Excerpt: ...doch mir, Gleiches mit Gleichem vergelten, ebenso, wie wenn er bei Bekampfung des zweiten Einwurfes hatte antworten wollen, dass ja manche philosophische (Schriften weit eher geeignet seien, unreine Begierden zu erregen, als irgend ein Werk eines Dichters. In gleicher Weise wird der zweite Gegengrund behandelt, welcher darin besteht, dass Plato keinen Grund habe, die Poesie aus einem Staate zu verbannen, in dem er selbst durch seine Einrichtungen grossere Sittenlosigkeit hervorrufen wurde, als man jemals der Dichtkunst zuschreiben konne. Der dritte und Hauptgrund aber ist der, dass Plato's Verbot nicht gegen die Dichtkunst als solche gerichtet sei, sondern gegen den Missbrauch, der mit ihr getrieben werden konne, gleichwie auch der heilige Paulus vor dem Missbrauch der Philosophie gewarnt habe, und nicht vor dieser selbst. Dieses Verbot des grossen Philosophen sei aber hervorgerufen worden durch die falschen Lehren von den Gottern, die die Dichter verbreitet hatten, und durch welche die Jugend verdorben worden ware. Nun sei aber dieser Vorwurf ungerecht; denn di Dichter hatten nur die allgemein angenommenen Lehren uber die Gotter verbreitet und so jedenfalls weniger Schaden gestiftet, als die Philosophen durch Verbreitung ihrer atheistischen Lehren. Da aber ausserdem dieser Tadel gegen die Dichter auf unsere Verhaltnisse und unsere gelauterten Anschauungen nicht mehr passe, so werde jener Einwurf fur uns vollstandig hinfallig, um so mehr, da Plato selbst in seinen Dialogen der Dichtkunst hohen Preis zu Theil werden lasse.
