Excerpt from Aristos ("the Best") Shorthand Nevertheless, the Author, after several years' experience of this method, is convinced that thick and thin phonetic pairing is a structural mistake, while it hampers the hand and is an obstacle to legibility. It is a structural mistake, because a Sign which is proper to the importance of one consonant may not be at all pro portioned to the importance of the consonant with which it is paired. The two are unequally yoked. He has therefore composed, on Taylorian lines, a system in which all his long and varied experience has had part, either as to what is given or as to what is omitted. Phonetic theories are discarded, and the only considerations entertained are, legibility and facility of writing. III the belief of the Author, Aristos Shorthandwill be more easily learnt, written and read than any other system now before the public. He has always written a system himself before asking others to adopt it, and he gives the same proof of good faith now. Iliatever judgment be passed upon his final stenographic work, he thinks he may claim that this is the only shorthand system which has been produced after more than forty years spent in the practice ofthe art. 'REVELATORY' - DAILY TELEGRAPH ***** 'FASCINATING' - OBSERVER 'ENGROSSING' - DAILY MAIL 'You'll worry at your hunger to keep on reading, but you won't be able to stop' - GUARDIAN, Book of the Year David Litvinoff was one of the great mythic characters of '60s London. Flitting between the worlds of music, art and crime, he exerted a hidden influence that helped create the Krays twins' legend, connected the Rolling Stones with London's dark side, shaped the plot of classic film Performance - and saw him immortalised in a portrait by Lucian Freud. Litvinoff's determination to live without trace means that his life has always eluded biographers, until now. Intent on unravelling the enigma of Litvinoff, Keiron Pim conducted 100 interviews over five years, speaking to Eric Clapton and Marianne Faithfull, James Fox and 'Mad' Frankie Fraser. The result is an extraordinary feat of research that traces a rogue's progress amongst aristocrats, gangsters and rock stars.

Mimesis In Contemporary Theory The Literary And The Philosophical Debate written by Mihai Spariosu and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1984-01-01 with Philosophy categories.

After almost two hundred years of relative obscurity mimesis finds itself again in the limelight of Western theoretical discourse. In the Anglo-American tradition, mimesis or 'imitation' regained some prominence, at the turn of the century, through S.H. Butcher's translation of and introduction to Aristotle's Poetics, and , in the thirties, through the work of the Chicago school, also centered around Aristotle. More recently, mimesis looms large in the work of Auerbach, Burke and Frye. But it is only in the past decade or so, with the publication in France of the work of Barthes, Derrida, Girard, Genette, and some of their collaborators, that mimesis has again become an object of heated controversy on both sides of the Atlantic. The present collection is designed not only to bring fresh points of view to the current debate, by drawing in other theoretical developments beside the Anglo-American and the French, but also to explain why mimesis has so stubbornly haunted our civilization.

From its ancient incarnation as a song to recent translations in modern languages, Homeric epic remains an abiding source of inspiration for both scholars and artists that transcends temporal and linguistic boundaries. The Cambridge Guide to Homer examines the influence and meaning of Homeric poetry from its earliest form as ancient Greek song to its current status in world literature, presenting the information in a synthetic manner that allows the reader to gain an understanding of the different strands of Homeric studies. The volume is structured around three main themes: Homeric Song and Text; the Homeric World, and Homer in the World. Each section starts with a series of 'macropedia' essays arranged thematically that are accompanied by shorter complementary 'micropedia' articles. The Cambridge Guide to Homer thus traces the many routes taken by Homeric epic in the ancient world and its continuing relevance in different periods and cultures.
