St. Anselm's Proslogion, which he wrote in 1078, has over the last nine centuries attracted both controversy and philosophical debate. Anselm's approach to seeking the truth of God's existence is with faith and reason inextricably linked, first meditating then contemplating what reason informs and faith reveals of the Highest Good. Anselm was convinced as he tells us in the Preface to the Proslogion that, following his previous work, the Monologion, a single argument, would suffice to demonstrate that God truly existed. The Argument's a priori starting point has been and still remains today causal to differing thoughts by many commentators. Much debate has been centred on chapters II-IV of the Proslogion, which concerns exclusively God's existence and Anselm's celebrated concept "that than which a greater cannot be conceived." It is the case, however, that the Proslogion's remaining chapters V-XXVI concerning God's nature reveal not only the anguish of Anselm's spiritual journey even though he claimed in chapter IV that he had been graced by God's illumination, but also the ultimate joy that enveloped him in the truth that cannot be denied and the hope and promise of eternal salvation.

In this book, Richard Campbell reformulates Anselm’s proof to show that factual evidence confirmed by modern cosmology validly implies that God exists. Anselm’s proof, which was never the “ontological argument” attributed to him, emerges as engaging with current philosophical issues concerning existence and scientific explanation.

St Anselm (1033-1109) was an Italian theologian and philosopher and the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1093-1097. He is best known for his work, Proslogion, in which he defends the Church and sets out his philosophy and argument for the existence of God, now known as the Ontological Argument. OA is now a commonly studied subject at schools and universities, yet this critical, original treatise outlining the OA is often misunderstood by readers. Here in the Briefly text, the author guides the reader through Anselm's argument concerning existence and whether it is an attribute of God in the same way omnipotence, omniscience and benevolence are believed to be. As such the argument is an a priori argument. It does not rest on proving God's existence from the empirical realm but on showing that God must exist logically (or that God's non-existence is illogical). The main idea behind Anselm's argument is that epistemology (what we know) IS ontology (what there is); or, that if it is possible to conceive of X, then X must surely exist.

The Many-Faced Argument presents a compilation of essays on the ontogical argument for the existence of God, covering responses to Anselm's position in the first half, and, in the second half, covering developments of the argument in the context of modern philosophy. Along with contibutions by editors Hick and McGill, other writers include Karl Barth, Andre Hayden, Anselm Stolz, Bertrand Russell, Jerome Shaffer, Gilbert Ryle, Aime Forest, Norman Malcolm, and Charles Hartshorne. While interest in the the ontological argument has arisen from various disciplines -- historical, theological and philosophical -- the purpose of this book is to bring these varied writings together so that scholars and students within each discipline may have contributions from other fields readily available.

This book re-examines Anselm’s famous arguments for the existence of God. It demonstrates how he validly deduces from plausible premises that God exists most truly of all. The standard criticisms are shown to be based on misreading the text.
