If it is right to "look to the end," if we should then call a man happy, not because he is happy then, but because he was so before, it is strange if we are not to ba allowed to tell the truth about him at the time when he is so. This is because we do not wish to call the living happy in view of possible vicissitudes, and because we conceive of happiness as something permanent, something not subject to vicissitudes, and because the same person may have many turns of fortune's wheel. Clearly, if we follow these changes of fortune we shall often have to call the same person happy and again miserable, thus making the happy man a sort of chameleon and resting his happiness on shaky foundations. Does not all this point to the conclusion that it is quite wrong to follow the vicissitudes of fortune1? It is not on these that the goodness or badness of a life depends. It is true, as we have said, that human life stands in need of such things; but the decisive elements in happiness are the activities according to goodness, and of unhappiness activities of the opposite kind. The difficulty we have just discussed is evidence of our statement . There is no human function that has so great an element of solidity as activities according to goodness; they are more permanent even than the sciences. Further, it is just the most precious of them that are the most permanent; for it is in these that the happy man chiefly spends his life and most continuously. That is apparently the cause of their not being liable to be lost through forgetfulness. We shall, then, find what we are looking for in the happy man, and he will have this character all...

Excerpt from Aristotle on Education: Being Extracts From the Ethics and Politics Being an activity, all science has an ma'. T a conception which we are apt to misunderstand. Which we translate by end had a far more definite not only in Aristotle's technical language, but in the everyday life. It meant completion, and the Gr which we translate by complete or perfect is s adjective derived from this noun. Now, Aristotle foremost a biologist, and this conception, like oth took a biological form in his mind. All - and activity is a form of motion - was to him a pro matter to form. The completion or end of the pr the attainment of the form which was natural to the or whatever else it might be that was becoming. Grown oak is the end of the acorn, the flower is t of the seed, the man of the embryo. We have ne right interpretation of any passage where Aristotle speaks abort ends till we have seen in what sense the end in questio the completion of a process. Now, if we apply this to the form of activity which we science, we see at once that the end of some sciences a different character from that of others. In other words sciences are not complete at the same stage of In the case of geometry, the activity is complete w the proposition we are studying there is nothing mo than the activity itself. But, if we take a science like ing, we find that the case is quite different. The construction is certainly an activity of the soul, but it can be called complete; the process is only completed by actual construction of a road or a bridge or some ot product beyond the activity itself. Such sciences are cal practical, while those which find their completion in the sim activity of knowing are called speculative and t/zcorctical. Despite recent developments in the history of emotions and in comparative studies, sustained cross-cultural comparative studies of the emotions remain few and far between. Jingyi Jenny Zhao has produced the first major work that takes two philosophers from the ancient Greek and early Chinese traditions to stimulate discussion of an interdisciplinary nature on the rich and complex topic of the emotions-in particular, of shame. It features comparative analysis of Greek and Chinese texts while bringing the ancient materials to bear on modern controversies such as the role of shame in moral education and social cohesion. Although unalike in their social-historical and intellectual backgrounds, Aristotle and Xunzi bear striking similarities in several respects: they both conceptualize humans as essentially members of communities, as having a unique set of characteristics that set them apart from other living things, and as beings in need of moral training to fulfil their potential and become integrated into a well-ordered society. The two philosophers' discourses on shame reveal important insights into their ideals of human nature, moral education and the good life. This book tackles directly the methodological problems that are relevant to anyone interested in cross-cultural comparisons and organizes discussions of the ancient sources to facilitate a thorough integration of perspectives from the cultural traditions concerned. This approach provides sufficient focus to allow for detailed textual analysis while giving scope for making constant connections to the broader comparative questions at issue.
