonly misconstrued terms -- from worldview and intelligibility to scientism, ontology, and metaphysical intuition -- and illustrates them with real-world examples. He explains the Principle of Sufficient Reason and how it is used to support the reality of God. You also will acquire the foundation you need to understand the best philosophical arguments God's existence. Drawing from insights from philosophers Aristotle and Aquinas to Leibniz and Lonergan, you will find extensive philosophical reasons to accept and explain: Two step-by-step cosmological arguments How phenomena -- like consciousness and moral intuition -- confirm God's existence The fine-tuning of creation (and why God -- and not the multiverse -- is the best explanation of that) Why the assertion that everything can be explained by science is unreasonable Whether God can be falsified ... and if that even matters! Whether belief in a necessary being is embracing a "god of the gaps" With sidebar definitions and detailed explanations, Flynn guides you in learning authentic reasons for your belief in God. He evaluates whether it's simpler to believe in God or not, and he provides numerous arguments from philosophy, science, and plain common sense. Additionally, you will discover how even the traditionally held attributes of God point to His existence. This seminal book turns the tables on and pokes holes in the theory of naturalism. Flynn's in-depth analysis will give you the tools you need to share your belief in such a way that those who deny God's existence will have to defend their view. Also featured is an appendix with a dozen additional objections and bulletproof replies for the existence of God.

What if the core arguments for atheism reveal that God actually exists? With a rising dependence on science and rational thought in today’s culture, religion is often dismissed as “outdated” or “illogical” and atheism is gaining a wider audience. But award-winning author Dr. Frank Turek provides a strong case for how atheists steal logic, reasoning, evidence and science from God in order to support their claims. A result of careful study, Stealing from God exposes the intellectual crimes atheists are committing by taking a closer look at: Causality—how did the universe originate? Reason—what does atheism mean for truth? Information & Intentionality—God’s signature in creation Morality—objective morality without God Evil—is evil a contradiction for atheism? Science—how theism makes science possible And a powerful 4-point case for Christianity No matter your stance on religion or atheism, this book will prove a thought-provoking and compelling read. With clear, well-researched arguments, Stealing from God is a refreshing resource to bolster your faith, help you engage with those who disagree, and open your eyes to the truth of religion and atheism. “An unassailable case for the truth of Christianity.” —Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author “Provides powerful and clear answers to questions of enduring importance for every thinking person.” —Dr. John Lennox, professor of mathematics at Oxford University “Will change the way you think about the world and equip you to defend what you believe.” —J. Warner Wallace, author of Cold-Case Christianity

The recent runaway bestsellers God Is Not Great and The God Delusion have left Christians feeling defensive but not necessarily equipped to refute the accusations of nonbelievers. The bestsellers have also provoked those who are the fence about whether God exists, and if so, whether He's good. In his trademark elegant prose, Father Williams provides accessible but intellectually rich answers for both groups. Questions include "Isn't religion just another name for superstition (or magic or myth)?" "If God is all-good and all-powerful, how can evil exist in the world?" and "Hasn't science disproved God's existence?" For believers and those searching for something to believe in, Father Williams offers an easy-to-use resource for building up one's own faith and igniting others'.
