Don’t draw your dirk in old Argyll - The Fiscal’s watching! Twelve previously untold stories of violent crime, riot, theft, psychopathy and fraud. Argyll in the early 18th century was a place of improving industry, stabilising economy and hard working farmers, fishermen and town dwellers. But behind the respectable facade of the county towns, and hidden among the damp green hills, crime was rife. Now Prisoner Within exposes the criminal activities that were taking place from Campbeltown to Keil, Tobermory to Dalmally, and beyond. Supported by original documentary research and on-site work among the hills, fields and ruined cottages, each chapter describes the background to the crime, the social patterns of life in the district and the county towns, and the legal system which invariably brought the criminals to book. The myriad of witness statements are untangled, lost locations found, old escape routes traced and motives behind the actions of some of the criminals are studied. One crime is possibly solved over 300 years after it occurred, and the anomaly in the midst of another is explained. In other chapters islanders rebel against mainland rule, inebriated gentry brawl, a son kills his father, and town burgesses show their true colours. These stories of the law enforcers and law breakers whose lives crossed in the courtrooms of old Argyll have largely disappeared into history, but the crimes detailed in Now Prisoner Within, bring perpetrators, prosecutors, victims and communities back into focus, describing true tales of axe and alcohol, pistol and poison - and one particular criminal who managed to skip the embrace of the gallows rope.

Many hermitages and eremitic communities are recorded throughout the medieval period, yet to date, there has been no comprehensive archaeological study. This richly illustrated book will consequently discuss a range of hermitages and introduce the reader to their architectural forms, spaces, location and environments as well as the religious practices associated with them. It will focus primarily on the British material but will nonetheless consider this within a wider comparative framework. Overall, it will offer an archaeological history of hermitages and presents a unique window into a lost world of medieval spirituality and religious life. Key related themes will include the earliest archaeological evidence for hermits (eremitic life) in India, China and East Asia, pre- and early Christian desert hermitages, cave hermitages, eremitic communities, saints and missionary hermits, life and diet, medieval mysticism and the contemplative tradition, secular and ornamental hermitages and hermits in post-medieval and contemporary society. This book offers an illustrated archaeological history of hermitages and eremitic communities, with reference to key examples and case studies. It will therefore appeal to both academics, students and a more general readership interested in archaeology, history, comparative religion, architecture, religion and belief, spirituality, medieval Britain, modern contemplative practice and contemporary heritage issues.

This volume, originally published in 1989, is intended as a practical guide to archaeological illustration, from drawing finds in the field to technical studio drawing for publication. It is also an invaluable reference tool for the interpretation of illustrations and their status as archaeological evidence. The book's ten chapters start from first principles and guide the illustrator through the historical development of archaeological illustration and basic skills. Each chapter then deals with a different illustrative technique - drawing in the field during survey work and excavation, drawing artefacts, buildings and reconstructions, producing artwork for publication and the early uses of computer graphics. Information about appropriate equipment, as well as a guide to manufacturers, is also supplied. An obvious and important feature of Archaeological Illustration is the 120 line drawings and half-tones which show the right - and the wrong - way of producing drawings. This volume will therefore be of interest to amateur and professional archaeologists alike.
